This month’s interview

Nambeye interviews Lee-Anne Singh, of Image Promotions

The recent publication of the exciting “Best of Zambia” book, a coffee table book that showcases Zambia, prompted our Multi-Media Journalist, Nambeye Katebe to catch up with Lee-Anne Singh from Image Promotions, the company that is the driving force in Zambia behind the book.

NAMBEYE: To start with, besides being the founder of Image Promotions, you have had a direct hand in running an impressive list of businesses including Rooney’s Hire and ShowMasters. Could you give us a brief history of your experiences with these companies?

LEE-ANNE: I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to be involved in founding several companies. This includes Rooney’s Hire, ShowMasters, Conference Systems, Magic of Zambia and Image Promotions. These five companies are a group of companies

under the registered name of Event Solutions. Event Solutions basically provides turn-key solutions for event management.

NAMBEYE: You are quite the business woman! You have mentioned five companies that fall under the umbrella of Event Solutions. How distinct is one company from the other?

LEE-ANNE: Event Solutions mainly provides solutions for any event. Each company is unique and four of the companies deal with different areas of event management.

Image Promotions are conference and event management professionals, supporting the organisation of any kind of function.

Rooney’s hire out quality equipment for indoor and outdoor events such as corporate cocktail parties, international conferences and weddings.

ShowMasters provide a complete exhibition stand design-and-build service. Conference Systems deals with audio and visual systems and all IT related details for conferences. The Magic of Zambia is relatively new and is a publication company.

NAMBEYE: With all these different businesses as part of your portfolio, what would you say is closest to your heart?

LEE-ANNE: Education. I have a passion for education and to help young people. I am a board member of Junior Achievement which is a global organisation that has been in existence since 1919 and started operating in Zambia in 2009.

NAMBEYE: That is interesting considering that most of the work you are involved in focuses on event management. Have you had an opportunity to live out your passion and help young people in terms of education?

Lee-Anne: Yes. As part of the board for Junior Achievement I have been involved in organising careers fairs.

We will be holding the fourth careers fair this year at the Mulungushi Conference Centre and over 300 students have already signed up.

Page 5: The Best of Zambia magazine (April 2012)

NAMBEYE: Exciting news! Something else that is exciting is the recent publication of a coffee table book called the Best of Zambia. Image Promotions partnered with GVPedia to get this wonderful book together. Could you tell us how you got involved in the production of the book?

LEE-ANNE: To be honest we were head-hunted! GVPedia approached us and we were happy to take up the challenge. A lot of people contributed to making the Best of Zambia book come alive and we just managed the project and put it all together.

NAMBEYE: Image Promotions is mostly known for event management, but you choose to get involved in the production of the “Best of Zambia” book. What experience do you have in book production?

LEE-ANNE: This is actually not the first book we have done under Image Promotions. We have already produced two editions of a book called Magic of Zambia. We were inspired to do it during the Insaka as we realised a lot of people would be coming to Zambia and did not know much about it.

We have now expanded and created Magic of Zambia and this company will handle all future publications.

NAMBEYE: Now something that has caused a lot of confusion has been the title of your book. Many people assume that “Best of Zambia Book” is the same as our online directory “The Best of Zambia”. Could you kindly explain the difference?

LEE-ANNE: Yes, that was something I had to explain a lot during the

production for the book! The most important difference is that “Best Of” is an international brand under GVPedia and is a series of books showcasing and promoting leading companies and entrepreneurs from around the world. 40 countries are already in print and 70 more are in production.

Examples are Best of Botswana, Best of South Africa and so on, so naturally it had to be Best of Zambia.

On the other hand The Best of Zambia website is a comprehensive business profiling website that advertises any enterprise in Zambia to a growing international and local audience.

NAMBEYE: Thanks for clearing that up. We are excited to see Best of Zambia book finally in print! How are you planning to get it out there?

LEE-ANNE: The quality of the book means it can reach to the highest level.

There is a demand for the book to be in all foreign missions so we are doing pretty well already. We have a plan to distribute it to corporate and leading hotels and are proactively marketing it ourselves.

NAMBEYE: The Best of Zambia Book is only the first volume of a series on Zambia, when do we expect the next edition?

LEE-ANNE: We are already working on it and are hoping to get it out within a year.

NAMBEYE: How can businesses get involved in the next edition?LEE-ANNE: Anybody interested

in participating in the next edition should get in touch with us through Image Promotions.

NAMBEYE: Your close partners GVPedia, who are behind the Best of Zambia Book, have linked with the World Trade Centre in Cape Town South Africa to participate in this year’s 2012 EMEA World Trade Centre event. Could you tell us what this event is all about?

LEE-ANNE: The EMEA is a very prestigious event and the exciting news is it will be hosted in Cape Town, South Africa this year. The event is all about networking.

The World Trade Centres in Africa promote trade between private sector entities across Africa so it’s a good way of crossing borders.

NAMBEYE: Will Image Promotions be part of this event?

LEE-ANNE: Definitely. This is an important event and we feel it is definitely something in which we should participate. For us it is an investment into the future which can bring greater opportunities for Zambia.

NAMBEYE: Finally, and probably the most important question, where can people get their copy of the Best of Zambia Book?

LEE-ANNE: Currently, Best of Zambia Book is only available for purchase at the Image Promotions offices. The book costs K250, 000.

— Staff news and opinions

The Best of Zambia team is growing and we don’t mean in terms of staff! We have been blessed with two tiny little new members.

Mrs Sally Chikweto, one of our newest additions to the sales team, had a bouncy baby boy last year and our administration officer Mrs Percy Lungu evened the scales with a pretty little baby girl this year! We thought it would be fun and heart warming to introduce you to our adorable new additions.

Choolwe David Shamaila ChikwetoWith four names to his credit, we can tell that baby Choolwe’s parents were excited about this one! Born on October 16th 2011, Choolwe already impresses his parents with his ability to imitate sounds. The name Choolwe means “lucky” and we reckon we have a little genius on our hands!

It’s the exciting and heart warming pitter patter of tiny feet!

Thandiwe LunguWe could hardly get this little princess to wake up from her beauty sleep for the photo shoot! Born on February the 14th, this Valentine’s Day baby is easy to love. She hardly ever cries and is already a firm favourite, with her ability to break out into little chuckles. Thandiwe means “beloved” and we have to say she is very appropriately named!

The main lodge area is being updated to create an area for guests to relax in between activities. All guest chalets are being upgraded and Finfoot Villa has been given new lighting and a renovated deck, plus the front window levels are being dropped so guests can watch the river from the comfort of their beds. New environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing low energy pathway lighting has also been installed.

The Kafue River is truly spectacular. To appreciate this pristine river, Kaingu Safari Lodge has also invested in new, quieter and environmentally friendly 4-stroke motors on boats that are customised for fishing, birding and simply cruising the river.

John Matthews is thought to be the father of soda water in America. In New York city in 1832, he combined marble dust with sulphuric acid and created carbonated water. Marble chips left over from the building of St. Patrick’s Cathedral were used to produce an estimated 25 million gallons, that is 94, 625,000 litres of soda water. The world of beverages would never be the same.

It is very interesting that no matter where in the world you go, no matter what language you speak, there is one phrase everyone understands – Coca Cola. In today’s society a fizzy soft drink has become the beverage of choice. Many have several bottles per week, if not per day. But do we really know what is going into our bodies? What is happening every time you take a sip of Cola?

The name Coca Cola is from the late 1800’s when it contained varying amounts of cocaine. This was only removed from the formula in 1929. But something equally addictive and stimulating replaced cocaine.

This was found in the ‘kola’ nut that contains the active chemical caffeine. But other than the caffeine, there is sugar which destroys your immune system, and phosphorus which makes your bones loose density. There’s also colouring and flavouring in this drink that can lead to obesity.

Here is what the Doctors say about it: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently published yet another study showing that caffeine consumption leads to osteoporosis. The study of 96 elderly women showed that caffeine consumption caused measurable loss of bone mass in the spine and throughout the skeleton system.

“Excessive consumption of soft drinks which are high in phosphorus can deplete you of calcium and increase your chances of osteoporosis” says Dr.

Health corner: Is it all in the bubbles?Earl Mindell, author of Unsafe At Any Meal. James A Howenstine’s “A Physician’s Guide to Natural Health Products That Work” says “In an interesting experiment the sugar from one soft drink was able to damage the white blood cells’ ability to ingest and kill gonococcal bacteria for seven hours.” ….”Soft drinks also contain large quantities of phosphorus, which when excreted pulls calcium out of the bones. Heavy users of soft drinks are more likely to get osteoporosis along with their damaged arteries.” …”I was amazed to learn,” he testified, “that the beverage contained substantial amounts of phosphoric acid. . . . At the Naval Medical Research Institute, we put human teeth in a Cola beverage and found they softened and started to dissolve within a short period…The acidity of Cola beverages is about the same as vinegar. The sugar content masks the acidity, and children little realise they are drinking this strange mixture of phosphoric acid, sugar, caffeine, colouring, and flavouring matter.”

So the next time you reach for a bottle of something to drink, choose something natural rather than what’s popular - for your health’s sake.
