This month’s interview

An interview with Ika Hindson, co-owner of Senses@Sensorium

The elegant Senses@Sensorium is one of Lusaka’s top spas, offering an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

When you enter Senses@Sensorium you step into a world of relaxation, rebalancing and restoration of the mind, body and spirit.

In the spirit of all things new for the New Year, we decided Senses@Sensoriom was the perfect candidate to feature in this issue. What better way to start the year than with peace of mind and a beautiful you?

We were able to catch the super busy co-owner Ika Hindson for a moment, and we had a lovely chat about Senses@Sensorium.

NAMBEYE: To start with, your spa has a unique name. What is the concept behind the name Senses@Sensorium?

IKA: As you may know, in the Roman times, a sensorium was referred to

as a place of relaxation and a place to re-energise. We thought it would be a good idea to bring that aspect into the name as we consider Senses@Sensorium a place of total relaxation. We included the idea of senses because here at Senses@Sensorium, we aim to look after all your senses.

NAMBEYE: How did you venture into this particular type of business?

IKA: It may surprise you. I first studied in France and graduated with a French literature degree. However, despite my choice of study I have always been interested in beauty and aesthetics. During my studies I took a course with a friend in dermatology and this fuelled my passion even further. A friend encouraged me to take summer courses to do with dermatology and eventually I went on to study for a degree in dermatology. I have run other businesses related to beauty and marketing before so going into the spa business was a natural step.

NAMBEYE: You sound passionate about what you do, what really inspires you?

IKA: I have a fascination with all the products that are involved in skin care and beauty. I enjoy learning about the constant changes in techniques, products and ingredients. This is what drives my passion.

NAMBEYE: Though your work involves therapy there seems to be an important aspect of beauty, what is your concept of beauty?

IKA: To me there is no true concept of beauty. It is an emotion, it’s not a reality.

Today you may look at yourself in a mirror and feel beautiful and tomorrow you may look into the very same mirror and feel the complete opposite. What I do is the therapy that creates the feeling of beauty.

NAMBEYE: You mentioned earlier that the work that you are involved in is constantly changing. How do you manage to keep up to date with these changes?

IKA: I travel all the time and attend workshops, conferences and conventions that are specific to my field and this keeps me constantly updated. I have also had the privilege of experiencing different cultures. I have lived in the United Kingdom, France, Poland and South Africa and now Zambia. I bring all these experiences with me to Senses@Sensorium, keeping it fresh and diverse.

Page 5: The Best of Zambia magazine (January 2012)

— 5

NAMBEYE: Could you briefly tell us about some of the services you offer at Senses@Sensorium?

IKA: Senses@Sensorium offer a comprehensive range of services but I will try to sum it up in a nutshell.

We are experts in giving specialised facials; we have equipment for slimming treatments and also provide all kinds of beautification services such as manicures and pedicures.

We have extra special treatments such as tattooing for women only, electrolysis and laser hair removal and also laser treatments for broken capillary repair and pigmentation. We specialise in all types of massages.

NAMBEYE: Apart from being the co-owner at Senses@Sensorium, what is your role in the business?

IKA: I am a specialist in laser treatments and specialised facials. I also do consultations before any form of treatment is decided. I carry out most of the therapy that we do.

NAMBEYE: There are several spas in Lusaka, how does Senses@Sensorium distinguish itself from the rest?

IKA: Well firstly Senses@Sensorium is the only spa in Lusaka that offers comprehensive water therapy treatments.

We believe that a spa must have some water therapy treatments in order to be called a spa. We feel we are one of the few places that can

justly be called a spa. Also we have a team of fully qualified staff. I am a qualified derma-somotologist with over 30 years experience, and my partner Rachade Moukheiber is a professional in tattooing and endermologie.

In addition, we are supported by top experts in the field.

For example, every three months we bring in two specialist doctors from South Africa.

One of the doctors is a specialist in administering botox and restylane. The other specialises in carrying out scans involving the skin in order to determine what is going on with it in order to understand the best form of treatment required.

NAMBEYE: To wrap it up, would you say that you have a specific type of clientele?

IKA: Not at all. In principle Senses@Sensorium does not

target a specific kind of clientele. We welcome anyone who wants to look after themselves and their skin — from those looking for beatification of their hands and feet, teens needing facials, early 20 year olds who desire to look better and older people who want to turn back the clock a little.

Love is in the air — don’t forget Valentine’s next month!

The month of love is speedily heading towards us and if you are not already bursting with ideas on how to impress on this year’s Valentine’s Day, then you are already in trouble!

Over time February 14th has become widley celebrated globally — as Valentine’s Day, the most romantic day of the year! The history behind this day of love is not absolutely certain. One of the theories is that the day was named after a priest called Valentine who lived at a time in the Roman period when soldiers in the Roman army were forbidden to marry. Valentine continued to secretly marry soldiers despite the law and was eventually caught and martyred — hence Valentine’s Day is celebrated to remember this true devotion to love.

Selecting the perfect Valentine’s gift is no easy feat and if you have been in a relationship for a while, ideas are pretty hard to come by. You can’t show up with a box of chocolates and flowers every year! The ideal way to create the perfect Valentine’s Day is to start planning early and to have a number of options to explore. Here are some fun and unusual suggestions we recommend for this year’s Valentine’s.

Drive off into the sunset — there is something extremely romantic about driving off into the sunset with no particular destination. This is the stuff that movies are made of.

If your car will not impress your valentine or if you don’t have a car at all, worry not! We recommend the following car rental companies to have you in the car of your dreams for that romantic road trip.

Trek Car Rentals Travel and Tours This is a company committed to maintaining international standards and ensuring all safety standards are met. Trek offers a good range from small economy cars up to large over-landers, all at competitive rates. All Trek vehicles are comprehensively insured. As well as the self drive option, Trek has a chauffeur driven service for those who want to really impress. Trek chauffeurs are well trained and friendly, with impeccable driving records.

Uni Travel Tours and Car Hire Uni Travel offers car rentals in Lusaka with excellent customer service together with a selection of varied cars for hire. Their fleet consists of four-wheel drive 4x4 vehicles, saloon cars and minibuses. Uni Travel offers both self drive and chauffeur driven vehicles

How do you grow a business in Zambia? What services are available to help you? In last month’s Best of Zambia magazine we started to address these questions. We reviewed the eBiz Guide to Zambia (newly published by World Investment News). The article covered how to get started, what institutions can help, recruitment, facilities management and office supplies.

This month we will touch on expanding your business. Most businesses that fail do so because of liquidity issues rather than lack of profitability. Successful growth involves being adequately capitalised and finding a consistently healthy balance between turnover and costs. It is essential to invest time on a three or five year business plan to define focus, scope and a strategic framework.

As you grow, you may want to consider sub-contracting certain aspects of the work so that you are able to concentrate on your core business. Now, let’s get specific, with some examples of how to expand your business both physically and in the market place — through logistical services, and through promotion and brand-building.

LogisticsIf your company is a manufacturing enterprise, if it trades locally in imported goods or if it exports overseas, then, as you expand, a key factor will be sourcing effective and affordable logistical services. This will be one of your major costs and it is worthwhile spending time choosing the right freight and forwarding company. Here are some suggestions.

All-round freight forwardingBridge Cargo in Lusaka provides a professional cost-effective freight forwarding and customs clearing service. It has a computerised tracking system that monitors cargo in transit all over the world. The company works to create long-term business relationships with its customers.

MarketingFor a small business, the whole concept of marketing may seem like murky waters. But marketing essentially brings potential customers to your door. To attract leads you need to ensure they see and hear your compelling message. It is almost impossible to develop your own marketing plan (we speak from experience!) An entrepreneur is necessarily absorbed in his or her own business and cannot easily put themselves in the shoes of their potential customers.

It is very helpful to have an expert in the field of marketing and design to help you develop your marketing plan and promotional tools. This is one area which we strongly recommend you leave to the professionals. It will pay dividends if you do.

Billboard advertising This popular marketing media can work out to be quite expensive, so make sure the investment is worthwhile by choosing a professional sign company.

For billboards and shop signs, Neon and General Signs, with branches in Lusaka and Ndola, is able to supply a full range of quality solutions. It uses digital graphics to create different designs and finishes, and will advise on which type of signs will best suit customers’ needs.

Participation in exhibitions Having a stand at an exhibition is another option. Use it to sell to potential target audiences, build prospect databases and generate sales leads. — Staff news and opinions

And so, 2012 begins! Here are our top three goals for the year:

1. There are a shed load of new features planned for thebestofzambia.com in 2012. In 2011 we relaunched the Best of Zambia website with a completely new look and feel. In summary, the changes made the site much easier to navigate and frankly, much prettier!

After that relaunch, our design team had to move on to other projects. But their attention is returning to thebestofzambia.com. Although we had a very successful launch, and you may be happy with what you’ve got, we know there is lots of unfinished business to attend to!

Now I’m debating with myself. Should I share more exactly what the design team will be up to or shall I keep it surprise. It’s going to be a surprise folks!

2. We’ve got some exciting social media campaigns lined up for 2012. We do what we do so users of the website have access to previously unavailable information. We’re working toward changing how Africa and Zambia is perceived as we showcase

2012 goals for thebestofzambia.com ...

great products and services available right here in Zambia. We strive for quality content and images so that people can make informed decisions about who to buy from.

We’re going to be working hard to reach more people in 2012. Though we probably have one of the biggest databases in the country we still believe we have a lot more people to reach. So our social media channels like Facebook, Twitter and Google+ are going to be areas we really work on in 2012. We’re thinking along the lines of competitions, games, prizes, videos... We hope you’ll get involved as much as possible.

3. The Best of Zambia blog will be relaunching. When the site was updated in 2011, the blog got left behind. This year it’ll be getting a polish. We’ll be handling it in a whole new way and it will form part of our social media strategy discussed above.

We have so much planned! Our biggest challenge is probably the time to invest in all these areas of improvement. But we always find a way to do it. We hope you will get involved. Do put your ideas forward and ask us questions. We’re listening.

Failing sight? Frequent urination? Loss of feeling? Yes? You are not the only one. These are signs of diabetes and there are an estimated 347 million known diabetics worldwide. But what is not known to the general public is what happens inside to cause this. Riverview Wellness Centre has successfully treated many diabetics. Here is their take on this sugary problem. But is it a sugary problem?

Known throughout Zambia as ‘sugar disease’ many people have the misconception that by taking in too much sweet things they become diabetic.

The studies however prove otherwise. A study done by Dr Jones from Anderson University USA, put healthy slim young students on a 65% high fat diet and within 2 weeks they were found with mild diabetes. Another group was put on a 5% low fat diet with about 500 grams of sugar per day but they could not produce one mild diabetic.

Science now shows us that it is not so much sugar, but a high fat diet that brings on this problem. “In observational epidemiological studies, a high saturated fat intake has been associated with a higher risk of impaired glucose tolerance…. Considered in aggregate these findings are deemed to indicate a probable causal link between saturated fatty acids and type 2 diabetes, and a possible causal association between total fat intake and type 2 diabetes” (Diet, Nutrition, and the Prevention of Chronic Disease, WHO, 2003 p 74-75)

Translating these research findings into simple words we would say that a high amount of fat in the diet, especially saturated fats from animal sources, will block the insulin receptors at the cell wall.

Sugar disease — food for thought

The good news is that by some simple lifestyle changes, the global diabetes epidemic might never be part of your story. Many diabetics have been treated with great success at Riverview Wellness Centre. It can be done for you. For more information contact the team. Do not become one of the statistics.
