thebestofzambia.com expands its services

It’s no secret that the team at the Best of Zambia are exceptionally passionate about providing high quality communication about Zambia on the web. One of the things we pride ourselves on is that we listen. In fact the entire Best of Zambia development has been heavily influenced by feedback from our clients. They have been saying they want to be promoted more regularly throughout the year. We have responded with this on-line magazine distributed through our web based channels.

thebestofzambia.com has been working longest with clients in the travel sector. For a while various accommodation providers have been asking for an affordable website package that could work with thebestofzambia.com accommodation pages whilst allowing more flexibility. We’re proud to say we’re delivering on that too.

Introducing thebestofzambia.com magazineThe idea for an on-line magazine came as a result of a good problem we had - our client base is growing. We have been racking our brains about how we can effectively promote our clients. Up until now we have done it through the blog and newsletter but too inconsistently for our liking. There is always room for improvement and we’ll be the first to admit that. As we have experience working in the field of magazine production and we needed a container to house a growing amount of (mostly) time sensitive content we felt a magazine was a fantastic solution. We hope you agree. It is accessible to anyone who wants to know the latest news, offers and events in Zambia. Because it is full of locally relevant content we know it will be especially popular with our Zambian website users.

How you can use this on-line magazine to your benefitThe on-line magazine is free as part of thebestofzambia.com gold membership service. All the content in this first magazine has been submitted to us by our clients. If you are a gold member of the Best of Zambia, we will publish whatever news, offers and events you give us in our on-line magazine (subject to our terms and conditions see page 3) and distribute it through our regularly updated web based channels: » 7,000+ e-newsletter subscribers » Nearly 500 fans on our recently launched Facebook page » 2,000+ followers on Twitter » The Best of Zambia blog attached to the website

This magazine has been created for and with Best of Zambia gold members. Gold member customers can participate in the next issue.

In order to distribute the latest news, offers and events, our gold member clients need to submit their content to us by the 20th of each month. It needs to be accurate and ideally include supporting imagery if pictures on clients Best of Zambia web page(s) are not applicable. We look forward to working with our clients to help promote their services even further. Send your latest news, offers and events to [email protected]

Accommodation websites from just K7,000,000 now available! The accommodation website package now available has been specially designed for Zambian accommodation providers by thebestofzambia.com design team. Southern Sun Ridgeway have a great reputation for supporting cultural interchange. This Lusaka hotel eagerly takes any opportunity to encourage the possibilities of bringing different cultural talents to Zambia. Two recent events are highlighted below. The Philomela Choir The Philomela Choir, a Helsinki-based women’s choir started in 1984 and has 45 members. Philomela aspires to perform choral music as extensively and ambitiously as possible. The choir sings traditional, modern, sacred masses and light music. Their singing styles originating from the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, as well as the works of contemporary composers, many of whom have dedicated works to Philomela.

Philomela have produced numerous radio recordings, and in 1991, received the Amateur Music Award of the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation. In the same year, Philomela was nominated Choir of the Year by the Finnish Women’s Choir Association. Philomela’s conductor, Marjukka Riihimaki is characterised as one of the most prominent choir conductors in Finland, a pioneer of female choirs and an inspiring instructor.

Following a three-day workshop in Lusaka, involving exciting local talent, the Zambian Vocal Collection and

Philomela Choir presented a breathtaking concert at the AISL. Adrian Penny, Southern Sun Ridgeway’s General Manager was thrilled to be able to contribute to a cultural exchange of such exceptionally high standards. “Our collaboration” said Penny, “with artists of such excellence is encouragement and motivation for our team”.

Queens Day of the NetherlandsQueens Day of the Netherlands is traditionally the celebration of the Dutch Queen’s birthday, usually celebrated on the 30th of April. But with the activities around the wedding of Prince William and his bride Catherine, the celebrations of Queens Day were moved to the 28th April.

The event was a veritable feast of ‘orange’, and Southern Sun Ridgeway were honoured to cater for 300

guests. Mouth-watering Dutch specialities were on offer and the friendliness of the staff enhanced the festive atmosphere. This time it was an exchange of culinary delights that energised the kitchen staff at Southern Sun Ridgeway and chef Faith Makosa and her staff delivered delicious Dutch favourites much to the delight of guests.

‘Leve de Koningin’ (Long live the Queen) was heard whilst staff and management alike celebrated the Queen’s birthday with the Duth people.

For Southern Sun Ridgeway the continued support of worthwhile cultural projects and exchanges will always be a priority, to benefit the residents of Lusaka. So make sure you keep an eye out for more events promoted by Southern Sun Ridgeway!

A short history of accommodation provision in LivingstoneLivingstone town in Zambia has a fascinating history. It was the first white settlement in the country (then Northern Rhodesia) and became a gateway to the copper mines further north. The settlers crossed the Zambezi River at its deepest and narrowest, a few kilometres west of the Victoria Falls. This crossing is known as the ‘The Old Drift’.

The Old Drift Settlement was established in 1898. Fron then on numerous colonial developments started. The Livingstone Hotel was the first hotel in town and the first brick building of any considerable size to be built. Built in 1906 it consisted of 10 rooms. Sadly, the hotel closed in the 1930’s and was converted into shops. A second hotel built in the same year survived - North Western Hotel still stands as a national monument.

Hotel accommodation was a preserve of foreign investors for a very long time. Only recently, in about the year 2000, did indigenous Zambians wake up to the

challenge to build affordable quality lodge and guesthouse accommodation in order to cater for a wider spectrum of holiday makers. Examples of such accommodation include:

» Guestmate Inn thebestofzambia.com/guestmate-inn » Chapa Classic Lodge

thebestofzambia.com/chapa-classic » Limbo Guesthouse

thebestofzambia.com/limbo-guest-lodge » Kwesu Guest Village

Today the Livingstone Lodge and Guest House Association (of which the above are members) is working to bring Zambian lodging entrepreneurs together to facilitate quality control in lodge management and also assist in economic development of the Zambian tourism sector. 18 July 2011 marked the second annual Nelson Mandela International Day. On this day, people around the world were reminded of the tremendous efforts of Mr. Mandela, and his contribution to humanity over more than 60 years.

How Mandela Day came aboutIn 2009, reflecting on Nelson Mandela’s achievements and contributions in the face of tremendous difficulties, all 192 member states of the United Nations adopted unanimously a resolution to commemorate the life and accomplishments of Mr. Mandela. Every year since, the declaration (on July 18th, Mandela’s birthday) the day carries with it a message to the world that is simple yet powerful: a call to action for every person to take individual responsibility for transforming the world into a better place, one action and one step at a time. Recognising the power of individuals to be catalysts for change, the objective of Mandela Day is to build a global movement that harnesses the collective unity of communities to empower themselves. Taonga Community School

reconstruction

In Zambia as part of the commemoration of Nelson Mandela Day, a consortium of South African companies, under the aegis of the South

African High Commission and in partnership with the United Nations in Zambia, celebrated the ground-breaking ceremony of the Taonga Community School reconstruction in Lusaka’s Bauleni compound.

The new construction will replace the previous school building which was damaged by fire years ago. In the years since the fire, over 400 students, from grades one through seven, have been receiving their education in a makeshift structure on donated council land. With volunteered professional expertise, guidance, material and financial aid a large group of South African company representatives have taken ownership of this initiative and have already collected over K20 million. The response and enthusiasm for this joint venture project has been overwhelming. The South African High Commission is providing a Hydro-Foam brick making machine for the duration of the building phase to enable the school building committee to manufacture their own bricks with sponsored materials.

The aim is to build seven class rooms, each large enough for 35 learners, modern ablutions, three offices and a large hall which the school can also rent out over weekends to earn funds for the school.

On behalf of South African companies operating in Zambia, Southern Sun Ridgeway General Manager, Adrian Penny said, “We are commemorating the Nelson Mandela International Day. Therefore your help to the community could not have come on a better day when we are celebrating the life ideals of this great global icon.” The reconstruction, expected to be completed by December 2011, will cost over K500 million to complete. The new school will provide a quality learning environment for up to 500 pupils between grades one and seven. This is more than double the current capacity of the school.

Dr. Olusegun Babaniyi, Acting United Nations Resident Coordinator and WHO Representative in Zambia, has commended the magnanimity of the consortium of South African companies, describing their efforts to support the Bauleni community and the Taonga Community School as a clear manifestation of former South African President Nelson Mandela’s spirit of tireless leadership, commitment to change, and recognition of the importance of education. “A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination. But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special,” Mr. Mandela once remarked.

You probably don’t need reminding about the national Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Show, ending on the 1st of August. First held in 1926, this year Zambia celebrates its 85th year of exhibitions with the theme, “Shaping tomorrow’s world.”

This year’s show has attracted 17 foreign countries among them Egypt, India, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, China, Iran, Pakistan, Japan, Tanzania and Angola. Others are Germany, Ghana, Nigeria, Namibia, Indonesia and Malawi.

The show is held annually in Lusaka and is organised by the Agricultural and Commercial Show Society of Zambia. Sectors of the economy that are represented at the show include livestock, agricultural machinery and implements, poultry and its products, horticulture, manufacturing, industrial equipment, motor vehicles, plastics products, trading, financial services, forestry and its products, fishing etc.

The show provides an important platform to showcase Zambia’s products and also gives an opportunity for foreign businesses to promote their products on the Zambian market.

The Agricultural and Commercial Society of Zambia announced a budget of K3.5 billion for this year’s show and a total of K1.9 billion was allocated for the improvement of infrastructure at the Lusaka show grounds where the event will

be held. Five roads have been rehabilitated in preparation for the show and a new gate has been opened along the Great east road. The show is expected to bring a turnover of K5.5 billion.

Show goers will be treated to live music from internationally renowned rhumba artist Ferre Golla and other musicians from Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The music shows have been sponsored by mobile phone service providers MTN and Airtel.

Books and partnerships with a shared focus - encouraging trade and investment into Africa

thebestofzambia.com have been working with Image Promotions Ltd and Global Village Partnerships who are launching the first Best of Zambia book. Global Village (www.GVPedia.com) have recently partnered with the World Trade Center Cape Town as their official media division. The World Trade Center in Cape Town is the driving force behind developing World Trade Centers in other African countries, holding all 15 licenses appointed for the development of World Trade Centers in Africa. This ushers in an exciting time for African growth and investment.

The 2012 EMEA comes to Africa! The World Trade Center EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) regional meeting was held in Belgium in June and the World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) has awarded the hosting of the prestigious 2012 EMEA event for World Trade Centers to the World Trade Center Cape Town. This is a massive event to be held in March/April next year.

World Trade Center Cape Town is the headquarters of the World Trade Centers in Africa after being established by Mochron Investments – who hold all 15 African World Trade Center licenses. The honour bestowed on them to host the EMEA event in 2012 is therefore a great opportunity for furthering African trade status. It will allow the African World Trade Centers the chance to engage directly with more than 100 international World Trade Centers and will ultimately see 1000 or more serious international players attending.

The platform has been created – it’s now time for Africa to launch. As the appointed official media partners of the World Trade Centers in Africa, the reach and distribution of Global Village has reached new heights. Their shared focus on the encouragement of trade and investment into Africa ensures their partnership is a perfect fit.

A range of Pinnacle tents are available for hire in various sizes: » 3x3 meters, » 4x4 meters, » 5x5 meters » 6x6 meters

Described as Pinnacle tents because of the points they have at the top, they are perfect for stands such as food stalls. The smaller 3x3 meter marquee tent

can be used as an entrance to larger marquee. They come with clever block out material so they are really cool inside. Made in Germany they are made of superior quality material compared to standard marquee tents of that size.
