Often, however, such migration gives rise to suspicion and hostility, even in ecclesial communities, prior to any knowledge of the migrants’ lives or their stories of persecution and destitution. THE BULLETIN ST THERESA’S PARISH

MISSION STATEMENT St Theresa’s Catholic Parish is a vibrant, inclusive and welcoming community committed to living and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Under our baptismal mission and inspired by the Spirit we are bread for one another and nourished we reach out to make a difference in the world.

POPE FRANCIS MESSAGE The Church without frontiers, Mother to all, spreads throughout the world a

culture of acceptance and solidarity, in which no one is seen as useless, out

of place or disposable. When living out this motherhood effectively, the

Christian community nourishes, guides and indicates the way, accompanying

all with patience, and drawing close to them through prayer and works of

mercy.

This weekend takes on a particular significance. In fact, in an age of such

vast movements of migration, large numbers of people are leaving their

homelands, with a suitcase full of fears and desires, to undertake a hopeful

and dangerous trip in search of more humane living conditions. Often,

however, such migration gives rise to

suspicion and hostility, even in

ecclesial communities, prior to any

knowledge of the migrants’ lives or

their stories of persecution and

destitution. In such cases, suspicion

and prejudice conflict with the

biblical commandment of welcoming

with respect and solidarity the

stranger in need.

REFUGEE AND MIGRANT FACTS -

(from ACMRO - Australian Catholic

Migrant and Refugee Office )

This 101st World Day of Migrant and Refugees let us be

aware that 51.3 million people are displaced globally;

Three million refugees have been produced by the Syrian

war;

Six and a half million, or one-third, of Syrian people are

displaced;

Half of these refugees are children.

Page 2: THE BULLETIN - St Theresa’s · PDF fileLeslie Boland 30th August 2015, ... In the case of the popular cultures of Catholic peoples, ... 1-5 Mark 7:31-37

It is imperative to evangelise cultures in order to

inculturate the Gospel. In countries of Catholic

tradition, this means encouraging, fostering and

reinforcing a richness which already exists. In

countries of other religious traditions, or

profoundly secularized countries, it will mean

sparking new processes for evangelising culture,

even though these will demand long-term

planning. We must keep in mind, however, that

we are constantly being called to grow. Each

culture and social group needs purification and

growth. In the case of the popular cultures of

Catholic peoples, we can see deficiencies which

need to be healed by the Gospel: machismo,

alcoholism, domestic violence, low Mass

attendance, fatalistic or superstitious notions

which lead to sorcery, and the like. Popular piety

itself can be the starting point for healing and

liberation from these deficiencies.

OLIVER-

Date: 19th September, 9am to 3pm. Cost $20pp.

Tea and coffee supplied, but pack own lunch.

Sign on sheet is available in the foyer of the Parish

Centre.

As the years go by, we can find that one of our

greatest teachers has been life itself. This day retreat

allows an opportunity to reflect upon how our

seeming successes and seeming failures can teach us

to be people of prayerfulness. What might be the

Gospel's invitation to us at the moment to live a little

more freely, joyfully and lightly?

Can a little prayerful wisdom from

the years help us to revisit what

Jesus taught in his preaching and

his parables, so we can hear their

resonance in our daily lives?

All is Grace

All is Grace deals with one of the most

basic of all questions: the nature of time.

In a series of brilliant meditations, Fr.

Boulad discusses scientific problems of

time and relativity, the nature of the

present, eternity, coping with the past,

redeeming time and facing the future - all with an

attractive informality which sometimes disguises just

how deep are the problems with which he is concerned.
