The Buzz @ the Boise (cont’d) As time passed, the city of Oakland began seeing a new demand for meeting the needs of local artists in what has become known as live/work space. On the forefront of this trend, the building became one of the first properties to be redeveloped and has blossomed into a central and well-known live/work community for many years. Serving a glimpse into our region’s rich history, “The Boise” continues to thrive in meeting today’s residential needs of Oakland. Welcome to the Boise. We’re glad you’re here. Built in various stages in the early 20 th century by White Farm Equipment, this building was used primarily as a parts distribution center for various farm machine stores in Northern California. Peterson Properties bought the building in the early 1970’s and leased it to Boise Cascade as a newsprint warehouse serving various Northern California newspapers. The strength of the floorings and proximity to railways made the building an ideal space for storing and moving huge newspaper rolls. Welcome to the Boise. We’re glad you’re here.

SPRING 2013 THE BUZZ @ THE BOISE

Artists’ Spotlight We’re proud to spotlight the talent & achievements of a few of the Boise’s

resident artists:

Erica Kremenak Graphic Artist & Fine Artist, Erica has the distinction of being awarded artist residencies in Iceland since 2011, as well as serving as on-site building manager at the Boise for over 2 years. She will be participating in East Bay Open Studios this year, which means that her studio will be open to the public on Saturday, June 1 and Saturday June 8 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and that all her neighbors are invited to come by on those dates. Erica says, ”I am excited that one of my paintings (title: Waterdragon) is being used this year for the cover of the printed directory for the event.” For more info on the event, visit the ProArts website: http://www.proartsgallery.org/ebos/index.php

Chloe is a photographer with a passion for the personal in social justice issues. Much of her work focuses on expressions of the experience of being transgender or gender queer (Embrace Yourself, Transnormality)…images that challenge perception and defy judgment. Her series on gender-based violence (Scream Out Loud) graphically “depicts the terrible physical and emotional pain endured by women and children who are victim of violence, regardless its form.” Chloe’s work is currently on exhibit at the Kinsey Institute (Bloomington IN), and will also be displayed at Genderful, a photography exhibition celebrating gender identity diversity, at the LGBT Community Center in San Francisco on May 30th. SPRING 2013 THE BUZZ @ THE BOISE

The Restoration of Chez Panisse By Gene DeSmidt

I have also been doing photo shoots in various places in Oakland for a start up mag called "Urban Chic," along with friend Rhia…we have compiled an amazing series of local graffiti art photos (she also painted the "Gene " sign on my door at # 9.) She is a hip-hop songwriter and graffiti artist. As Val said to me the other day, we are on the verge of a neighborhood renaissance....in the midst of pimps, prostitutes, homeless, shopping carts and day laborers there has been a noticeable upswing of burgeoning arts, crafts, restaurants and a growing community consciousness. On our little island in this vast and varied city...we all can

continue to create something special.

Friendship Tea

18 ounces Tang drink mix 1 cup instant tea mix (unsweetened) 2 cups sugar 1 pkg. lemonade drink mix (unsweetened) 1 ½ tsp. ground cinnamon ¾ tsp. ground cloves

Mix and place into a covered jar or other container. For hot tea mix 2-3 tablespoons to 1 cup of hot water. For iced tea mix, substitute cold water and pour over ice. For a nice extra spice: prepare hot tea & add a teaspoon of cinnamon red-hot candies… stir until dissolved.

Makes a nice gift!

I am writing from my live/work space at the The Boise with an update of recent activities. After a road trip with the Guv Jerry Brown to look at a site for his retreat in Colusa County (see photo)...I arrived home to be shocked by the news that there had been a fire in Berkeley at the famous Chez Panisse restaurant, owned and operated by World Master Chef Alice Waters. In short order I called my friend Kip Mesirow who built the original restaurant 35 years ago to come out and help redesign the new structure...we spent the next 10 days doing master sketches of the new concept. I was assigned the role of General Contractor for the repair and renovation and we have begun the process of rebuilding ~~seeing the Phoenix rise from the ashes...

Garden Goings-On The shared garden at the Boise is a little oasis in the middle of industrial, concrete East Oakland. Please be considerate of your neighbors by taking responsibility for cleaning up after your pets & your parties. Dog feces, beer cans, and stray trash spoil the fun for all of us.

Let’s keep our garden fresh & clean!
