"The public deserves consultation before such radical changes are made to speed limits that affect all road users," said Blight. Anyone who relies on the Newell Highway is encouraged to go to the local NRMA office at Central Motors and sign the NRMA's petition. The petition asks NSW Parliament to ensure that the Roads and Traffic Authority does not reduce the speed limit on the Newell Highway without conducting a formal public consultation process, and providing evidence that its plan will not have an adverse impact on driver fatigue and safety. The action is in response to plans outlined in the RTA's 2009 Newell Highway Safety Review to reduce the Newell Highway speed limit from 110km/h to 100km/h - a move that would have major implications for Newell Highway communities and drivers. "All vehicles will be forced to travel at 100km/h under the proposed 10km/h reduction, creating all sorts of safety issues for overtaking and long queues on a road that has overtaking lanes on only nine per cent of its length," Mr Blight said. HAPPY MOVEMBER! Now in its sixth year, Movember is a month-long fundraising event where men start clean shaven grow a mous-tache over the month. Each Mo Bro effectively becomes a walking billboard for men’s health and raises essential funds and awareness for Movember’s men’s health partners: The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia; and beyondblue - the national depression initiative. Last year there were over 40 Canowindra Mo Bros, and this year it looks as though there will be more. During this month The Phoenix will publish names to help get some donations for each Bro in this fun and worthy fundraising event. If you are a Mo Bro, come into The Phoenix office so that a Wall of Fame can be established, as unfortunately there is not enough room in the paper to publish all your photos. This will give the community the opportunity to see your unshaven start, and progress throughout the month. Names will be published to help all of your fundraising efforts. Current Mo Bros are: Nick Carne of Comprinting, Peter Stacey of Little Poppets, and Jamie Andrews of Hamilton’s Bluff.

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields, Sleep sweet - to rise anew!

We caught the torch you threw And holding high, we keep the Faith

With All who died. We cherish, too, the poppy red

That grows on fields where valor led; It seems to signal to the skies

That blood of heroes never dies, But lends a lustre to the red

Of the flower that blooms above the dead

In Flanders Fields. And now the Torch and Poppy Red We wear in honor of our dead.

Fear not that ye have died for naught; We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought

In Flanders Fields. Moina Michael November 1918

RUST & DUST EXHIBITION AT TASTE Granddaughter and grandniece of local Canowindra artists, Isobel Carman and Merle Robinson, V Ananda Ma has art in her blood. “It’s the primary driving passion” she said when asked about working as an artist. Recently returned from an extended sojourn in the USA Ananda Ma is fueled up, armed with thousands of photo-graphs, fresh ideas and paint brushes at the ready. This work, however, is a departure from her usual esoteric portraiture style. “I was so struck by the beauty of Canowindra I wanted to be more hands on with it and that lead me to gorgeous rusty corrugated iron”. The ‘Rust & Dust’ exhibition combines esoteric elements in sculptural plaques formed from corrugated iron, wire and predominately found materials. It’s recycling with a twist. The ‘not so precious’ metals have been adorned, engraved and treated so they will continue to evolve long after the exhibition. The resurrection of something lost to the rust and dust is now appreciated in it’s ever evolving present form. Rust & Dust opens at taste Canowindra 13 November. Dinner is 2 course alternate serve 7pm for 7:30 at $33 per person. Call taste Canowindra now to book in for this unique exhibition with a truly local flavour.

into your garden, eg Bean, Chinese cabbage, carrot, okra and parsnip. Heat-loving herbs such as basil, coriander and chilli.

Last chance to plant Summer and Autumn flowering bulbs such as dahlias, gladiolus and nerines.

Check drip irrigation systems and replace broken parts and clean any blockages.

Cut lawns as high as you can to help shade the soil and reduce water loss.

Stand pot plants in saucers of water on hot, windy days to stop them wilting.

Feed rose bushes with blood and bone, water well.

Divide and re-pot orchids if they have formed a dense clump.

Plant red and white annuals for Christmas colour.

MULCH MULCH MULCH it’s predicted to be one of the hottest, driest Summers, so help prevent moisture loss from around the base of your plants.

CAPTAIN LYCRA RIDES AGAIN! Andrew Holmes returned home a sore yet happy man, after riding the 90km Sydney to Wollongong course in a respectable 3 hours 20 minutes on Sunday. Andrew raised $1,925 for MS Australia, from donations made by family and friends. Local business who deserve a mention for supporting this great cause are: The Shearing Shed: Hair and Beauty, Canowindra Trading Post, Rosnay Wines, Lucerne Foods Parts & Machinery, Bennett Keogh & Associates, D&E Electrical and Everview Retreat. Andrew sincerely thanks all who sponsored him, “I’m impressed and proud of all my friends, family and community for their generosity, thank you!” Now it’s a fight between D&E Electrical and Durko, as equal highest sponsors, to see who gets the signed poster-sized copy of Holmesy’s picture to hang on their wall! Andrew’s riding team of 37 members, Figures and Fur, raised a healthy $25,138 for MS Australia.

JUNIOR CRICKET At the High School on Saturday, Canowindra’s U14s captain Rohan Toole won the toss against Cowra Cash and sent them in to bat. This decision paid off immediately as Zac Webster was out first ball, caught and bowled by Rohan. Gaghe Nelligan was next to go, bowled by Michael Watt. Alex Webster [4], Bede Leyland [3] and Sean Simpson [13] all retired before Dylan White was bowled by Alex Willson, and Shaun Mortyne was caught and bowled by Harry Whatman. Lucas Hayes and Kalin Farrell-Grey saw out the innings on 15 and 11 respectively, for a team total of 73. Canowindra opened confidently with Rohan Toole and Simon Whatman scoring at will as Rohan retired on 28 after eight overs, which included five 4s. Simon was bowled by Dylan White for 4 while Tim Middleton retired on 9 after his overs. Michael Watt was caught, Shaun Mortyne bowled Bede Leyland before Alex Willson came in and plundered the bowling before he retired on 23.
