Rev. Sue Watkins, Pastor
From Our Pastor
The Chimes
First Presbyterian Church of Puyallup
We are excited to announce that, as of April 1, Nicole McKnight is serving as our Parish Associate for Pastoral Care! The purpose of the position of Parish Associate is to provide, on a part time basis, supplementary pastoral services to the congregation as well as pastoral support as it relates to additional specific responsibilities in congregational life. The position is established at the invitation of and nomination by the Pastor, and by confirmation of the Session.
Many of us remember how faithfully Ken Turney served in this capacity.
It is a gift to have someone whose spiritual gifts include kindness and compassion come alongside our pastor in the important ministry of pastoral care. That was true of Ken, and it is true of Nicole. Eric Renz also served faithfully as our Parish Associate for Adult Education in recent years. He provided extra leadership for Adult Bible studies and discussion groups.
This new role for Nicole confirms the relationship we already have with her as a pastoral presence in
our church family. Her primary ministry remains as a chaplain for Good Samaritan and Tacoma General hospitals. Nicole is receiving a small stipend of $350 per month from FPC.
We have learned from our organist Andy Maurice that he will be leaving us this summer. While we
are sorry to see him go, we are excited for the opportunity for advancement this represents in his Naval career. His last Sunday with us will be July 29. In preparation for his new assignment in Guam, Andy will be away almost half of the Sundays from April through June. Fortunately, he will be with us throughout the month of July. Please take the time to let him know how much you appreciate his musical contributions to our worship!

Deacons Solve a Problem
First Presbyterian Church is offering scholarships to students who are continuing their education. Applications are available in the church office and church website www.fpcpuyallup.org/scholarships.html and are due back to the church office by Monday, May 1 at Noon. There are two different scholarship programs and each requires a separate application.
Both scholarships are open to applicants continuing their education in a four-year university, community college, technical school, or graduate school and ‘running start’ students. Scholarship recipients will be announced Graduation Sunday in June. Please note: This year scholarship checks will be issued directly to the school, not the individual receiving the scholarship.
Scholarship Applications Available
The Deacons recently noticed a real problem. Our Deacons’ fund balance had grown fairly high. What to do? Give it away! After researching a number of agencies and considering several options our solution was to divide $2,000 this way:
Double our monthly donation to the Puyallup Food Bank. Give to Amara. This organization has locations in Pierce and King Counties. They offer
emergency sanctuary to children removed from their homes. They license foster and adoptive parents, and have post-adoptive training workshops. To learn more about this project, visit: amaraputkidsfirst.org
Give to Step by Step. Located in Puyallup, Step by Step’s Mission is “…to transform the lives of at-risk pregnant women, so they will deliver a healthy baby, embrace positive parenting, and establish a safe home.” For more information, please visit: stepbystepfamily.org
Thanks to the generosity of our church family, we had a problem, which led to joy in giving to
these worthy agencies.
On the Gifts of Women Sunday, Gert Williams was recognized with the Life Membership for Presbyterian Women. Gert joined First Presbyterian Church in March of 2001. She has served two terms as Deacon and three terms as a Ruling Elder. Her many responsibilities/involvements include making slides for video presentations, the care and changing of the paraments, arranging for hanging of cloth on the high cross for Christmas & Easter, assisting in the sanctuary Christmas decoration, making jam and preparing information
folders about the church visitors, preparing bags of activities items for children during worship times, preparing information folders and items to hand out during summer Farmer’s Markets, singing in the Choir, playing in the Bell Choir, serves Freezing Nights during their early mornings, and as a Presbyterian Women member, attends circle meetings and is a facilitator for the Least Coin, and is always a helper! Gert is a blessing to us!

A Message from our Financial Secretary
Our thoughts and prayers go Out to the family of
David Barclay Who passed away on
March 4, 2018
Thank you from my visiting brother-in-law and nephew. They enjoyed the delicious jam and appreciated warm greetings from our church
members. Neither of them had previously heard a hand
bell choir, so this was a special treat for them.
I would also like to give a well-deserved word of thanks
to Cheryl Hodgson for presenting outstanding
children’s sermons year after year. Her faithful service
has certainly earned her a gold star!
