Being relatively new to the club, I was faced with the usual feeling of being an outsider. My plan was to get involved in the running of the club and thereby get to know the key people from the inside out. It worked and I encourage any of you to try the same thing. Once you gain the confidence of the key people, you can relax and really start enjoying all that our great club has to offer. My biggest regret is that I was not able to take part in more of our on-water activities. There is truly a smörgåsbord of activities ranging from helping with the Summerset Regatta, helping with the River Romp Regatta, Racing to Key West or spending a relaxing Thanksgiving in Cabbage Key. This club has something for every kind of Sailor and this Sailor will make a better effort in 2016 to take a more active part on the water. We had quite a few accomplishments in 2015. This is super im- portant because it allows anyone who is interested in getting more involved in the running of the club to see what they would be getting themselves into. It sure can't hurt to be looking and thinking ahead. Thanks Rodger. Stephanie Webb and Bev Duff took on another daunting task, that of bringing our Club Bylaws up to date. Getting the whole Board of Directors involved in looking at the wording and mean- ing of each line was very tedious and took much time, but the end result is a very comprehensive set of guidelines. Thank you Stephanie and Bev. Along the line we were able to congratulate our Senior Honorary Member Steve Colgate on both his induction into the National Sailing Hall of Fame and running his Offshore Sailing School for 50 years. In addition one of the young sailors the club has sponsored through the Edison Sailing Center, Jack Gower, was very suc- cessful racing in the Laser Fleet on the National Level, finishing in the top 10% of three major regattas. As a result, he has been invited to attend Olympic Development Clinics. Go Jack! The last big thing we accomplished was hosting the 50 th Annual Summerset Regatta. Most of the credit goes to Steve Romaine, who almost single-handedly assembled a list of over one hun- dred sponsors, and seventy participating yachts, generating over $20,000.00 that we will be able to dole out to Youth Sailing Pro- grams up and down the West Coast. But he could not make it happen alone. He has had a dedicated committee, spearheaded by people like Suzanne Aguilara, Kathleen Vance, Carol Pim and of course Cindy Carlino who have been with him for five or more years. It was truly a fantastic accomplishment accentuated by an Awards Dinner at the Diamond Head Resort attended by over one hundred seventy-five people. Steve, we just can't thank you enough! What a year! All in all, it has been a very interesting experience. How could I go wrong hanging out with a bunch of people who Love Sailing as much as I do? The only thing left on my 2015 club calendar is the Change of Watch Dinner on Jan 9. It makes for a Super Special Occasion when you bring together the group of members who care enough to really get involved and help make things happen. Rear Commodore of Cruising’s Report

Thanks to everyone who raisedtheir hand and volunteered thispast year. The many hands madelight work. From Rose Ann andPaul making EPOL happen at thestart to Carolyn and Dan ringing inthe New Year, I have been blessedwith a fleet of cruise leaders andvolunteers. In the course of theyear we had 72 different boats take

part in one or more of the club’s 15 ‘official cruises’.Individual boat participation ranged from 1 to 12cruises with the average per boat just over 3. Wehad 18 boats that ‘qualified’ on the cruising side forBomgardner consideration. That meant they partici-pated in at least 5 cruises.

The Club is really lucky to have Jean Blessing herd-ing the cats (and monohulls ;-) this coming year. However, just like I couldn’t do it alone, neither canshe. So please raise your hand. Certainly, everyone of those 18 boats that ‘qualified’ for Bomgard-ner can offer to do at least one cruise. Look at nextyear’s calendar and make the offer to Jean beforethe begging begins. Pay it forward.

I think everyone generally had a good time this pastyear which I considered the goal. I am sure Jeanwould like to hear suggestions for the New Year. What surprised me the most this past year is howlittle the opportunity there is to ‘innovate’. Work onthe calendar begins the June before in order to co-ordinate scheduling with racing. The calendar is putto bed long before the new rear commodore takesover. The list of marinas and slots that can andwant to accommodate 15+ sail boats is not long.Same on anchorages reasonably close. We haveover the last couple of years had a tough time fillingthe ‘longer’ cruises. This past year was no excep-tion.

I am constantly amazed that weather is not more ofan issue. This is a great climate with only the sum-mer being a challenge. We know enough to sched-ule ‘plug-in’ cruises for those months. We do getrained on but only very rarely is it enough to spoilthe whole weekend. And often the rain is inland or intown but not in Pine Island Sound. This is not tosay you should feel secure in building your DangerIsland Chowder shack out of cardboard. ;-). Perfectweather is the enemy of good enough when decid-ing whether to go. On a ‘too windy’ Thanksgivingwe had a blast sailing to Cabbage Key (and weeven sailed about halfway back on Sunday). Wehad Alice’s Restaurant on the stereo and followedthe sail with ‘a Thanksgiving Dinner that couldn’t bebeat‘. We suffer so……

Thanksgiving Cruise Recap

For the long Thanksgiving weekend the weathergods provided us with sunny skies, perfect tempera-tures, and fast sailing winds which provided somerecord fast passages up to Pelican Bay.

As is typical for this cruise, and as expected for ourunique little society, boats came and went as fit theirpersonal desires.

When the cruise leaders (i.e. the members that saidthey'd keep an inventory of attendees) arrived onTuesday, they found six boats starting the cruise aday early - Air Boss, Blank Check, Bridget O'Toole,Freestyle, Lionheart, and Zydeco. As is the traditionfor this cruise, we gathered every evening on abeach at sunset.

Wednesday evening six more boats had joined thecrowd. Jolly Mon, Kestrel II, Never Say Never, ProRe Nata, Rum Daze, and Seamist. As you canguess, after exploring the State Park, and the bay,we again gather on a beach to celebrate yet anotherday in paradise.

By Thursday we had four more join us. Four Sea-sons, Mischief,Trust Me, andVayu arrivedjust in time forour terrific 2 PMThanksgivingdinner, with allthe traditional trimmings, at Cabbage Key. All to-gether we had 28 Society members for dinner.

Friday and Saturday saw six more boats arrive.Ariel, Barefeet, Chase the Clouds, White Star, Sam-phire, and Tyrolia. We can safely say that everynook and cranny of the bay, the park, and thebeaches were explored. Much food and drink wasconsumed. And many tales were told – whether trueor not, no one really cares. All told, 22 vesselstransporting 45 members ventured out.

Respectfully submitted by cruise leaders,

Glen & Paula Vetters/v Freestyle

The 2015 CMCS racing sea-son ended on a somewhatdisappointing note. Fore-cast high winds and smallcraft warnings necessitatedcanceling the Commodore'sCup Regatta which hadbeen scheduled for Decem-ber 5th. Many thanks toDave Dumas who hadplanned to be the PRO, andDan Green and Carolyn Wil-son for arranging to be theCommittee Boat, and Bob Kuhn and Eric Milbrandt, volunteers for mark boat duty. There are no currentplans to reschedule the Regatta.

Our 2016 racing season opens with the famous ChiliCook-off Regatta, our first buoy races, on January23rd. There is currently no Rear Commodore ofRacing arranged for 2016. I have offered to fill in ona limited basis for the next couple of races, but theclub would benefit from someone volunteering totake on this role.
