REFLECTION

!

!May 26, 2019!6th Sunday of Easter!!

Theology has two words to describe the space between God and us ! transcendent and immanent. When we say God is transcendent, we speak of the One whose ways are not our ways, the placer of stars and maker of mountains. This is God who transcends our understanding, whose being goes beyond what we can know. When we say God is immanent, we mean His nearness to us. This is the way Jesus speaks of himself in today's Gospel. "Whoever loves me keeps my word...and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him." !!

The Hebrews saw God as intimately involved with the fate of their people. But for all His care, God was still distant to most. He spoke through prophets and was represented in blazes of fire and pillars of cloud. Priests offered animal sacrifice to atone for the nation's sins. While we still know that God is transcendent ! any morning's resplendent sunrise confirms this ! Jesus introduces us to himself in a new way. Not only does Jesus walk among us, but the Holy Spirit dwells within us. "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit...will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I told you. Peace I leave with you!"!!

How do you tend to view God? For many of us, the transcendent sense of a distant God might fill our perception. Today's Gospel reminds us of something altogether different, something more intimate. Our God remains with us. He overcomes the confusion of the world and speaks peace to our troubled hearts. Our God is not far from us. The more we remain connected to Him and love as He loved, the more we will experience His nearness. We can have confidence in His presence and rest in His encouragement: "Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid."

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP!!

The death of a family member or friend confronts us with one of life’s most difficult and painful challenges. The Archdiocese of New York’s Pastoral Bereavement Program of the is the Church’s response to God’s call

to comfort those who mourn. The Program began more than 20 years ago and has grown to include over 50 parishes throughout the Archdiocese of New York.!

Parish!based bereavement support groups, facilitated by trained volunteers, are the cornerstone of the Pastoral Bereavement Program. Our support group meets in our parish rectory (130 Midland Avenue) and is open to people of all faiths. Our bereavement ministers’ goal is to provide a safe place where the bereaved can share their experiences with others, learn about the process of grief and be supported by their Church family during a difficult time.!

The Sessions have started and will run until Jun 11, 2019 on Tuesdays from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. !

If you are interested in attending a Bereavement sup-port group or would like additional information, you may call St. Christopher Rectory at 718 351! 2452. !

Please inform the office staff if you would like a member of the Bereavement team to call you back.

Capodanno Boulevard and Midland Avenue where a short ceremony will take place. All are welcome to come back to the Olympia Activity Center for coffee and cake.

There will be a special second collection on this day for the upkeep of the monu-ment, thank you in advance for your !generosity.!

Congratulations to Fr. John who, on May 14th, celebrated his 25th anniversary of priesthood ordination. He has been with us here since 2011 and has been ministering at Staten Island University Hospital since 2001. While serving at the hospital he has cele-brated Holy Masses and celebrated the sacraments wherever he has lived. We are blessed to have him here, and I have been blessed to know him since our seminary days. !

Speaking of seminary, Joseph Akunaeziri, the seminarian who was with us last Summer, and who celebrated a Mass as a deacon back in the Fall, will be ordained a priest on May 25, 2019 at 9am in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Please pray for him and his classmates to be holy and faithful priests. Deacon Joseph has offered a few tickets for the Mass at the Cathedral ! if interested call the rectory.!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION!

We will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from the regular times of 12Noon to 4:30pm. The church will still remain open on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the same times. We are considering an evening holy hour, and will keep you posted.Sometimes we call this time of exposition “adoration.” However, Jesus is still present in the tabernacle, and so can be adored in the

church. Jesus does not need to be exposed to be adored. Jesus is present to us in the Blessed Sacrament, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, and is inviting us to adore Him. We join our prayers, works, joys and sufferings with His and “by the mercies of God, present [our] bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is [our] spiritual wor-ship” (Romans 12:1).
