Reflection from Father Tom Faith Formation

Normal Faith Formation Classes are happening this Wednesday December 18th at the Parish Center. We encourage our Faith For-mation parents to partici-pate in the Communal Pen-

ance Service this Wednesday evening after you drop your Faith Formation students off at Faith Formation. The service will conclude in time to pick up your stu-dents at 7:45. Faith Formation students will have an opportunity to do Reconciliation at another time.

For our most up to date menu check the parish website www.smm-gv.org under the Faith Formation tab to see what is for dinner. You can also check the menu on our Facebook page – St. Margaret Mary Church, be

sure to “Like” our page”.

On Friday December 27th our middle school and high school youth will have the chance to find Waldo at our Waldo Photo Hunt at Mall of America. Permission slips were passed out at Faith For-mation last week but will also be available on our website on the Faith For-mation page. This trip is

open to all middle school and high school youth (grades 6 -12) and their friends. Permission slips and pre-registration is a must. The only cost for the day long trip is your money for food and purchases you make at MOA. You may also bring a bag lunch to cut down on food cost. We will leave that day about 9:45 am from the Parish Center and return some time that evening around 7:00 pm. Students under the age of 18 must stay with a chaperoned group the entire time per MOA rules. Text or call Tim Stanoch at 612-567-0052 with any questions.

Preparing for Christmas

As Christmas draws near, we are busy shopping and get-ting the gifts wrapped, but in the Gospel Jesus invites us to imitate John the Baptist. Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you.

Sharing with others what we have is the way to prepare for Christmas because Christmas is the celebration of God‘s sharing His only Son with this world. It is by giv-ing that we receive. We should share out of our need ra-ther than sharing in order to get rid of things from our closets.

In the second reading the apostle James reminds us to be patient and firm while waiting for the Lord. Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. He fur-ther instructs us, do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates. Take as an exam-ple of hardship and patience, brothers and sisters, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Complain-ing about one another is not a Christian attitude. If we really want to prepare for Christmas with Joy, then we need to change our hearts. The change of our hearts makes the birth of Jesus a reality in our homes and our community.

A burden shared becomes light. A long journey traveled with love becomes short. A Christmas shared with gifts of gratitude becomes meaningful. Wishing a joyful Advent!

Singing carols is one of the most cherished traditions of the Christ-mas season. This year the Young Christians will lead us in singing the much-loved and familiar carols on Tuesday, Dec 24 at 3:30 pm, fol-lowed by the 4:30 Christmas Eve mass. In addition to lifting our own

voices in praise and joy, we will have the opportunity to hear our young people do some special pieces. And wait…there’s more! We have talented young musicians who play piano, saxophone, violin, percussion and hand chimes ready to enhance our music with instruments! This is a time to sing and support the youth of our parish. We hope that many of you will come and participate, whether or not you stay for mass. It will be joyous, inspiring, and the per-fect way to begin your participation in this holy celebra-tion of the birth of Jesus!

It was great to see so many people last Saturday at our Adult Faith Formation 2019 Advent Reflection with Fr. Michael Joncas. Thanks to all who brought treats and re-freshments. The day was packed with amazing content from Fr. Michael. Thanks to Dennis Becker who was up-stairs recording the whole session. If you were unable to make the day contact the parish office to see the record-ing.
