INFOSYS FOUNDATION’S POLICY OF DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS Infosys foundation distributes funds based on

its employee strength in different states of India

REASONS : 1) To motivate employees & increase their

confidence and loyalty in the firm. 2) To uplift the standard of living of employees

and the local people in the vicinity of company’s establishments

3) To create a long term prospects and develop relationship with them

4) To create a healthy public image in states wherever they have business.

IS THE POLICY RIGHT ?The policy is biased one but in compliance with

Infosys’s long term goals in each state.

The contribution of Infosys foundation in its selected development centres (DC) can definitely increase it’s reputation in these states.

Rather than going national and doing ‘less’, if the company is focusing on small DC’s and doing ‘more’. Its definitely taking strategic CSR steps

The policy will definitely be a ‘welcome invitation’ by other states where Infosys wants to enter in future.

2) ‘IT IS BETTER TO LIGHT A CANDLE THAN REMAIN IN DARKNESS’ – MRS. SUDHA MURTHY

Darkness signifies ‘ignorance’ and its always better to create ‘awareness’ by lighting a candle of ‘knowledge’.

Infosys believes in giving in ‘kind’; rather than ‘cash’ as it uses its leadership via foundation rather than only tie-ups with NGOs.

Infosys helps people to empower rather than providing just support.

Its important to improve social and economical structure of the surrounding in which company operates as it is an ‘open system’.

3) TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE BENEFIT

The triple bottom line also known as "people, planet, profit" or "the three pillars” captures an expanded spectrum of values and criteria for measuring organizational success: social, ecological and economic.

Page 7: The Concept of Giving Back

PEOPLE

People are also known as human capital In this part of the TBL, business not only

ensures a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay but also reinvests some of its profits into the surrounding community through education, sponsorships, or donations, or helping in projects that promote the common good

Page 8: The Concept of Giving Back

PLANET

Under the planet principle, or natural capital, a business will endeavour to minimize its ecological impact in all areas

It is a “cradle to grave” attitude i.e. taking responsibility for goods after they’ve been sold

for example- offering a recycling or return program

Page 9: The Concept of Giving Back

PROFIT

TBL is about making a principled profit, rather than earning a profit at any cost

In other words, the profit made should be in accordance with the other two principles of People and Planet.

Page 10: The Concept of Giving Back

ADVANTAGES

A TBL business endeavours to benefit the natural order as much as possible—or at least do no harm and curtail environmental impact

Page 11: The Concept of Giving Back

DISADVANTAGES

• Quantifying this bottom line is a relatively new task. Therefore, it is sometimes problematic and often subjective

• The types of problems that occur in social and environmental realms do not lend themselves to a measure that would allow for clear-cut accounting

• How, in financial terms, do you measure the two factors of People and Planet?

4) COMPARISON OF CSR POLICY OF DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS

Distribution of funds is based on employee strength in different states of India.

Based on long term strategic CSR decisions

Criteria used by Azim Premji Foundation :

Education Econmical health Learning levels No. of dropout

students

Based on needs of people

INFOSYS FOUNDATION AZIM PREMJI FOUNDATION

Page 13: The Concept of Giving Back

WHICH ONE IS SUPERIOR CRITERIA?

Both have different strategies related to their CSR initiatives.

There are advantages and disadvantages in both the criteria’s.

But from the humanity aspect the distribution criteria by AZIM PREMJI FOUNDATION is superior.

Reasons:1) It is unbiased and has a pan India approach.2) It is actually beneficial to ‘Needy’ communities

rather than just ‘future prospects’.3) The approach is more pragmatic and less

driven by selfish long term business motives.4) No discrimination between states is done.

5) CSR FOR CREATING ‘PUBLIC IMAGE’

Carrying out social welfare activities with the sole intention of boosting their public image & increase in business, is definitely a wrong practice.

The ‘driving force’ is itself ‘wrong’ so commitment will be half-hearted and very short term.

The more and more emphasis will be on ‘showing’ rather than ‘doing’ any welfare.

It will not be a long term involvements. Foundation will not be sustainable

Page 15: The Concept of Giving Back

6) GANDHINIAN CONCEPT OF ‘TRUSTEESHIP’ : IMPLEMENTATION IN INFOSYS

Gandhinian concept of trusteeship is based on ‘economical equality’;

The concept sees private capital as being custodians of wealth on behalf of greater public to whom it actually belongs into public property.

Infosys also believes in ‘giving back to society’Infosys technologies ltd. created ‘Infosys

foundation’ a not-for-profit organization in 1997 with the objective of supporting underprivileged in our society.

Company financially supports this foundation

Page 16: The Concept of Giving Back

Foundation gives

30% of its funds to senior Citizens and handicapped,

15% for rural development. 30% for education 10% for health care

Page 17: The Concept of Giving Back

CONCLUSION

TBL is the innovation in CSR

CSR is entering in third generation, as companies are taking leadership in CSR and creating their own not-for-profit organizations

Infosys Foundation is definitely giving back to society by its contribution in selected states

Its important for Infosys to keep track of the developments in the activities which they start under CSR.
