With summer comes the expectation of change. You can almost feel the change coming from around the corner as temperatures begin to rise, flowers start to explode with color, and we anticipate good times ahead. Summer always seems to bring with it an air of relaxation, but with it also comes the stress of change in the form of HEAT! Change can break a human spirit, if it’s allowed to, but it can also produce opportunities for FUN.

Christ Church is getting ready to experience some changes. Change comes in June when Preston Morgan joins our staff, and again in July with Dan Conway’s arrival. We can choose to complain and stress about these changes, like we do when the heat of summer arrives, OR we can embrace these changes as opportunities for FUN! We have been pushing so hard for so many months, readying ourselves for change, completing challenges and finally preparing to meet new opportunities. I am ready to “ride the wave” that this summer will bring, and pray you will join me in doing the same!

I would like to personally thank each and every one of you who has chosen to serve Christ. At this time, we have already had over 438 people turn in their SERVE forms, which is more people than last year! This is part of that change I am talking about. There are so many exciting happenings around the church because of Christ’s working in and through you! So invite your friends! Look for opportunities to be a part of the ‘big picture’ that God has laid out before us.

One way to secure those memories for ourselves and future generations is to “put it in writing.” Jan Randolph will lead this monthly writers’ workshop designed to instruct, inspire, encourage and support participants in the writing process. Our explorations will include (but not necessarily be limited to) memoirs, journal writing, prayer journals, faith stories, family narratives, and poetry. Just bring paper and pencil and your mind full of stories.

On June 2, we will begin Beth Moore’s A Woman’s Heart. In this study, Beth Moore invites women to enter the sanctuary and let God reveal marvelous mysteries to them. GOT EXTRA WHEELS? BICYCLE DRIVE SATURDAY, JUNE 1 AND SUNDAY, JUNE 2 DONATE BIKES BY PLAYGROUND FENCEAllow God to change your unwanted bike, tricycle, scooter or wagon into something useful. Our brothers in Christ at the Vance Unit volunteer their time repairing bicycles and other non-motorized wheeled vehicles for needy children in the Third Ward and other areas of Houston. No bike is useless – they can be used for parts. The refurbished bikes and other items will be given as Christmas gifts this December. The men at Vance want to help as many children as possible. Help them meet their goal and make a child’s day! On Saturday, June 1 by 2 pm OR during Sunday morning services on June 2, park your donation by the playground fence along the sidewalk to the office entrance. Questions? CHURCH-WIDE UMCOR HANDS ON PROJECT 2013 SUNDAY, JUNE 2 AND SUNDAY, JUNE 9 • MINISTRY CENTER BETWEEN ALL SERVICESUMCOR is the relief and humanitarian arm of the Methodist Church. UMCOR provides relief, support and necessities to people here in the US and all around the world during times of crisis. This year, UMW of Christ Church is sponsoring our church-wide, hands-on mission project to donate sewing kits to UMCOR. These kits will be distributed to those in need around the world and right here in our region. These kits make a tangible difference in the lives of people. CARE TEAM, HEARTS OF GRACE OPENINGSHas God given you a compassionate heart? Do you have the gift of connecting others with God’s love? The Monday morning Care Team ministry needs a few more willing, compassionate servants to join their team. Members meet from 10 am to noon on Mondays to report on their contacts with those who’ve submitted prayer requests. Hearts of Grace meets Wednesday mornings to pray for those same requests. Christ Church is known in our community as a “praying church” and the Care Team and Hearts of Grace ministries are a huge reason why that is so. FYSH ‘HOME BASE’ CAMP 2013 MONDAY, JUNE 10 - THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 2013 • 8:30 AM TO 3 PM • FLC GYM AND SURROUNDING AREAAll youth who have completed 5th - 8th grade as of June 2013 are invited to join us this summer for FYSH ‘Home Base’ Camp. Designed especially for middle school youth, FYSH ‘Home Base’ is a day camp which will include a service project in the surrounding area each morning, followed by a fun activity in the afternoon. This is a great opportunity to help your student find their servant heart in a home-based environment, and to have them meet new friends through service, fellowship and worship.

Cost: $85 (Youth); Adult Chaperones/Drivers are free of charge. A non-refundable deposit of $25 is due at registration through May 15. Remaining balance is due May 30. Deadline to register: May 31, 2013.

TWO SERVE MINISTRIES CELEBRATE THEIR FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARYOne year ago two faithful women began a new monthly support group for all cancer survivors and their caregivers. Using the curriculum “Reconstruction of a Survivor,” this group meets monthly to help those affected by cancer. Participants pray for each other, support each other, and laugh and cry together. Newly diagnosed persons may enter the group at any time. “Colors of Cancer” meets every 3rd Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 pm in the Volunteer Center. A year ago, Christ Church added another prayer ministry, “Pray Now!”. This ministry is made up of volunteers who are willing to stop on a moment’s notice and go to God in prayer on behalf of persons in crisis due to an accident, emergency, or sudden loss. Volunteers are notified via email once the person calling the church requesting prayer has given permission for their concern to be shared. Christ Church says “thank you” to those who responded to God’s call in establishing these ministries. Both continue to fill a need, and both are open to others who desire to serve in this way. ADOPT A CRAFT FOR MEXICO VBS CALL MEXICO MISSIONS ASAP!Adopt-a-Craft Day - it’s a great family project! We need 4 families or individuals, each willing to come up with 2 VBS crafts for children in Mexico. You’ll be asked to purchase enough supplies to allow 350 children to make your crafts (you would have a $250 church budget), plus make some completed samples of each. No need to purchase markers, crayons, pencils, scissors or glue - the church will provide the children with these supplies. Your craft supplies and completed samples would need to be delivered to the church by the morning of July 8 so that they could be loaded into vans heading for the Mexico border. This is a great way to help the children of Mexico from your own casa! UM ARMY MISSION TRIP JULY 21 - 27 • ANGLETON, TXJoin us in the summer of 2013 for our UM ARMY Mission. During this week, participants will be assigned to work teams which combine their unique strengths and gifts in order to meet the home repair and maintenance needs of the less fortunate in the area. This is an amazing mission that allows us to share the Gospel message of love and hope offered by Jesus Christ through our hands and our hearts. Parent volunteers and adult drivers are needed. Price of $275 will include all food, transportation and lodging.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY MONDAYS & FRIDAYS • 9 AM • VOLUNTEER CENTERJoin members of all ages as they create tangible expressions of the prayers of our church for those needing comfort, healing, assurance, and presence. ALTAR PRAYER PARTNERS WELCOMEDIn every Sanctuary service, worshipers are invited to spend time at the Altar in prayer. In two of the services, 8:15 and 11:05 am, Altar Prayer Partners come and stand behind the kneeling rail, ready to pray with any who kneel there and open their hands to receive prayer. Philippians 4:6-7 says: “Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Altar Prayer Partners seek the peace of Christ for those in need of prayer. If God has given you the ability to pray, consider becoming an Altar Prayer Partner in the 8:15 and 11:05 Sanctuary services. STOP SUMMER HUNGER FOOD DRIVEFor many students in East Fort Bend, summer means no school, and no school means no breakfast or lunch. During the summer, EFBHNM Food Pantry gives additional foods to families with children so they can have breakfast and lunch every day. As you leave church on June 16, an empty grocery sack with a needs list attached will be available for you to take as a reminder to donate. Foods needed most: jelly, peanut butter, crackers, canned meat (chicken, stew, chili), canned pasta, canned soup, Ramen noodles, flour (2 lb. bags), corn meal (2 lb. bags), sugar (2 lb. bags). Also needed: laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, toothbrushes (individually packaged), shampoo. Please place your donations in the collection barrels in the Gathering Hall and Family Life Center on June 23 or June 30.

What is your favorite Bible scripture – or Bible character?

Assuming Jesus is a given, I have to claim David to be my favorite character. David had moments of bravery and cowardice, righteousness and sinfulness, humility and pride. Each time he falls and fails, David comes back to God again and again to renew his relationship with the LORD. David is also a true warrior-poet. David’s life and relationship with God has highs and lows like the rest of us, yet he becomes a favored king and man of God.

Do you have a most embarrassing moment you want to share?

When I was a youth director, I and our youth intern were the Advance Team on a mission trip because we were the Programs Staff for the camp. We had to travel to the site and set up the church, dorms, and construction sites a day before any churches arrived. We left Dallas around 3:00am for the 9-hour drive, worked all day when we arrived, and by the time we left to head to our hotel, it was a few hours before sunrise. Needless to say, we were tired. We went to our hotel to check in for a few hours of sleep, but they didn’t have our reservation. Both of he and I had our heads on the check-in desk trying not to fall asleep while they were sorting things out. A few minutes later, the front desk clerk informed us that we were standing in the wrong hotel. Our hotel was next door.

What recharges your spiritual battery?

Seeing lives transformed recharges my spiritual battery. Offering Christ to the world recharges my spiritual battery. Also, participating in good potlucks and fellowship seems to do a spirit well. :-)

What is your favorite Bible scripture – or Bible character?

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” It is a scripture rich with the promise of each person having a divine calling and a unique life journey of significance.

Do you have a most embarrassing moment you want to share?

When I was in fourth grade, my little league baseball coach unintentionally gave the “steal a base” sign by touching his hat when I was on first base. The good news was I got a great jump on the pitcher and stole second base in plenty of time. The bad news was the bases were loaded, and I found my teammate already standing on second base with nowhere to go!

What recharges your spiritual battery?

Having regular times of devotional reading and listening to Christian music and sermon podcasts are spiritually energizing for me. I also find spiritual renewal in breaking the day to day routine with occasional retreats and conferences, missions experiences and learning new praise songs on the guitar.
