What if we all had to have the career we choose as a child? There would be many more ballerinas, ninjas and rock stars! What would you be? I was lucky; I was living my childhood dream career as a photographer, minus the fashion models, wild animals, and world travel. But when I was asked to take pictures for a magazine in Ocala, I thought I had my break! They wanted “ME” to take photos for a MAGAZINE!! I drove up to Ocala and did the photo shoot. In exchange for my services the publisher gave me photo credit in her magazine. When the first call came in for me to take photos for a family in Ocala, I was elated! When the second call came in, I was surprised! But by the time the third call came in, I was tired of to driving to Ocala. I called that publisher and asked her about her magazine, which was more like a community newsletter in a magazine format. I asked her if she could start one in Lake County because I would really like to market my services to my neighbors instead of driving to Ocala. She explained how the company works and that it’s set up by territories like a franchise,

and if I wanted a magazine in Lake County, I would have to start it. What? Me? I don’t know anything about publishing a magazine! I have 5 children, a growing photography career, and my husband has a business as well. I don’t have time to start a magazine. So I did what any sane person would do; I started a magazine. I started with a residential magazine in Mount Dora just over a year ago. But from the moment I sat in training to learn how to be a publisher, I knew I wanted to work with the Eustis Chamber.

I had the best time of my life sitting down and learning about your businesses these past few weeks and I plan to continue until I get to meet each one of you! I am passionate about local business and about this Chamber. I’m so excited that you are holding this magazine in your hands and reading this message right now! Thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

[ CHARITY SPOTLIGHT ] sponsored by Lake Eustis Chamber of Commerce

Facing cancer is hard. Having to travel out of town for treatment can make it even harder. Yet the American Cancer Society has a place

where cancer patients and their caregivers can find help and hope when home is far away - an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.

Each Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for lodging allows guests

to focus on getting well. Hope Lodge provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others. Every Hope Lodge also offers a variety of resources and information about cancer and how best to fight the disease.

Currently, there are 31 Hope Lodge locations throughout the United States. Accommodations and eligibility requirements may vary by location. To find out more about a Hope Lodge, please call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 for more information.

What is Hope Lodge?

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. For more than 100 years, The American Cancer Society has been leading the fight to end cancer. With your support, they have helped usher in an era where more people survive cancer than ever before. By translating their research findings into action, they have seen a 20% decline in US cancer death rates since the early 1990s.

The American Cancer Society attributes their success through charitable donations and fund raising events throughout the year. The Cattle Barons’ Ball is a tradition in Lake, Sumter, & Marion counties is just one of the many events that promises a variety of activities and fun for all who attend.

This year the Cattle Barons’ Ball ‘Denim and Diamonds’ will take place September 27th at The Grand Oaks Resort in Weirsdale, Florida. Since 2002, the Cattle Barons’ Ball of Lake, Sumter and Marion Counties has been the premier western-styled event to attend. A lively event drawing hundreds of supporters and guests; there are many things to do including Live and Silent Auctions, listen to live entertainment, enjoy dinner and dancing. The proceeds from the event will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Gainesville, FL. This western-themed event is one of a kind and one of the hottest events around. Shine up your fancy boots and grab your jeans for a fun filled night, auctions, music, dancing and food! Email [email protected] to order your tickets today!

[ MEMBER OF THE MONTH ]

COBB’S TRIANGLE TRACTORJerry Cobb has spent the majority of his life in Lake

County. He graduated from Eustis High School, and then joined the Marines. Upon returning from his time in the military he proceeded to take classes at Lake Vocational Tech (now known as Lake Tech) to learn mechanical trade for farm machinery. He spent several years working for dealerships in the area and was continuously approached about teaching at the Tech school. He declined at first; then his employer gave him an opportunity to teach for a year and if he didn’t like it, his job would be waiting for him.

Twenty-one years later, Jerry retired from teaching. While he was still teaching, Cobb’s Tractor was born. He opened a shop as a way to subsidize his family income and serviced much of the Lake County area’s farm equipment. He began the business with the concept of personal service; that over time, not only sold the equipment, but also repaired and provided replacement parts. A concept he continues to maintain today. Cobb’s Tractor is known for their one-on-one service.

Jerry has seen the farming industry dwindle in recent years with the increase of housing developments where orange groves and pastures once flourished. That has not stopped him from remaining successful; he carefully watched the industry and took on sales of lawn equipment for both commercial and residential use.

When asked about his success, he proudly stated that it was “good help” that got him to where he is today. He has

three mechanics on staff that combined have more than 100 years’ experience in servicing large and small equipment. He has always kept his business and personal assets separate and knew that success wasn’t going happen overnight. You have to work hard and gain the trust of the community in which you serve.

Jerry is a business leader that truly believes in giving back to the community. His love for teaching was more about the students than it was teaching by itself. He is a

strong advocate for helping our community’s children grow and prosper since they are our future. He has been known to provide his equipment to fairs for the children to sit on for pictures. Not to mention providing the equipment and his time for fall hayrides.

Jerry is very eager to offer suggestions and assistance to prospective and new business owners. The best advice he offers is to make sure you have a solid business plan that

includes separate capital to provide for personal needs. He recommends the Economic Development Center of Lake County for direct help with business plans, marketing ideas and numerous other assistance areas. It is free; there is not excuse to not take advantage of it.

He is also a strong advocate for joining your local chamber. By becoming involved with other business leaders, you can learn what works and what don’t, as well as networking amongst business leaders. Word of mouth is often the best advertising.

Jeanie Rutledge moved to Lake County 13 years ago. She was immediately hired by Comcast as a customer service rep and quickly worked her way into the position of Account Executive. Her primary function with Comcast is to assist local business owners with their communication needs. This includes internet, phone and, when necessary cable.

She takes on the role of educator with her clientele and business prospects. She doesn’t feel like she is ‘selling’ them the service, but rather educating them on the available options. Jeanie prides herself on being the first point of contact for all the needs of the small businesses in the area. She tends to focus on the small ‘Mom and Pop’ locations. It is her belief that everyone should work, live and shop locally and helping the small business owners find the most economical communication service.

Her biggest challenge is reaching the customer before they contact 1-800-COMCAST. She can often provide a much better package with discounted features that could financially hurt a small business if they were paying the quoted price from the call center. And if Jeanie helps establish the service packages, she can help with any changes and needs the customer would encounter (aside from technical concerns). She will guide the customer through the process of transferring service, new business and changes in existing plans.

If you need to change or establish service or know of business that needs assistance contact Jeanie at 352-504-8233. There are multiple programs for referrals that financially reward both existing customers and non-customers for referrals. Take advantage of these promotions and gain an advocate for the success of your small business today!

BACK-TO-SCHOOL, BACK-TO-WORKSeptember is a busy month.

We celebrate the American worker who made this country an economic powerhouse. Then we get back to work and send our children back to school.

When I was a teaching assistant in college, a former student walked up to me with a scowl. “Remember me? You flunked me last year in metaphysics!”

Without thinking, I blurted out: “You flunked yourself! All I

did was keep score!” Imagine his audacity of blaming me for his failure! He never

asked questions or came to my office seeking help. His failure was my fault! Or so he thought.

Unfortunately, our modern society has adopted a victimization mentality. As long as we are victims of circumstances, we will never be free. We can never aspire to better ourselves or our careers.

Thankfully, our ancestors did not adopt this philosophy. They took responsibility for their future, sought God’s help, and acted. They corrected inequities in the workplace. Their imagination guided them to turn science fiction into science fact. The only limits they knew were the limitations of their own making.

September is a good time to check up on our goals. It’s time to get “back-to-school” on the basics of success. Make needed adjustments. Refuse to accept mediocrity. Don’t allow circumstances to get in your way. Turn problems into opportunities. Renew your commitment to personal development.

Remember this universal law: If you want more, you have to be more. Or as Jesus said, “The laborer is worthy of his hire” (Luke 10:7).

If you find yourself stuck in the sugar sand of circumstances, you have a choice to make. You can stay there and spin your wheels, going deeper with each revolution. Or you call the Chamber of Commerce and the Center for Economic Development for help and advice.

And don’t forget spiritual resources that are also available for your success (Genesis 39:3).

Joanne Keller, ARNP has developed a practice based on her passion to help people make lifestyle changes to better health. She takes an approach that embraces functional medicine to find the root of the ailment. Functional medicine is a clinical practice of medicine that takes a patient oriented approach to holistic understanding and treatment to disease. This approach encompasses the mind, body and spirit together to reach a healthy solution to resolve ailments and diseases that are commonly masked with multiple pharmaceutical relief rather than finding the root cause.

When Joanne opened her practice she had finally realized her dream of helping people find alternatives to healthcare. She has drawn on her experience over the years to approach healthcare in a manner that reduces and, often, eliminates the

use of prescribed medications. She is a huge advocate of healthy eating and routine scanning of the body via thermal imaging. The thermal imaging is safer than the typically used radioactive x-rays and MRI/CT scans.

Using health education and working within an integrated medical approach, she has seen patients

completely come off medications for blood pressure, diabetes and hypertension. Often medications hold a long term effect that isn’t known individually until it is too late; finding a lifestyle solution to eliminate these unknown risks and finding the root of the condition is just part of her practice. She will not put her patients at risk by removing them from their prescribed medications until they have found a healthy solution and test results indicate that the medication is no longer needed.

Her practice has grown immensely over the past several years. She has recently brought Tamara to work alongside her part time. One of the many things that set Joanne and her practice apart from other health providers is that she doesn’t just give you a five minute case review when you visit. She will spend time with you and learn how you feel, what symptoms you may have and talk to you about options, solutions and education. She offers many classes in her office that are geared towards healthy living and lifestyle changes.

When Joanne is not in her office, she is busy with her family. She has two daughters and 2 granddaughters. Her youngest daughter is set to graduate from Umatilla High School in 2015. Her oldest daughter, along with her husband and 2 daughters are happily living on a farm in Lady Lake. They provide livestock and produce to many of the local markets around the county. Joanne and her husband enjoy the many rewards of living healthy by maintaining primarily a Paleo diet. She has several patients that she has introduced to this eating lifestyle and has found great success in weight loss, increased energy levels and disease control without medication.

If you are looking for a medical provider that will spend the time with you to find the solution and that helps educate you on positive changes, Joanne Keller is the one to see. She currently accepts most insurance plans and offers other payment solutions. Call her office today for an appointment and see how she can help you feel and look better! She is open Monday thru Friday 8-5; schedule your appointment today 352-385-2631.
