HISTORY & ADMINISTRATION OF THE PROGRAM

Established in 1946 by then-Senator William Fulbright

Sponsored by the Department of State’s Bureau of

Educational and Cultural Affairs

Administered by the non-profit Institute of

International Education (IIE), specifically its scholar

division, The Council for International Exchange of

Scholars (CIES)

CIES works with US Embassies and binational

Fulbright Commissions to administer the program

FULBRIGHT BY THE NUMBERS

Operates in 155 countries

~7500 grants awarded annually

~ 800 annual awards in the “core”

program

Roughly 90% of Fulbright awardees

SUMMARY OF FULBRIGHT PROGRAMS

Core Fulbright Scholars Program (aka “traditional program”)

Distinguished Chairs Program - ~ 40 of the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Candidates should have a significant publication and teaching record.

Specialists Program (2-6 week projects such as teacher training, specialist workshops)

New Century of Scholars – 30 top academics and professional collaborate on a topic of global significance

IEA – International Educational Administrators program (in Germany, India, Japan and Korea)

German Studies

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS (UNLESS SPECIFIC EXCEPTIONS ARE NOTED IN AWARD DESCRIPTION)

U.S. citizenship at the time of application. Permanent resident status is not sufficient.

A Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree (including a master's depending on the field) as appropriate at the time of application.

College or university teaching experience at the level and in the field of the proposed lecturing activity as specified in the award description at the time of application.

Foreign language proficiency as specified in the award description or as required for the completion of the proposed project. (Note: Except in certain world areas and countries, lecturing is in English.)

Sound physical and mental health

ELEMENTS TO A RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Application Form

Project Statement (3-5 single-spaced pages)

CV (up to 6 pages)

Bibliography (up to 3 pages)

REVIEW CRITERIA FOR RESEARCH PROPOSALS

Merits of the proposal

Research design and methodology

Feasibility in terms of resources and amount of time allocated to the project

Significance to the applicant's field and professional development

Significance to the interests and needs of the host country

Need for residence in host country to accomplish the project

Evidence of host institution interest and affiliation, if indicated in award description

TIMELINE

Generally Fulbright has an early August

deadline for an award that would begin 9

to 12 months later

Applicants are notified of the review

committee's recommendations between

October and January. Candidates are notified

of final selection between January and June.

A NOTE ON COMPETITIVENESS

You will be competing against others who apply for the same award (You will not necessarily be competing directly against other CC faculty)

“All Disciplines” awards – you compete against others in a variety of disciplines (Best /most compelling proposals win)

They seek to issue awards to a variety of institutions and to recipients in all 50 states
