Nods & Nudges for ContestantsAs the rodeo season is now upon us, it is a great time to bring up a couple of

reminders and guidelines for new and seasoned members to follow.

Paying your fees BEFORE you compete:It states in the rule book that all fees must be paid before a contestant competes.

Please make sure to get your fees paid in a timely manner when you are at the rodeo.

Page 4: The Cowboy

page 4 • mrca June 2012 • The Cowboy

Approvals Continued From Page 3Declaring yourself if you are fowled:

It happens to the best of us. The chute getscracked before you nod, the barrier rope swingsaround and grabs your loop out of your hand,or you get rubbed off at the gate on the wayout to make your Roughstock ride. Declaring

yourself to the judge is a contestants’ responsibility, and must be done immediately

when the fowl is incurred.

If you are fowled, you cannot chase your calfdown the arena, or try and stay on for 8 andthen decided you have been wronged. Makesure to clearly stop your run or ride, and head

over to one of the 2 judges to declare.

Crocus Cowhorse Association Larry Clifford (204) 763-8911 • www.crocuscowhorse.blogspot.com

With the show season upon us, several of our members prepared by taking a Ranch Cut-ting clinic, hosted by CCHA for MCHA. We were very fortunate to receive instruction froma volunteer from MCHA who was very knowledgeable. We appreciated his patience and hisability to teach in a direct, simple way. The first day we worked on dry work and on the flag.Day two was on cattle. We had to cut on foot (!), learn the roles of the herd helpers and,of course, cut! The time went quickly and we learned a lot. Thank you MCHA! Part of theproceeds went back to MCHA to buy a saddle for a year end high point award for RanchCutting. If you want to know how to win it, check out their website!

CCHA is also providing some new incentives to come to our shows! First, there will beadded prize money at the Michie Quarter Horse, Challanchuck Acres and CCHA Finals shows. There will be a trophy buckle for high point Versatility in each class at the Finals show. Thisshow is required to be eligible for year end awards. At year end, there will be an award forthe high point Versatility winner in each class, as well as an award for high point Reining,Cutting, and Working Cow Horse in each class. Except for the Versatility award, a com-petitor doesn't need to show in all three events to be eligible for an award.

This is going to be an exciting season for CCHA, so be sure to get your membership in!Entries for shows must be received via email the Tuesday before each show. Formembership and entry forms, as well as more information about our rules, go to:http://www.crocuscowhorse.blogspot.ca/. Don't forget to check us out on FaceBook, too! See you at the shows!

The Manitoba High School Rodeo Association (MHSRA)is among the groups promoting the 'Build a Cowboy'program, which is geared to newcomers to the sport ofrodeo, who have an interest in becoming a rough stockcowboy - bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding.

Male students interested in becoming an eight-secondcowboy had their opportunity to gain instruction andpractice at the Elkhorn Riding Adventure arena at Onanoleover February and March.

Starting out on a Little Bucky machine, the students got afeel for what it's like to sit on the back of a slippery rawhidesurface. In encouraging more participation in rodeo roughstock events, participants in the program learn aspects ofriding and how an animal will react.

The MHSRA's Little Bucky machine - valued at $1,500 -was made possible through the sponsorship of Brent andGinny Collins of Arden, and Wim and Peggy Van Meijl

of Minnedosa.

Creating a bucking motion with downward pressure on asteel handle, the man-made machine gives youth a warm-upbefore they settle down in a steel chute aboard a breathing, bucking animal. For the most part, the young cowboys havesome rodeo experience, but may be looking at a rough stockevent as a new avenue to play cowboy.

Clinicians at the sessions included Gord Adams and his sonColin, a bareback rider and MHSRA alumni from Deloraine,Kevin Larsen of Inglis, Dallas Lockhart of Brandon, WayneRowe of Goodlands, Ward Cutler of Virden, and KellyMillward of Garland.

Participants included determined youth from a number ofManitoba and Saskatchewan communities.

It's the goal of the MHSRA to see additional numbers at therough stock end of the arena in future years, thanks to theBuild a Cowboy program. Membership numbers in the timedevents are strong, but that doesn't hold true from a roughstock perspective at this time.

Throughout its early history, the MHSRA has had thepresence of a strong group of bareback, saddle bronc andbull riders whose grit and determination are both inspiringand entertaining. The majority of these members were fromthe high school division, as the junior high program has onlybeen around since 2004.

By bringing forth the 'Build a Cowboy' program, the MHSRAis aiming to improve upon rough stock numbers by keepingthe younger students interested and growing into talentedhigh school rodeo athletes. Bareback riders are beingdeemed as an endangered species, with a mere five percentof the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA)members competing in bareback - a wild eight-second rideon a bucking horse, without a saddle, reins or stirrups!

"With membership down this year at the chute end of therodeo, we are using the A (stronger) and B side bulls to keepthe younger boys in the event," said Art Cochrane, theMHSRA National Director and the current NHSRA president."The Build a Cowboy program is truly beneficial as it toucheson all aspects of the event or events, the youth may beinterested in.”
