The “CREATIVE PATTERN-MAKING” OPTION
The “creative pattern-maker” is a much sought-after classification in the “design office” realm as well as in the workshops of many fashion houses. The creative pattern-maker will interact between the departments concerned in a company thanks to his/her technical skills and capacity of comprehension and participation in the creative approach of the studio:
Studying and interpreting drafts and sketches
Applying volume to the dummy in muslin or fabric
Fittings of the mock-up on the dummy or live model
Preparing test samples and material finishes
Presenting the mock-up to the designer
Honing the mock-up
Adapting the pattern base for different materials (fabric, fur, leather and knit…)
Explaining a piece of work and assisting workshop staff on a technical level After several years of professional experience, this pattern-maker could move towards the organisation of the various professions that a “design office” or workshop is composed of and the transmission of information to the various sub-contractors outside the company. This type of pattern-maker will know how to interpret the inspirations and iconographic research of a collection and could legitimately position him/herself in the role of the liaising spokesperson between technical and creative departments.
PROGRAMME The aim is to reinforce the future pattern-maker’s capacity for creative propositions, develop his/her “fashion” eye and train the students for interaction between the “studio” and the “workshop” (understanding the demand and doubts of the designer and also the language of a creative spirit, proposing volume in a relevant way, fabrics, studying details and finishes…).
