Anne Boden CEOStarling Bank
Anne Boden’s speech was inspirational in discussing Starling Bank’s journey in becoming a disruptive mobile-only bank that is transforming the financial and banking industry. She discussed her 30 years of experience from a Computer Science Graduate to working for big corporate banks and how she consistently heard the same narrative of problems that banks were facing:
Anne spent a year working in FinTech and then went back to Ireland (her hometown) to further investigate the problems banks were facing.
Anne concluded that “customers are very intelligent and know which services to be involved with” which made her want to open her own bank.
She went from nothing to gain £48million investment for Starling Bank.
1) Banks want everything to go digital
2) Transactions need to be faster and more accessible

Top tips for line managers to initiate a diversity programme:
What problems do you think businesses will face if they don’t take diversity seriously?
“Your colleagues will be fearful and not bring their full potential to their role. A diverse work environment will allow your team to bounce off new ideas and new experiences with one another. It’s a cultural shift that’s very important”.
Dora Michail
Tips for professionals in creating a diverse work environment:
1. Don’t make it HR’s problem - If you want a diversity programme to be put in place bring in all your resources and research on why it’s crucial for your team to take it seriously
2. Get business sponsorships - get senior managers and CEO’s invested into the diversity programme. The more support you have the easier it will be, especially when money is involved.
1. Aware of what your own company’s diversity policy is2. A balance in your organisation of genders/experiences/cultures3. Keep pushing for new approaches to innovation & diversity
