“THE ENGLISH FEAR ”Act 1 scene 1

The stage opens; a boy (shiv) comes in his home, filled with sadness and

speaks to himself.

Shiv :-( speaking in Hindi) my God, my result in my 12th examination isgood, English is my problem, I did bad in the examination; look at me,(pause and takes a look at himself) I want to go to college; I wish I amlike my friend (he calls a name) he attained a very good tenth, how do Ido in college, I don’t want papa to take me to a school where I will speak

Hindi, papa said that he will enrol in a college, but how do I understandwhat is thought in the class, I wish he can take me to a very good college,

I wonder the school he will take me to , uncle yesterday said lovely

professional university is a good school; I he takes me there so that I canlearn how to speak English.

(As he talks to himself; he father comes in standing at his back

looking at his son and shakes his head)

Father :- (Also speaking in Hindi) son, what is your problem? You tohave be happy because I met your uncle yesterday and he said that I

should send you to lovely college because is the best school; so today I’llbe going to the college with you my dear; both of us don’t know how to

speak English so I want so I want you to go learn the language. After your graduation; you will be going to the USA.

(The boy shouts for joy and hug his father and

Then calls her mother)

Shiv: - mama x3;

(Mother comes into the stage)

Mother: - what is the problem? Why did you call me?

Father: - he is happy because he is going into college of lovely.

Mother : - (Filled with sadness) but you know that you can’t speak

English……..

Shiv : -(knees before the mother) Mama (X3); I’ll make you happy, youwill be proud of me, I promise you.

Mother : -( prays for her son and gives him her blessing)



Father : -(to the wife) please woman go and get me my breakfast, I wantto meet my brother before he goes out let me get dressed.

Mother: - ok.

(the father goes out of the stage)

Mother: - please shiv join me in the kitchen so that you take the breakfast

to you papa.

(The boy and the mother move to the kitchen and the stage gets

dark);

Fade out!!!

Act 1 scene 2

The stage opens in class where all the students are sitting and the

teacher enters the class; shiv was talking with somebody who is he is

his friend.

shiv:(in hindi) how are you?

Friend: am fine and you? (As he want to say a word, the teacher

comes into the class).

1st

Teacher: - sit (Everyone sits but shiv was still standing, until theteacher asks him again to sit down; but he never hears, then she asks

him why you are standing, then a friend speaks on his behalf).

His friend: Ma’am, he does not understand English; (Then speaks to

him in Hindi to sit then he sits).

1st Teacher:- oh! Sorry... (Speaks in Hindi) you are in the best

university, that is ok; we are going to study MTH 157.

(She writes on the white board until the lesson was over then she goesout, here comes the second teacher).

2nd teacher: (Writes ENG 013 on the board, she is speaking on verbs;

as shiv sits on the front sit, she asks him a question) what is a verb?

Shiv: (His friend whispers to his ear; he stands and cannot say

anything)

2nd teacher: I said what is a verb?

(His friend speaks again in hindi)



Friend: ma’am, he doesn’t speak English.

2nd teacher: (Continues her teaching until the class was over, she asks

shiv his name using Hindi, he tells her); follow me (he follows her), Idon’t mean to make you uncomfortable, see me in my cabin later.

Shiv :(nods his head, as both of them are walking together, stage

fades out

Act 2 scene 1

Stage opens in a class where shiv is with his friend and they are

studying, and then comes Alex.

Alex: (to both of them) hey bro what’s up? (Shakes both of them, both

say fine) you are studying? What are studying?

Friend: English, shiv can not speak so I wanna teach him bro.

Alex: ok bro, just I wanna get my book I forgot, see you later.

Friend: ok bro no probs men… see ya. Bye. (Alex says bye, then he

turns to shiv, in hindi, lets go so that we can sleep and have a rest, we

do the study at night, and shiv agrees, then both leave, stage getsdark).

Fade out!!!

Act 2 scene 2

The stage opens when shiv and his friend are having little arguments

at the door because shiv is discouraged on how the teacher spoke tohim the last time.

Friend: (speaking in Hindi) lets go in.

Shiv: (speaking in Hindi). No please, I felt bad the last time, and I do notunderstand anything in the class.

Friend: I know but we learn when we are in this condition man, you were

been corrected, shiv we learn from our mistakes, you have to becourageous, and you have to fight your fear. Common lets go the class

will soon be over. (As both go, the teacher allows them inside the class,



and then the class gets over, everyone leaves the class, the teacher

class shiv).

2nd teacher :( Speaking in Hindi); my dear you don’t have be scared, I

had a talk with the HOD and he said we have to arrange an extra class for you, we have been doing it for our students.

Shiv: (filled with joy) thanks ma’am, (the teacher leaves and shiv was

there thanking God), I am so happy, I thank you god that my problemswill be solved now. (As he is talking, his friend comes ask him what is

the problem, and he tells him)

Friend: let’s go (both of them leave the stage).

Fade out!!!

Act 3 scene 1.

The stage opens in into class; the teacher comes in start teaching c++.

3rd teacher: we are going to learn inheritance, and starts telling theconcept of inheritance.

(Then the class gets over, and another teacher comes into the class);

2nd

teacher :( Speaks to someone on the front sit), please give me your copy.(she opens a page and tell them to open and she calls shiv to

read)

Shiv: (reading).

2nd teacher: (tells him to stop). Shiv is reading well now because he isattaining a special class for 4 weeks now, he has improved in everything,

even in speaking. Well that is it let go for the subject of the day. (Class

gets over; shiv goes out of the class with his friend meets the teacher

and thanks her for all her efforts towards his growth)

Act 3 scene 2

The stage opens in the class where everyone was discussing for their

final examination,

Shiv: (Speaking in English), Alex, how will our examination be?



Alex: I don’t know dude. We gonna write it, men… that is not theproblem, the problem is what is your plan after graduation?

Shiv: will be going to the USA to meet my Uncle, I’ll miss you bro….

You made me to over come my fear in English. I can speak and right wellnow, I don’t know how to thank you…I …I....

Alex: (Intercepts him)…is ok bro, it shows your determination and you

courage. We have to do it, and the college we are is so good for itsinhabitation, we are friends and we have to do it. Am hungry let getsomething to eat. (Both go to get something to eat)

Stages gets fade out!!

Act 4 scene 1

The stage opens at home where shiv phone rings and he receives call

from his friend telling that the result is out, then he calls his father..

Shiv: (calling) papa…papa..(Yes, the father answers, comes into the

stage).

Father: what is it son?

Shiv: my university result is out and I need money to go to the cafe tocheck.

Father: go into my room and check in the pants on the door, you will seeRs 100, take it.

(Runs to the room and leaves the stage, then the father stays and

sleep there, within 10 mins, he comes , shouting his fathers name with

joy, his father wakes)

Father: what is it my son?

Shiv: I did well in my examination, I got first class… and I’ll be the oneto give speech during our convocation. Papa am so happy, mama shouldcome and see that I promised her that I’ll make her proud and I have done

it papa, I thank you papa, my friends and lovely teachers that has mademe get to this level am so happy, my soul rejoice ( the father tells him

that he is coming, he leaves then his cell phone rings again, he says

wait am coming and he leaves the stage).



Act 4 scene 2.

Three weeks later, they where at the university auditorium and shiv

was ask to give speech by the HOD as he is the best student of the

class. Then shiv comes to the podium.

Shiv: my follow students, am so happy to be given these privileges by theuniversity to stand before you. Lovely university had improved my life

and everything about me. I was nobody until when I came here(to theuniversity) but now am somebody, please be determined and courageous,don’t let any thing or any one be an obstruction to you. I want to thank all

my friends and my teachers for all they hard work toward me.. I have tofight my fear my close friend told me, please fight your fears, and don’t

run away from your obligations, I will call this ENG-fear because it was

my biggest foe, but today I have over come the fear of it.( as he is saying,the audience stands up and claps for him, and then balloons where

thrown into the air, then that ends the story)
