I started at re:form three years ago, when I was 57. Up until that point

I had mostly walked for exercise and I had never even been on the bike. Today

I am strong and full of energy...which I get to use with my grandchildren. It ’s

made such a big difference in my life! – Fereshteh Yahyapour : La Cost

Exercise had always been an integral part of my life but somehow on the

journey, I lost it. re:form not only helped me find it back but has challenged

me in ways I never knew were possible. – Shawna Esarey : San Elijo Hills

Four Words…I Love re:form fitness. I have always been an active person and I

have tried lots of avenues to up my level of fitness from traditional gym

memberships, to one-on-one personal training, to large group classes and

“boot camps”, and nothing compares. – Whitney Fields : Carlsbad

My goal was to lose weight, maybe even fit into a smaller jean size. Initially,

I started working out several times a week and every week the scale would go

down and the muscles grew. It was amazing to see my body change.

– Susan : San Elijo Hills

After a year of physical therapy with minimal results to address my loss of

muscle mass and lower back problems. It ’s been seven months and I can truly

say that re:form has changed my life. I not only lost 11% of my body fat, I can

now actually pick up my daughter without the fear of hurting my back now

that my core strength is so much better. – Cindy Davis : San Elijo Hills

re:form is not just the name it is what they do. My body is becoming the body I

always wanted but did not know how to get. I am mid 40’s and have no prob-

lem jumping into any activity. Best workout, never the same, results are off the

charts! – James Reeve : San Elijo Hills

Do you remember Mr. Roger’s - that PBS show from years ago? He used to sing his neighborhood song as he tied his shoes - “Would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won’t you be my neighbor.”

When we started The Fountain over seven years ago, Tim and I (next door neighbors here in San Elijo Hills) believed that the most important thing we could do to help build a strong sense of community here in San Elijo Hills was to help people connect to their neighbors and to local resources. That’s what makes a com-munity tight-knit -- knowing your neighbors and utilizing their exper-tise and services.

Our community is absolutely filled with unique resources and valuable assets. Think about the neighbors you have...who are they? What do they do? There are so many dif-ferent professions, home-based businesses, and valuable services....all right here in our backyard. You can find just about anything you need right here through a neighbor, but if you don’t know about them - how can you support them, right?

I love meeting my neighbors. Every month I have the opportunity to meet and get to know a wide variety of people. They each have their own talents and skills and when something comes up and you need something - it’s so great to be able to call upon someone you know.

I hope you’re using neighbors for the things you need.

editor’s cornerkAren SmiTH

Be MineIt’s such an important part of creating this special cul-ture in San Elijo Hills - that ‘sense of community’ that we can’t quite put our finger on, but that is very unique to our neighborhood. It’s not something that happens naturally in this day and time. We really have to make an effort to keep that ‘small town living’ a priority.

One of the best things we can do is incorporate the town square businesses

into our regular routines. Buy a gift certificate at French Nails Salon, stop into Postal Annex to grab a quick gift, drop off your drycleaning at Windmill, meet a friend for lunch at Peppertree Hills Cafe, book your

next dentist appointment at The Hills Family Dentistry, or make a family night

out with dinner at Hendo’s, a project at A Colorful Universe, and dessert at Yogurt

Utopia. Better yet - have friends in the neighborhood join you!

Stop for a moment and think a little bit about the people you know here in San Elijo Hills and the services you need. How can you support a neighbor? How can they support you?

Really stop and look at your habits and routines. Are you spending more time driving out of the com-munity or walking inside of the community? If you get creative, you will be surprised how much you can accomplish right here.

Mardi gras in san elijo hills!

The San Elijo Hills Community Association Special Events Committee has been busy planning and introducing some new ideas to the event calendar. Don’t miss the first ever Mardi Gras Masquerade. The party will be on Friday, March 4 from 7 to 10 pm at the PepperTree Hills Cafe. This special adult-only event will be a fun night of delicious hors d’oeuvres, drinks, music and danc-ing. Space is limited, so please RSVP by February 18 by sending an email with your name and San Elijo home address to Kimberly Perez at kperez@waltersmanagement or call (760) 798-9015. This event is for San Elijo Hills residents 21 and over only. If you need childcare, check out the City of San Marcos’ Fun Friday Nites event on page 8. If you plan ahead, you can arrange to drop off the kids there and walk on over to the cafe for a great night out right in the neighborhood!

Don’t miss this fun event coordinated by Magali Wright, a resident here in San Elijo Hills. The 1st Annual San Diego Canine Cancer Walk will take place on February 19 at Walnut Grove Park (1950 Sycamore Dr.). Walk with or without a dog on a short 1-mile trail walk. After the walk, visit ven-dors, exhibits and listen to experts discuss cancer prevention, wellness, cancer research and treatment. Learn how to be an advocate for your dog’s health.

All attending walkers will receive prize drawing tickets, a bandana for their dog and an awareness band. The drawings will be held after the walk.

The Early Registration fee is $30 for adults; Walk day registration is $35. Registration for a Child (10-17 years) is $15 and children 9 and under are free.

Walk registration and check in begins at 9 am and the Walk begins at 10 am. 100% of walk regis-trations and donations go to benefit Morris Animal Foundation’s Canine Cancer Campaign to fund research for canine cancer. Can’t attend? Register as a virtual walker on the website. For more informa-tion and to register, visit www.CanineK.org.

clubs & eVentsIf you missed the San Elijo Hills 5K last month, you missed a fun

morning. About 250 runners made their way through the challenging course -- everyone from the experienced runner to the beginner. There were runners and walkers of all ages, including those being pushed along in strollers. It was great to see families come across the finish line together, cheering each other along the way. All proceeds from this event benefit The Academy at San Elijo, San Elijo Elementary and San Elijo Middle School. A special thank you to everyone who participated!

buy local - Join the campaign!

The community is coming together to help San elijo Hills establish a strong “buy local” culture. Spearheaded by the San elijo Hills Foundation, next month (march), you are going to begin hearing the words ‘buy local’ throughout San elijo Hills.

Supporting local businesses is absolutely essential to not only our local economy and envi-ronment, but also to our home values and our overall quality of life. We were all drawn to this community for the small town feel and the strong sense of com-munity. it’s truly one of the dis-tinguishing characteristics of our neighborhood. We hope you’ll jump on board and get serious about finding ways to make ‘buy local’ a way of life for you and your family in San elijo Hills.

Save the date of march 13 (10:30 am - 1:30 pm) for a special Sidewalk Sunday event in the Town Square that will celebrate San elijo businesses with special family activities and discounts for shopping & dining.

Get ready to take part in a community-wide effort to build on this culture of knowing your neighbors and supporting the local businesses and organiza-tions that serve our community. San Elijo AYSO

by Chris Fitzsimmons, Founder & Director

Happy New Year from San Elijo AYSO!!San Elijo AYSO Region 1505 would like to extend a Happy New Year

greeting to the San Elijo Hills community and surrounding areas. We sincerely hope that all have a healthy and prosperous 2011. Region 1505 is extremely grateful for your support during our most recent fall season. We strive to bring you a quality soccer program year after year; adding new features as the Region grows. The number of participants in our Region continues to grow every year and this past season was no different.

2010 Fall Season – A look back

During the 2010 Fall Season we had over 630 players on 75 teams playing every Saturday on the fields here in the community. In addition to the players, we had an ‘army’ of volunteers as coaches, referees, field liners, team parents and board members all committed to bringing a superb soccer experience to the youth of our community. Five teams participated in the Area 11-R playoffs facing teams from other Regions in the Area. We had 4 All-Star teams that participated in the Area 11-R All-Star tournament in January at Walnut Grove Park in San Marcos. In addition to the success of our core program, AYSO Matrix club soccer was added to Region 1505. A Boys U10 and Girls U11 team were formed and competed in the Presidio Soccer league. AYSO Matrix-San Elijo and the two teams both enjoyed a successful inaugural year. As we move in to 2011, AYSO Region 1505 is looking to add more opportunities for the youth of our community to enjoy the game of soccer at an affordable price.

AYSo Spring Soccer Season

Region 1505 will be introducing a Spring Soccer season. The season will start in late March and end in May. The registration fees for the season will be $30. The season will consist of 8-10 games; there will be no prac-tices. Details on the season and registration are available on our website (www.sanelijoayso.org).

AYSo matrix-San elijo

For the 2011 season, Region 1505 will field a Boys U11 team and Girls U12 team. The evalua-tions for these teams will take place on Hill Top field, February 16. The Boys U11 evaluations will start with check-in at 4:30pm and the Girls U12 check-in will start at 6 pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

Soccer Camps and Development Programs

Several development programs and camps will be hosted by Region 1505 this spring. Mike Hovenic, Director of Coaching for AYSO Matrix and Director/Owner of Mike Hovenic Soccer Camps, will be providing the following camps and development clinics.

• “Hovenic Ultimate Soccer Player Development” - Clinics to develop a player’s basic soccer skills; suitable for all players.

• “Hovenic Soccer Camp – Spring Break” – Mike’s traditional soccer camp, now offered during spring break.

For more information on any of these development programs, email Mike Hovenic at [email protected].

2011 Fall Season: 7th Anniversary Season

Planning has already begun for the 2011 Fall Season, our 7th Anniversary. We expect this to our biggest and best season yet! Look for registration to open in late March and check out the “early-bird” registration fee!! If you are interested in volunteering to help for the 2011 season, please email us at [email protected] and we can discuss the opportunities. Stay in touch with all that is happening in AYSO Region 1505; join our email list by sending an email to [email protected].

The Academy League will place a strong emphasis on the overall development of both the individual youth soccer player as well as the team dynamic. CHriS orlAnDo: CiTY CounCil Here we go again. The State of California is yet again tak-ing aim at local funds as a way to balance its budget. Governor Brown’s budget plan, which he submitted in January, includes a proposal to eliminate local rede-velopment agencies and redirect those resources to Sacramento to close the state’s looming budget gap.

This proposal, which is being called unconstitutional and a clear violation of the voters’ desire to protect local resources, is a major threat to San Marcos because redevelopment funds a significant portion of the City’s infrastruc-ture improvements. While the Council has taken steps to protect its funds, the Governor’s proposal could have a serious negative effective on the City’s ability to build roads, parks and other infrastructure.

Local jurisdictions form redevelopment agencies to help fund infra-structure improvements, new schools, and housing projects in areas that need economic development. Forming a redevelop area allows a local juris-diction to retain a larger portion of its property taxes, rather than sending those funds to the state. The projects sponsored by redevelopment agencies account for more than 300,000 jobs and $2 billion in revenues. According to the League of California Cities, redevelopment is the single largest job creator in the state.

The Governor’s proposal came as a part of his plan to close a more than $25 billion hole in the state’s budget. By eliminating redevelopment agen-cies, the Governor hopes to redirect the revenues that the agencies generate to the state to help fill the gaps in the state’s budget. The proposal comes despite overwhelming voter approval in the November election of a con-

Governor Takes Aim at City Coffersstitutional amendment to prohibit the state from taking or borrowing local funds used for transportation, redevelopment, and local government projects and services.

For San Marcos, this proposal could have a very serious negative effect. Much of the City’s infrastructure improvements are funded through the City’s redevelopment agency. If this proposal where to be ratified, projects such as the Creek District, South Lake Park, traffic and other improvements would be delayed. Last year, in a similar grab, the state took more than $20 million from San Marcos. The loss of those funds has caused the City to reprioritize and scale its capital improvement plans. Another grab would be a serious blow to the City’s future.

In the days that followed the announcement of the Governor’s proposal, the City Council took action to protect a large portion of its funds by autho-rizing the City Manager to issue more than $40 million in bonds funded by revenues from the City’s redevelopment areas. By bonding against the revenues, the City hopes to prevent the state from taking those funds. Nonetheless, the elimination of the City’s redevelopment agencies would seriously restrict its ability to spur economic development, create jobs, fund schools, build needed infrastructure, and support its housing needs.

It is unclear at this point how much support the Governor’s proposal to eliminate redevelopment agencies will garner. Elected officials, policymakers and others around the state have already come out in strong opposition to the proposal. However, given the size of the budget deficit in Sacramento, even a proposal that generates such opposition could gain passage as the state runs out of options for a solution to its budget mess.

people in your neighborhood

Kathy Smith moved to San Elijo Hills in July of 2010 to start a new era in life. (At our house, Kathy is ‘Aunt Kathy’ or ‘Sis’, as she is my sister-in-law.) After visiting us here in San Elijo Hills for 10 years, having her right up the street is pretty handy! Kathy’s dad (Grandpa) also recently moved to the area and we’re all enjoying the convenience of this new proximity.

Kathy grew up in the Ventura area where she lived most of her life. Kathy is a Speech-Language Pathologist. Most of her career has been spent in the school system as a speech therapist working with students with special needs such as autism, deafness, learning disabilities, stuttering, and speech/language disorders. Kathy is currently working as a speech therapist in Oceanside. She recently received her administrative credentials and is keeping her eye out for an administrative position in edu-cation (Director of Special Education, Program Specialist or Principal). If you have any leads, let her know! Kathy is also a considering reestablishing her private practice here in the neighborhood.

Kathy is never far from her dog, Baxter, a Bichon who is trained as a

therapy dog. He spends a lot of time at school providing therapy for her students. He is also a great source of therapy to the elderly when Kathy volunteers at nursing facilities.

When Kathy is not working, she enjoys reading, spending time with friends and fam-ily, long walks on the beach, traveling to exotic places and shopping. She recently took up golf. In fact, her first game was the Cedar Crossing Turkey Classic here in San Elijo Hills in November. If you haven’t heard of the Turkey Classic, it’s the infamous neighborhood golf tournament where the person with the high-

est score wins! Kathy took home the coveted “Green Jacket” and trophy for her high three-digit score. (Needless to say, she will be busy this year working on her game!)

It’s a new year in a new neighborhood for Kathy! As a life-long learner, Kathy is looking forward to a great year of exercise, healthy food, and new starts. Next time you see her out and about in the neighborhood, whether at The Hills Family Dentistry, Postal Annex, or Yogurt Utopia, stop and say hello. And, if Baxter is with her, he’ll expect a hello, too. He’s great with kids and is sure to bring a smile to your face.

SEES Students SOAR Through MathPoinTS From A PrinCiPAl – lYnDA mCDonell

There are several key components to a solid foundation in mathematics at the elementary school level. One of these is the consistent and automatic knowledge of the basic facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. By the time a child enters fourth grade, the concep-tual understanding of all four operations should be in place. Considerable class time is spent in the early grades to teach addition/subtraction and multiplication/

division relationships. Then it is up to the child and his/her family to ensure the facts are memorized.

Each year we hear from middle school teachers how important know-ing basic facts are to success in middle school. When a child has to rely on

charts, fingers, scratch paper, etc. to compute, it is difficult to learn and apply new math concepts. Developing an understanding of long division, fraction, decimal and percent relationships, geometry and algebra are all impacted by this deficiency.

San Elijo Elementary School provides incentives for students in grades 1-5 to learn their basic facts to automaticity. The program, Soaring through Math, assesses the students on a regular basis to determine the consistency and level of their memorization of the four operations. Students progress through the levels within their grade and eventually Land in the Eagle’s Nest. Once a trimester these students are recognized at a flag salute cer-emony and receive a math charm for their Friday necklace.

Memorizing basic facts can be a family event. Math games, songs and web games are great resources to use to practice the facts. Your child’s teacher can make recommendations as well. Be sure to ask your child to set a goal to become a SOARing Through Math Eagle.

Father/Daughter Dance

The annual Father/Daughter dance will be held on Friday, February 25. The theme for this year’s dance is Dancing with the Stars. Get out your dancing shoes and come and join the fun.

Spring Scholastic book Fair

The spring book fair will be held the week of March 7-11. Be sure to stop by and browse for both the children’s and adult literature and nonfic-tion selections.

The Master Schedule The Process of Scheduling Students into Classes

PoinTS From A PrinCiPAl – DouGlAS HAll

Few people realize the amount of thought and consideration that goes into placing students into classes at school. Each year every effort is made to maximize opportunities for student success by looking at many variables that can affect a student’s educational placement. Many parents might feel more comfortable by knowing the process for placing students into classes. This month I will share how this critical task is completed.

The Administrative Team including the Principal, Counselors, Registrars, and Department Chairs or whoever is in charge of the schedul-ing - begins to build a master schedule starting with factors which are the most restrictive. For example, class size, special education requirements, specific elective courses or course offerings limited to a specific period or time of the day. A full master schedule is then built around these limitations as well the requirements and regulations from No Child Left Behind and the California Commission on Teacher Teaching Credentialing.

Typically, it is a good idea to mix students from one year to another so they will have the opportunity to be in learning situations with a variety of classmates. Parent requests for teachers and classes are always considered, though it is not always possible to honor every request due to the many factors that go into assigning students to classes. Usually principals try to honor requests or explain why some may not be in the best interest of the student.

Generally, parents are supportive of the scheduling process and sup-portive of decisions that are made when the see the complexity and BIG picture that is required to so this annual process. Regardless of whether a request can be honored or not, your school does want to know and try to meet the needs of your student as they complete the scheduling task every year. The key is to communicate as early as possible in the process with the counseling or administrative team so they can be aware of any unique needs your student may have.

Factors that are considered when placing student into classes are the ratio of boys to girls in each class, cultural diversity, and academic ability. Students are scheduled using a technology program following key param-eters determined ahead of time by the master schedule team. Students are scheduled using multiple criteria and teachers’ recommendations are given consideration as well. Some students bring out the best in their classmates, while the opposite may be true for other students. Students who have spent

all year agitating each other in class are likely to be separated. Teachers are also key in the process and make valuable recommendations with regard to specific courses in which the student would most likely benefit and suc-ceed.

When a student is receiving special education services, we want you to know that he or she is in good hands. In order to make appropriate place-ment, it is always very helpful if the school is notified about specific services the student requires including any health concerns. The faculty has profes-sionally trained members who are knowledgeable in students’ specific areas of need.

If parents or guardians have a special concern about what class or teacher their student will be assigned to, it is important that they contact the princi-pal or school counselor and share their concerns as early as possible into the annual process. These considerations can best be addressed before the final schedule is completed, since it is much more difficult to make changes once students are placed in classes or the new school year has started.

Assigning students to appropriate classes is a high priority in our schools. We collect all the pieces of information from individual students, parents, and teachers in order to make the most beneficial and fair decisions when assigning students to classes. Teachers are also asked to complete recommendations containing valuable information based on academic per-formance, social skills, and the unique needs of the school and its student population needs.

At the secondary level, students are generally given more opportuni-ties to select elective courses that they would like to take in addition to the required core classes. At the middle school and high school level, they can be assigned up to six or seven different teachers, which makes the schedul-ing more complex. The goal behind a well-thought-out plan for a master schedule is always based on students and maximizing student success. When students succeed, we have achieved our goal. The master schedule process, however, is a dynamic ever changing series of steps that is required to achieve the best possible schedule every year. That’s why our school takes this task seriously and strives to do the best possible job in meeting the needs of our students and staff alike. As always the key is having positive home-school communication and a team effort to accomplish this annual task.

Students Tackle Topic of Cyberbullying

On January 6, San Elijo Middle School students and staff saw the first of the Cyber-bullying/Drug Dog spots on SEMS TV. Gary DeBora, SEMS assistant principal, introduced the short clip about the Interquest program, by sharing with students that the goal of the school and the School Board was to keep students safe. Jasper, the beautiful golden retriever trained to sniff out unacceptable items at schools, and his trainer, Christine, will be visiting the school sometime in the near future. Students were reminded what they should and should not bring to school and were encouraged to ask administrators and counselors if they had any questions. Parents had been invited to an Interquest presentation at Mission Hills High School a few months ago, as well. The presentation is just one facet of the pro-active approach the school’s administration is taking to educate its students and staff about cyber-bullying and drug dangers that seem to be a part of the technological advancements and fast-paced world we all live in. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Hall, Mr. DeBora or Mrs. Kim.

Geography bee

SEMS students held their breath while their classmates, who were finalists in the National Geographic Geography Bee, com-peted for school champion. Thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Karen Warner and the History department, all students were given the chance to compete and then enter the finals. When it came down to the absolute finals, three students: Daniel Smalley, Alana Yee and Vibha Vijayakumar were asked challenging questions that narrowed the field to two students: Alana Yee and Vibha Vijayakumar. Finally after three really tough questions, Vibha came away the winner for the second year in a row. She competed in last year’s state competition and placed amongst the top 100 students. It was a fun way to learn more about the world we live in and to highlight the efforts of our Golden Eagle students who strive to be the best they can be.

Open Your Heart to a Lifelong Romance – With Your HealthWhen the month of February comes ‘round, it’s hard

to escape the hoopla surrounding Valentine’s Day, regardless of whether your family celebrates the occasion or not. But all this imagery of brightly-colored hearts and proclamations of love got me to thinking about how impor-tant it is we take care of our own bodies, hearts and minds. Given how fortunate we are to live in San Diego’s generally mild and sunny climate (the recent winter rains notwithstand-ing!), why not take the time to see what is available close to home in order to better your physical (and consequently) mental health. It’s the ultimate act of caring towards yourself and your family.

First off, have you recently been – or ever been, for that matter – to the farmer’s market, located just down the hill at California State University’s San Marcos campus? Every Wednesday from approximately 1 p.m. onwards, North County vendors set up in this small but vital and conveniently-locat-ed-to-our-community farmer’s market. It has an assortment of farm-direct produce sellers, both conventional and organic, local baked goods, honey and other various independent merchants that rotate on a more casual basis. We are very fortunate to have them nearby at all, since the winter season is financially not necessarily as profitable for the folks as the summer season is (apparently, they have closed for the winter in the past). The people at the market (and not just the sellers, but buyers as well, who can be overheard swapping soup and dip recipes with what’s available for sale that week) are enthusiastic about what they offer, and can give you tips on how to eat what you buy. The market is also an amazing resource for low-income households in the area that rely on government food assistance programs: there is an offer allowing participants to get $40 worth of market items for only $20 of assistance. Just go up to the friendly people who sit at the tent with the cash box (where there is never a line) and they’ll assist you – it’s like getting all your fresh groceries at 50 per cent off!

In spite of the chilly season, there is always a wonderful array of fresh produce that will pique the curiosity of the pickiest of eaters. On my last trip there, I found sweet-tasting purple carrots, fresh herbs, no less than four types of squashes, and a myriad of other healthy nature’s treats to eat. In fact, it was my first time buying organic dandelion greens – described as one of the most nutritious and holistic leafy vegetables you can find. Not only do they work in juicing as powerful cleansers that aid digestion, they have more vitamin A, vitamin K, calcium and iron than broccoli!

Juicing is, in fact, a great way to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your diet by whirling them into energy-boosting liquid form. It’s something our family is going to explore further this year. We’re looking at modifying our eating style to have heavier meals at breakfast and lunch, and dinner slightly before 6 p.m., which isn’t easy given the

long work commutes. Also a priority is to further examine the use of genetically-modified organisms in common pack-

aged foods and see how this impacts the products we purchase, from cooking oil to cereal. Things are changing quickly in the busi-

ness of food production, and there is a lot of information out there on what choices are ideal for a growing family. Many families feel the same need for education on this issue, and it’s worth noting that formulations for numerous mainstay products from our childhood have changed over the years. With the evolving nature of food allergies and sensitivities, it’s exciting to see, for example, all the different ways you can sweeten your cereal and coffee beyond refined sugar.

Of course, eating for optimal health is one part of the equation: exercis-ing for strength, endurance and ultimately, longevity, is the other. There are always new fitness trends that explore how to lose weight and gain muscle in innovative ways – my husband has finally seen the need to be serious about this as his slowing metabolism and desk job have inched the scale readings up over the years. Fortunately, right here in San Elijo Hills there are vari-ous ways to go about rectifying this. Some groups that gather to exercise cater to the parent with young stroller-bound tots, others to the cycling enthusiast. In every neighborhood there are couples, friends and residents who get together and hike our fabulous – and sometimes a bit tricky – trails. San Elijo Hills is also fortunate to have several physical trainers living and working amongst us, along with gym and dance facilities located nearby in the Melrose/La Costa business park. Whether you pay an expert to start whipping you into shape, or choose simply to power walk with companions, you can immediately start to take better care of yourself just by stepping out your front door.

So get serious and go local to enhance your body and mind. Making the commitment to live a healthier lifestyle is a gift that truly keeps on giving to every member of the family, and is an act of love to be treasured by all.

Each Valentine’s Day, Americans spend millions of dollars on candy and flowers. These are fine gifts, but

after the chocolates are eaten and the roses have wilted, Valentine’s Day will just be a pleasant memory. But if you want to give a present that can benefit your valentine for years to come, why not give a financial gift?

Here are a few creative ideas for doing just that:

Give shares of stock. Like everyone else, your valen-tine no doubt enjoys certain products or services. So why not give her or him shares of stock in the businesses that produce those goods and services? Your valentine will enjoy being an owner and may well use this newfound stock ownership to develop a greater interest in investing — and investing can help all of us work toward our financial goals. (Keep in mind that, if you are giving away shares of your own stock, you should take note of your original purchase price; this information will be needed for tax purposes should your gift recipient ever sell the shares.)

Contribute to an IRA. Does your valentine contribute to a traditional or Roth IRA? If so, he or she is making a wise move, because an IRA is one of the best tax-advantaged ways to save for retirement. Consequently, you’ll be doing your valentine a great service by helping him or her fund an IRA. (While you can’t directly invest in someone else’s IRA, you can write

that person a check for the same purpose.) For the 2010 and 2011 tax years, the IRA contribution limit is $5,000, or $6,000 for investors 50 and older. And contributions for 2010 can be made right up until the tax-filing deadline.

Make a charitable gift in your valentine’s name. Your valentine may well support certain charitable, educational or civic groups. By making a contribution to one or more of these groups, and designating the gift in your valentine’s name, you will be doing a good thing for your valentine, for the charity — and for yourself, too, because your gift may earn you some tax benefits. If you simply give cash, you can write off part of the value of your gift if it’s made

to tax-qualified charitable organization. And if you give an appreciated asset, such as stock, you’ll also avoid paying capital gains taxes, because when the stock is sold, it will be the charity, not you, taking the gain.

Make a debt payment. You might want to volunteer to pay your valen-tine’s car payment or credit card payment for a month, and then encourage your valentine to put the savings to work in an investment. The more debts any of us have, the less we have to invest for our future.

Check your beneficiary designations. If your valentine also happens to be your spouse, you’ll be doing him or her a favor by making sure the beneficiary designations are correct on your insurance policies and invest-ment accounts. Through all the events of life — marriage, remarriage, new children — these designations can become outdated, so you’ll want to keep them current.

By following any or all of these suggestions, you can help make sure your loved one will feel the glow of this year’s Valentine’s Day far into the future.

how can i change my diet for better blood pressure con-trol? g.d.

To lower blood pressure, one of the most important things that you can do is follow a low sodium diet (less than 1500 milligrams per day). Sodium chloride or table salt is approximately 40% sodium. understand how much sodium is in salt so you can take measures to control your intake. 1 teaspoon salt equals about 2,300 milligrams sodium; sodium intake comes primarily from processed foods and condiments. read labels on packaged foods for serving sizes and sodium content. many restaurants list sodium content of menu items. You may be surprised at how much sodium you consume.

use whole grain breads, cereals, pasta and brown rice; choose lean cuts of meat and poultry, fish, fresh fruits, nonfat dairy products, nuts and vegetables. This type of diet is high in potassium, calcium, magnesium, protein and fiber. limiting saturated fats, high fat red meats, sweets and sugared beverages is also part of what is known as the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension).

i’m confused by all of the different diets and need some basic rules for weight loss. where do i start? M. r.

no doubt, weight loss advice comes and goes, and this can cause more confusion than anyone needs! Here are some suggestions to get you started:

• Eating at regular times- Avoid skipping meals

• Drink water, low calorie beverages.

• Prepare raw vegetables for when the urge to snack hits.

• Keep fresh fruit readily available and visible.

• Regular physical activity. Discuss the safest options with your doctor.

• NO eating in front of screens-such as the TV or computer

• One quarter of your plate should be covered with starchy foods. Choose whole grain breads, brown rice, pasta.

• One quarter of your plate should be covered with lean protein.

• Half of your plate should be filled with vegetables- high in fiber and low in calories.

Cooking at home gives us more control, but with so many meals eaten at restaurants, any change helps. While on the road, here are some tips to help you keep your weight on track:

• Stay away from anything fried.

• The less legs the better! Chickens and turkeys have two legs while pigs and cows have four. Animals with less legs tend to have leaner meats (meats that are better for you).

• Remove the skin from poultry dishes.

• Hold the mayo and other creamy/oily sauces.

In the January issue, we talked about how Diets Don’t Work. You’re probably saying to yourself, “So if diets don’t work, what do I do now?” Well, making a temporary

change (a diet) is not going to give you the long-term, lasting results you are looking for, but you can’t make drastic changes in your habits overnight (unless you are a very disciplined per-son and I don’t know about you, but I am NOT one of those people). The changes I’ve made in my own eating habits started with small changes over time. After all, it took me well over 30 years to get into really bad shape, did I really think I could pop a pill, rock my abs or change my bad habits overnight? I felt like I knew what I needed to do, but I had no clue how to get myself from where I was to where I needed to be.

To be honest, we thought we were doing a decent job with food for our family. Sure, we knew we needed to eat some more veggies, but other than that, we were not eating a lot of red meat and we were eating low-fat and non-fat things. (Hey, the box said that non-fat was healthy! Plus, all those vitamins and minerals in that cereal was part of a well-balanced breakfast! Right?)

Here is what my meal plan used to look like: breakfast cereal or a scone or maybe a banana and coffee; sometimes I even skipped breakfast all together. By the time lunch came around, I was starving, so I had some Mexican food or a turkey sandwich and chips and a diet soda. After a long day at the Slate Rock and Gravel Company, I had the appetite of Fred Flintstone, so I came home and snacked on a chips, crackers, cookies or whatever else I could quickly get in my mouth before I passed out. Dinner was usually one of the same 7-10 things we always made: spaghetti, tacos, chicken with some sort of boxed noodles and a few pieces of asparagus or broccoli (We thought we were health freaks with this meal!), sloppy joe’s, chicken pot pies, frozen lasagna & maybe a salad, pizza, ground turkey with boxed ingredients like Hamburger Helper, etc. You get the idea. Now, I am sure YOU don’t eat like this, but now-a-days with two work-ing parents, these kinds of foods are cheap, easy to prepare and convenient to purchase for many families.

If you look at what we ate, for the most part, it came in a box and was processed and prepared for our ease of use. There was no real fruit, vegetables and/or whole grains in these foods. If you look at the nutrition and ingredients

labels, you will see they are full of calories, sugar, fats, salts and a bunch of things I cannot even pronounce. We were processed people.

Now, these types of meals are not necessarily bad or unhealthy for you. As a matter of fact, we still enjoy many of these meals today. The difference is, when we have these meals, we prepare them with real, whole foods, rather than boxes and packages. The problem with processed foods is they remove all the good stuff and add other stuff in so it can

last longer on the grocery store shelf and in your cupboards. When you leave your body craving the nutrients it needs, it will keep telling you you’re hungry, even after you’ve eaten plenty of calories.

So, a simple challenge is to get yourself thinking about ‘real food’. Don’t get crazy thinking you’re going to change all your eating habits overnight, but consider some baby steps toward better habits. Here are a couple to get you started this month:

Buy Real Food - You’re probably saying, “Real food? What am I buy-ing now?” If you are like us, you are buying food-like things, but not real food. Real food is found in the perimeter of the grocery store: the produce, meat and dairy sections. If it comes in a box and has an ingredients list of more than 5 ingredients (that can’t define and your kids cannot pronounce), it is probably not real food. Focus on things that have whole grains and avoid the white flour products. All of the dinners we used to eat can be made with real whole foods.

It will take a little more work then just adding boxed substance to boil-ing water or putting a box of something in the microwave or heating some frozen pieces up in the oven on a cookie sheet, but once you get in the swing of things, you will be amazed how easy it is and what real food tastes like and how great it will make you feel and look.

Fruit Bowl - One thing I did early on was go out and buy the largest fruit bowl I could find (it was actually a salad bowl) and I placed it on the center of our kitchen island and made sure it was full of nice-looking, interesting fruit. Before I purchased the bowl, the fruit we purchased was stored in the bottom of the refrigerator and was not visible or easily accessible. It usually went bad before anyone touched it. After the bowl, when I came into the kitchen I would see the fruit and grab it instead of chips or something less healthy in the cupboard.

These are not huge changes, so give them a try. Small changes like this can change your life over time. What do you have to lose? If you need some help, I am starting a blog with recipes and tips to help you out at www.HeresWhatiDo.com. Or, give me a call and I’ll help you find a way to get more real food into your fridge and your family. (760) 593-7512 or [email protected].

business spotlight

The International Institute of Martial Arts (IIMA) is right here in San Marcos and is a great resource for a wide variety of martial arts. They are located on Mission Road, just over Twin Oaks. They have been in business for 20 years, originally opening in a small facility in Escondido. Over the years, they have grown steadily and their current facility in San Marcos boasts nearly 20,000 square feet with four separate training rooms making IIMA one of the largest facilities in the nation. IIMA offers instruc-tors that are World champions, credentialed teachers, and, most importantly, passionate about the benefits of martial arts. One of their instructors, Ken Hayashi, lives here in San Elijo Hills. And while IIMA has taken home World Champions trophies and World and National Titles, what draws students and families to their classes is the fun, family atmosphere they provide.

The owners are Sensei Jeff Brown and his wife, Michelle. Jeff is a World Title Holder and 5-time Hall of Fame Member. Jeff began his train-ing at 10 years old and has devoted his life to teaching children the benefits of martial arts. Michelle is a credentialed teacher with training in special education. Jeff and Michelle they have three children of their own and together they enjoy sharing their passion for the martial arts with students throughout the area.

At IIMA, you’ll find classes in many styles including: Taekwondo, Wado Ryu, Juijitsu, Aikido, Krav Maga, Muay Tai and Kickboxing. They

offer regular classes, summer camps, after school pro-grams at various schools, and programs at the Corky Smith gym in San Marcos.

Besides the size, scope and longevity of their program, one of the other things that distinguishes IIMA is an emphasis on academics. Students receive recognition and awards for their work not only in their martial arts classes, but also for their hard work at school. Integrating excellence into all areas of life is something IIMA instructors encourage and promote.

Many children begin IIMA classes as early as age 3. If you’ve ever spoken with someone who practices

martial arts, you’ve heard of the benefits. Many children diagnosed with ADHD or behavior problems improve significantly after taking classes at IIMA. The Browns have seen children who were on medications for these types of issues improve to the point of reducing their prescription. In addi-tion, students and their families benefit from the close-knit relationships that form through their practice.

Adjacent to their facility is the International Fitness Center a full ser-vice gym with equipment, personal training, tanning beds, locker rooms with showers, nutritional supplements and kids classes. If you’re looking for a great outlet for your children or yourself, stop by and try a class or two. You’ll be amazed at the benefits you can gain both physically and emotion-ally. Visit IIMA at 456 E Mission Rd, San Marcos. www.iimakarate.com.
