Lisa Pattison, HHP

I started at re:form three years ago, when I was 57. Up until that point

I had mostly walked for exercise and I had never even been on the bike. Today

I am strong and full of energy...which I get to use with my grandchildren. It ’s

made such a big difference in my life! – Fereshteh Yahyapour : La Cost

Exercise had always been an integral part of my life but somehow on the

journey, I lost it. re:form not only helped me find it back but has challenged

me in ways I never knew were possible. – Shawna Esarey : San Elijo Hills

Four Words…I Love re:form fitness. I have always been an active person and I

have tried lots of avenues to up my level of fitness from traditional gym

memberships, to one-on-one personal training, to large group classes and

“boot camps”, and nothing compares. – Whitney Fields : Carlsbad

My goal was to lose weight, maybe even fit into a smaller jean size. Initially,

I started working out several times a week and every week the scale would go

down and the muscles grew. It was amazing to see my body change.

– Susan : San Elijo Hills

After a year of physical therapy with minimal results to address my loss of

muscle mass and lower back problems. It ’s been seven months and I can truly

say that re:form has changed my life. I not only lost 11% of my body fat, I can

now actually pick up my daughter without the fear of hurting my back now

that my core strength is so much better. – Cindy Davis : San Elijo Hills

re:form is not just the name it is what they do. My body is becoming the body I

always wanted but did not know how to get. I am mid 40’s and have no prob-

lem jumping into any activity. Best workout, never the same, results are off the

charts! – James Reeve : San Elijo Hills

Spring is sneaking up on us here in San Elijo Hills. And, if you’re like most, you’re starting to get the ‘itch’ to start that home improvement project, begin your spring gardening, or just get that new project off the ground. That’s what spring is all about – clean, tidy, organize, launch, and grow!

Maybe you need some new paint on the eaves or your back fence. Maybe you’ve noticed a film building up on your windows. Maybe you really need some extra space and want to add on a room, a built-in or even an outdoor room to enjoy this summer. Whatever that dream you have for your home – spring is a great time to get started (or maybe just to finish that project you started last year that never got done!).

This issue offers some great tips for your living room and remodel-ing projects. You’ll also find some great neighborhood resources on the back page of the Buy Local insert. This special insert is the first of a six-part series that will help us all focus on the importance of buying locally - while showcasing creative ways to use our neighborhood retail shops on a more regular basis. In addition, it’s a great

opportunity for all of us – as business professionals, entrepreneurs and community members – to share our connections and network. I’ll bet there’s some-body here in our community that could help your

business or your family in a powerful way. Don’t you? You just have to meet them!

This spring as you start your newest projects, why not call on a neighbor and their expertise to help you out? Start right here in The Fountain and if you don’t find what you’re looking for, let us know and we’ll see if we can hunt it down for you. Or if you have a great referral to share, let us know so we can share it with the community.

What good is living in a neigh-borhood if you can’t borrow a cup

of sugar or get a referral from someone nearby? Catch the fever and get started! There are plenty of opportunities this month to meet someone new – Mardi Gras, Art Show, Family Fun Nite on March 4; SMHS Gala on March 5; Sidewalk Sunday on March 13. We’ll see you out there!

Don’t miss Sidewalk Sunday on March 13 from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm! Get your family and neighbors to join you at

the Town Square for fun activities, goodies, and amaz-ing discounts. We hope you’ll show up and support our neighborhood businesses! It will be a fun day in San Elijo Hills. You’ll have the chance to meet over 30 differ-ent local businesses exhibiting at the event. You can try samples in the Town Square, enjoy a quick chair massage in front of Frenchs Nail Salon & Spa and grab a slice of pizza for a buck!

Get to know your neighborhood businesses here in San Elijo Hills. Supporting local businesses is absolutely essential not only to our local economy and environment, but also to our home values and our overall quality of life. Jump on board and get serious about finding ways to make ‘buying local’ a way of life for you and your family.

Paso robles winemaker to visit north county

san diego

Kyle Hensley, a resident of Sagewood in San Elijo Hills, is a Vice President for Hope Family Wines (HFW) and on Monday, March 14, he is bringing Winemaker, JC Diefenderfer, to Firefly Grill & Wine Bar in Encinitas for a special Winemaker Dinner.

Winemaker dinners are a great way to enjoy a specially selected menu of wines paired with a menu of foods and visit with the actual winemaker throughout the night. It is a rare opportunity to ask questions about the wines and the winemaking process. Whether you are a connoisseur or a novice, winemaker dinners are a fun and exciting way to experience a bottle of wine.

Kyle has an extensive career in the wine business, working with Domaine Chandon, Château Ste. Michelle, and Gallo prior to joining HFW in 2006. He will be working directly with Firefly to create an experience that everyone will enjoy. The evening starts at 6:30 pm with an hors d’ oeuvres reception, followed by two courses, the main entrée and ends with dessert. Yes, there is even wine paired with dessert! It’s a five-course dinner paired with wines for $59.

Hope Family Wines has been located in the Central Coast of California in Paso Robles since 1978. Owned and operated by the Hope family, labels include Liberty School, Treana, Candor, Austin Hope and Westside Red. Their wines have won numerous awards from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast publications.

Firefly Grill & Wine Bar is located in Encinitas on El Camino Real, and is a favorite spot for North County residents. They have tastings, Prix Fixe menus as well as a host of other special events throughout the year.

Space fills up fast, so make reservations now to ensure your experi-ence. And make sure to introduce yourself to Kyle during the night so you can get a personal introduction to JC.

Contact Jim Barrasso at Firefly Grill & Wine Bar at [email protected] or (760) 635-1066 to reserve your spot for this up-close and personal event. You can also find additional information at www.hopefamilywines.com and www.fireflygrillandwinebar.com.

The San Elijo Hills Women’s Club (SEHWC) is hosting their second Food Drive to support The Angel’s Depot on Saturday, March 26, 8 am to 5:30 pm, in front of Albertsons here in San Elijo Hills.

SEHWC has selected The Angel’s Depot as one of the charities they support. This non-profit organization, located in Vista, provides FREE food for San Diego County senior citizens who live on $950 or less per month. “Senior Food-for-a-Week” 21-meal emergency boxes contain 21 nutritious, nonperishable meals, which provide food security until the seniors’ next Social Security check arrives. 50,000 senior citizens live in poverty in San Diego County. The Angel’s Depot says their work will not be finished until there are no more seniors living with the pain and shame of hunger. The Angel’s Depot is a nonprofit corporation; your donations are tax deductible.

The August 2010 SEHWC Food Drive collected over 700 cans of food and some cash donations from the generous SEH community. Those dona-

How can you help? Shop at Albertsons on Saturday, March 26. Purchase any 15-ounce canned fruit or canned vegetables and give your cans to the women of SEHWC who will be in front of the store to accept your contributions.

Positive coaching alliance workshops in san elijo hills!

The Academy at San Elijo and San Elijo FC are proud to announce their partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance. Positive Coaching Alliance was founded as a non-profit within the Stanford University Athletic Department in 1998.

Since that inception, Positive Coaching Alliance, through their part-nerships with more than 1,100 youth sports organizations, leagues, schools and cities nationwide, has conducted 6,000 plus workshops for youth sports coaches, parents, organizational leaders and athletes.

The Academy at San Elijo and San Elijo FC will be holding three 30-minute parent workshops in the San Elijo Middle School Auditorium on Thursday, March 24 from 6 to 8 pm. If you have a child who participates in youth sports at any level, we strongly encourage at least one parent from every family to attend one of these workshops.

The purpose and benefit of these workshops is to train youth sports parents to focus on helping their children process the life lessons uniquely available through sports. This highly interactive workshop provides specific tips and techniques for parents to use in talking with their children. It also helps parents create productive relationships with coaches while becoming effective and positive team supporters in the stands and on the sidelines!

The cost is $20 per parent. For complete details and online registra-tion, please visit: www.theacademyatsanelijo.com. Select “Positive Coaching Alliance Partnership” under site contents on the left-hand side of our home page. For further information regarding the Positive Coaching Alliance, please visit: www.positivecoach.org.

san elijo fcSan Elijo FC is San Marcos’s Premier Competitive Soccer Club. San

Elijo FC is a non-profit youth soccer club serving competitive level soc-cer players ages 8 - 16. Our mission is to provide competitive level soccer development that enables individuals and teams to reach their full potential so that they can experience success in life through the game of soccer.

As part of our core values at San Elijo FC, we are committed to remov-ing financial barriers for families with limited means whose children are capable of playing competitive level soccer. We want to make sure that any able child can play competitive soccer, regardless of his or her economic situation. We have faced, and will continue to face challenges making this unique and highly-rewarding experience available to all families, especially those with limited finances.

San Elijo FC is asking individuals or businesses to consider making a tax-deductible gift to San Elijo FC or consider a sponsorship with our club or one of our teams. In doing so, you can help us make the outstanding San Elijo FC soccer experience a reality for deserving, passionate players and teams.

San Elijo FC offers several levels of sponsorship including World Cup, National Cup, and State Cup levels for all of our teams. Not only do these sponsorships assist the club in helping to remove some of these financial barriers, they also enable us to help offset costs related to equipment and uniforms. For further information regarding making a tax-deductable gift or to get involved at a sponsorship level, please contact Founder and Club Director Chris Fitzsimmons at [email protected]

chris orlanDo: citY council Several capital improvement projects are planned to help ease traffic flow along SR-78 in San Marcos as well as the transition interchange between Interstate 15 and SR-78.

A new bridge at Nordahl Road and SR-78 will be the first major step towards relief in an area that has

long been plagued with congestion. The new interchange bridge will increase overall vehicle capacity, add space for turn lanes to the SR-78 eastbound and westbound on-ramps, and accommodate future widening and additional HOV lanes on SR-78. It will also increase the height of the bridge for motorists traveling underneath SR-78.

The $37 million bridge project is a partnership between Caltrans and the cities of San Marcos and Escondido. Caltrans is taking the lead on the project, which will get under way this summer and take about 18 months to complete. San Marcos’ contribution to the project funding is about $4.25 million.

The City of San Marcos will also be making improvements to the inter-section at Nordahl Road and Montiel Road during the bridge construction project. Montiel Road will be widened and its configuration modified to help

Major Improvements Planned to Relieve Traffic Congestion in San Marcos

improve traffic circulation. This $1.38 million improvement will work in concert with the new bridge interchange.

To the east of the new bridge project, Caltrans will be widening the connector on-ramp from I-15 to westbound SR-78 and adding a fifth westbound lane on SR-78 between the end of the I-15 connector ramp and Nordahl Road. This improvement will help ease the backup that forms when traffic currently merges from I-15 onto SR-78.

Finally, the City of San Marcos will construct an eastbound auxiliary lane on SR-78 between Woodland Parkway and Nordahl Road. The addi-tion of this auxiliary lane will help uncork the bottleneck that forms in this area during peak morning and afternoon commute times. Construction on the $10 million auxiliary lane project is slated to start this summer.

All of these areas will still be accessible to traffic while under construc-tion; however, access will be limited and delays should be expected. Motorists are asked to use alternate routes if possible. Construction timelines on the projects have been streamlined in order to minimize inconvenience to the public.

Once complete, these projects will work together to provide significant traffic congestion relief to San Marcos.

people in your neighborhood

Sonny Carrillo and Rebecca Condello moved to San Elijo Hills in November of 2010. They moved most recently from Austin. Sonny grew up in Loredo, Texas, which is where he and Rebecca met. Rebecca was working as a local news reporter and Sonny was her camera guy. Great story, right?! They got married in 2004 and worked for FOX News in Austin for many years. Rebecca studied Journalism at San Diego State University, which is where her love of San Diego was born. When the opportunity presented itself to make a fresh start here in the San Diego area, they jumped on it. Rebecca has a friend that lives in San Elijo Hills and they knew this is exactly where they wanted to be.

Sonny has worked in video production since 1995. After moving to San Diego, he launched his own video production business called LittleCar Productions. He works with a wide variety of clients to deliver video pro-duction for functions in the greater San Diego area. Whether it’s a wedding, family reunion, corporate or sporting event, the LittleCar team can deliver

the perfect video. Or perhaps you’re look-ing for video for your website? Give Sonny a call.

Rebecca is the Release Manager for a software company based out of the Bay Area. She is very busy with her latest software release project, but also enjoys supporting Sonny in promoting and marketing the busi-ness they are building.

When they are not busy working, you will see Sonny and Rebecca out walking their Golden Retriever, Lilly. The three of them enjoy hiking the trails, going to the beach and being outdoors. When you see them out

and about, be sure and introduce yourself. You’ll also see them out this month at the Sidewalk Sunday event on March 13 where you can learn more about their video services. And next month at the SEES Country Fair, LittleCar Productions has donated their services to create a video for the event. Sonny and Rebecca are a lovely couple and look forward to establishing themselves in the community. You can visit their website at www.LittleCarProductions.com or contact Sonny at [email protected], (760) 798-7601.

Annual Elementary Track MeetbY mrs. pope, p.e . teacher

The 27th Annual track meet will be held on Wednesday, May 25 begin-ning at 4 pm. The meet will be held at San Marcos High School. Students in Third, Fourth and Fifth grades are invited to represent our school. There are six events: 50-meter dash, 100-meter run, 4 X 100-meter relay, 400-meter individual run, softball throw and the running long jump. There are nine boys and nine girls selected from each grade level. Time trials are con-ducted during regular P.E. classes. Students running with the shortest times and longest throw or jump are considered, based on level of participation and citizenship during P.E. classes. Also considered are years of participation in previous track meets. Normally 1/3 of selected student are rotated for par-ticipation in the meet. Some of our fastest students participate in all three year meets and some of our fast students participate in one meet.

Time trials will be held during the months of February and March in P.E. class. There are approximately 150 to 175 students to time in each grade level. The team roster is posted either the last Friday in April or the first Friday in May. Team practices are held during P.E. class. In addition one or two practices are scheduled afterschool on the Middle School track. Parent volunteers are encouraged for afterschool practices. SEES PTO provides team t-shirts, which are distributed the week of the meet.

The Question Parents Ask Most: “What Happened in School Today?”

points from a principal – Douglas hall

When most parents sit down together at the dinner table, they often ask their students, “What happened in school today?” Certainly some students are more vocal than others and will talk endlessly about their day. Others, however, give a single-word response- “Nothing.” And even though par-ents keep prodding their students to open up and talk more, their reply of “Nothing” or “everything is “Fine” continues. This often occurs as they enter middle school or high school.

There are techniques that parents can use to get their students to talk about school. Just as teachers have learned to word questions in a manner that doesn’t allow a single-word response, we as parents can also learn this technique.

For example, instead of asking “What did you learn in school today?” which allows a single-word response, try asking a more direct question. You might say “What did you language arts teacher think of the story you wrote?” or “What are you working on in Science?” or “What class did you like most today?” and “Why?”

This type of questioning encourages the student to answer with more than one word. It requires the student to put some thought into the answer, and it also provides direction for additional questions.

Your first question may be designed “Just to get your student to talk.”

Teachers use this technique often before asking questions about class work. For instance, you can ask, “What did you have for lunch today at

school?’ or did you see Mary at school today?” These kinds of ‘Leading in questions” can get students talking quickly. Also, you can ask “Good ques-tions” about what’s happening at school if you go to the school website or look at the activity calendar for the school. Back-to-school nights, Parent-orientations, Connect-ed phone calls, and web blasts are all done to inform parents of the classroom curriculum and procedures. This will also give you an idea of the numerous ‘FUN” activities that will take place during the year so you know what questions to ask your student. For example, if the students are going on a field trip in band on Thursday, then on Thursday the follow up questions would be asked: “How was it to be up there on stage in front of the judges?”

Test days and the beginning and ending of the grading periods or semesters are important times that can be put on the home calendar. Long term projects are also a key one to pencil in and monitor. These reminders will also give you the information needed to ask the right questions at the right times, so you don’t have the Sunday night trip to get the items needed for the project due at 8 am the next day. Start the discussion with “What material will be covered on your test tomorrow?” or “I noticed that you started Chapter 5 today. What is it about?”

I hope that these tips help you get better answers to the question, “What happened in school today?” Building a positive line of communication is vital to the success we all seek for each and every one of our students. Please feel free to contact your school if you would like additional information on this topic or any other areas of concern you may have.

healthY choices

Healthy choices brought students Jennifer Maxin, Ellen Prickett, Kylies Slater, Dylan Lindsay, Alexsys Stroh, Jennifer Castiglione, Cody Licas, Nina Tram, Cole De Carlo, Hannah Engel, Matty Bernstein, Haily Morejon, Mackenzie Kirkwood, Tia-Channell Harenandez and Delaney Ryan to the Nutrition Advisory Conference in Pasadena. The ASB leaders assist with the promotion of making healthy food choices on campus.

fitness

6th grade teacher, Jill van Es, and her family will be participating in a 5K Family Fun Walk at the Wild Animal Park on Sunday, March 13. Many of Mrs. van Es’ students will be joining her on this positive expression in sup-port of being fit and healthy.

music

Mr. Charlie McGhee and his team of amazing volunteer adult musician mentors have led the Golden Eagle musicians to many a superior rating at band festivals! He also brings award-winning musicians to perform for the SEMS music students. Students recently heard the piano music of Vincent Yang, the winner of the National Young Musician’s Award competition. Students sat back and breathed in the beauty of Mr. Yang’s music and were also able to ask questions after his performance.

art

Art teacher, Debra Paris, didn’t let the lack of money for field trips stop her wish for students to experience an exceptional art exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. Ms. Paris organized a family tour of the “Collection Applied Design: A Kim MacConnel Retrospective” by inviting parents to bring their students to the exhibit. Adults did pay for entrance, but students were admitted free thanks to Ms. Paris’ very creative approach and work with the museum.

science

SEMS students have access to great community resources, especially in the form of parents willing to share their expertise. Recently, 7th grade sci-ence teacher, Mrs. Jami Phillips, worked with one of her student’s parents, who spoke about endangered birds, as part of the Evolution Unit on adapta-tion. Thank you to Mr. Kershner for spending time with the 7th grade sci-ence classes and to Mrs. Cathy Munson, another 7th grade science teacher, for bringing the bird specimens on loan from the San Diego Museum of Man to SEMS.

smhs: most positive school in the world!

San Marcos High School has been voted the most positive high school in the world! At a January 19 ceremony at SMHS, Principal Julie Mottershaw received the United Nations Non-Governmental Organizations Positive Peace Award from Celebrate Positive CEO Scott Pederson, San Diego Rotary District Governor Dave Breeding and San Marcos Rotary President Linda Strand. Pederson established Celebrate Positive to change the media perpetuation that “negativity is normal.”

In conjunction with the United Nations NGO, The UN International Day of Peace, and International Peace Week, the Positive Peace Awards are given to businesses, entertainment entities, sports figures, communities, and schools for their commitments to positive behavior on a worldwide level. Nominations for the businesses, communities, entertainment and sports categories are submitted by non-profit organizations; for schools, students are asked to submit essays on “Why My School is the Most Positive School in the World.” Winners were selected from a field of more than 4,000 by a panel of United Nations NGOs, including Pathways to Peace, Rotary Club International, and Sister Cities International.

The winning essay by SMHS Senior Tracy Ratledge presented a school of unparalleled character and determination. She described students’ high attendance and spirits at sports events, their culture of academic camaraderie rather than competition that has led to soaring test scores, and their deter-mination to be better than the school’s outside appearance might suggest. Also highlighted were the positive efforts by our Global Awareness Club and annual Girls’ Empowerment Summit. Tracy noted San Marcos High School is a place where the students’ and staff ’s commitment to each other has led to a “positivity that emanates on every inch of campus.”

looking into a remodeling project, money tends to be the number one factor but, when the work is finished, the money factor actually drops to six or seven on the list,” says Walton. He says what ends up being more impor-tant is the fact that the homeowner hired a remodeling company that provided a complete understanding of the entire remodeling process, and oversaw the project from the design phase to the building of it—leaving the homeowner with just one primary company to work with during the remodel.

if a company offers free design, you’ll likely

get what you pay for. If a company is offering “free design” it’s likely that the design fees are somewhere hid-den in the overall cost. “The design can make or break the project,” says Walton. It’s the least amount of the cost

of the overall project, but it’s highly critical to the success of your remodel. “With our process, we’re going to talk to homeowners about what furniture is sentimental and how it will fit in the remodel, sun orientation, views, traffic patterns and flow, and our clients’ lifestyle—this is how we build the project. We don’t build it from a, ‘Oh, I want to add an 8 x 10 room.’ Instead I find out how my clients live and what they’re all about and then the project is designed based on those answers.”

does the remodeling company offer several design options to

help you stay within your budget? “You have to be open to a certain budget range that you’re comfortable in and then you should really spend time up front reviewing a lot of different designs so that you don’t get locked into one design at one price point. That happens a lot. People will hire an architectural firm and they’ll end up going through weeks and weeks of planning or drawing. They’ll get a set of plans down to the point where they can then send it out for bids and then usually they find out that they’re over budget,” says Walton.

look for low change order percentage. Change orders are orders that call for a deviation from the prior written remodel orders. Change orders can be generated because of code changes, unforeseen conditions, or homeowners wanting to add or change the remodel project. A company with a low change order rate likely indicates it is taking the necessary time in the design and research phases to ensure that the project meets the clients’ needs and all code requirements.

Getting the Best Value for Your RemodelWhether you’re remodeling your home for comfort

or to increase the value, homeowners know that a well-done remodel can bring both pleasure and a good return on investment. Remodeling is, however, a big step for many homeowners. Getting the best value for your remodel shouldn’t come from guesswork; instead, knowing how to find a remodeling company with a solid reputation and one that delivers quality work through-out the entire remodeling process requires research. Make sure the company that is doing the remodel asks the right questions, does its homework, and offers full-service design and remodeling under one roof.

Steve Walton, Senior Design Consultant for Marrokal Design and Remodeling here in San Diego helps clients sort through what can be a complicated process to get the best value remodel that meets all his clients’ needs. The full-service home-design remodel company offers hom-eowners one-stop shopping for their remodeling needs.

“When I meet with clients, I have them describe their ideas for the remodeling project. I take a lot of notes,” says Walton. The design consultant then sets another meeting at Marrokal’s Design and Remodeling center. Prior to this meeting, Walton has already done his homework and researched any likely obstacles for the remodel. Some companies take on a project and later discover remodeling barriers.

“I develop a written program based on what my clients’ needs and goals are for their remodel,” says Walton. He adds, “Throughout this, I am digging deep and finding out what’s important to my clients. A lot of companies don’t ask these questions, but this is how Marrokal Design and Remodeling starts to develop a preliminary budget for our clients.”

The company also uses value engineering to design the remodel with clients’ budget needs and requested items in mind. “Value engineering” means refining and sometimes redesigning aspects of the remodel to make it more cost-effective.

key Tips to Hiring a Quality remodeler

look for a full-service company. A full-service company keeps your remodeling project running smoothly by coordinating all of the necessary design, construction developments, and communication with trade compa-nies through one primary source (removing the unnecessary hassle of trying to get numerous trade companies to work together). “When people are first

“Where do I begin” is a question we are often confronted with when one begins to even enter-tain the process of creating a new living room in their home. When it comes to living room design ideas, we need to consider the following: with so many activities to cater for and so many people to keep happy, this space will be a success only if planned appropriately. Good living room design, practically speaking, must consider the many activities one wishes to accommodate in the space while at the same time using decorative finishes that are aesthetically pleasing.

Your starting point when it comes to designing the living rooms is, as always, to determine exactly what you want from this room as this will dic-tate the space planning. Perhaps you’ve been perusing your favorite Interior Design magazines noticing different ideas you find pleasing. Tear these pages out and use them to assemble your personalized design scrapbook. Additionally, you’ll want to write down all your design ideas to help you decide on the room’s ultimate functionality.

Is the space to be a leisure room for quiet reading, listening to music, letter writing, watching television? An entertainment room for family par-ties, including an area perhaps for board games? Are you considering sur-round sound entertainment for the ultimate in movie watching? Will you be needing a small desk to accommodate a computer? Maybe your idea is

to incorporate all of these functions. These activities, as diverse as they are, will

require a lighting plan, audio and video equip-ment, appropriate storage and furniture to suit these needs. This will include case goods as well as upholstered pieces. By including these things in your scrapbook, which should have your design plan as well, it will give you the help you need to stay focused on the end result, your beautifully functioning living room.

When deciding on your furniture layout, it is important to establish a focal point, a point of inter-

est that can be highlighted and around which the furniture will be arranged. If the main function of this living room will be for reading and relaxing, perhaps the focal point would be the fireplace, if one exists. On the other hand, if a home theatre is ultimately the main use of your living room, then the television would be the more obvious focal point.

If your living room is a large space, you may consider having several areas around which you can arrange conversational groupings.

Choosing the style for your new space can be as much fun as choosing the new materials you plan to use. Your style may be inspired by a beautiful piece of art, a favorite family heirloom or just pictures of things you’ve col-lected in your design scrapbook. Whatever style you eventually choose, trust your gut and just go for it! In the end you’ll be glad you did.

It’s National Craft Month: Get Inspired and Discover a HobbyThe month of March isn’t just the kickoff for springtime, a season sym-

bolized by rebirth, renewal and growth – it’s also National Crafting Month. Every single one of us is creative as an individual, regardless of whether we were encouraged to be while growing up, or pursue it in adult-hood. Fostering creativity is incredibly important for any person, regardless of age. Not only does it give us a break from school, work and other respon-sibilities, it connects us to other like-minded individuals, providing pleasure, therapy – even a secondary income, always a bonus these days.

Taking time out to be artistic is a great way to enrich your life, and you don’t have to consider yourself an artist to do so. Not everyone succeeds at every creative pursuit they attempt. Some people can’t draw, but sew beautifully. Others choose to express their art not with paint and canvas, but quilting materials. There are makers of intricate jewelry who don’t have the patience to knit or crochet. Woodworking appeals to some more than food crafting might – basically, we are as unique in our choice of recreation as we are as individuals. So it may take time to discover a leisure activ-ity that speaks to our soul, but it is always worth it. If you can’t always find everyday inspiration where you work, a pastime allows for both personal expression and accomplishment.

How do you become more imaginative if you haven’t tried to be since grade school? Chances you have been – either at home following a recipe, preparing for a birthday party, or in the course of some other daily life situation – so don’t be so hard on yourself. Ask people about their hobbies, participate in art studio tours, talk to vendors at street fairs, check out col-lege continuing education calendars, and find independent retailers that host classes. You might be surprised by what eventually piques your interest.

Once you make a choice – whether to complete just a single project or commit to a new sideline – it’s extremely important for any member of a community to be creative when shopping – making the effort to buy local first, before heading to a chain or ordering on-line. Why is that not just a personal priority, but a civic one? First, when you shop locally, you help sustain a wider selection of goods in the marketplace. Independent retailers often carry unique merchandise from smaller manufacturers, often “mom and pop” shops just like their own. Many of these companies are creating their products right here in the United States, and don’t have the sales num-bers to get their wares in bigger national retailers. You’re not just supporting your neighbors, you’re contributing to county tax dollars, which keeps our city running.

There is a definite place for large, chain, big box stores – they provide a

wide selection, competitive price points, and shopping convenience. That’s helpful for busy families. However, they deal with high-volume vendors, and are increasingly stocking private label brands sourced directly from factories abroad – lowering the number of domestic vendors previously used. When this happens, American businesses close, and options shrink. The craft and hobby industry has felt this dramatic shift in the commercial landscape in the past few years. Increasingly, larger chains in the field are being bought by private equity firms – run by business executives for maximum revenue.

Of course, every enterprise must be run for profit. But in such a creative field where firms are often started by artists, not finance school grads, it’s crucial to see the key role inde-pendent retailers occupy – helping everyone from consum-ers to their larger competitors. Small companies often don’t have the resources to sell on a wide scale, so they depend on the local shop to reach customers and gain awareness. Also, it’s in these same stores that patrons like you can get specific help from store staff – most having been hired because they are crafters themselves, and have used many of the products

they carry. Superstore employees have more ground to cover, and frankly, many aren’t crafters, but sales associates. Chains are improving – offering more classes and on-line tutorials – but generally speaking, the larger the store, the more educated the consumer needs to be when shopping there. Where can they get in-person instruction? Smaller retailers. The two are inter-related; it’s just that our communities – our neighbors, even ourselves – depend on us remembering to shop local first.

When we are attempting a new skill, practice is often a key component to mastery. Hours, months, even years may be required to finally get a sense of confidence. It’s through learning: by means of books, classes, on-line blog instruction, and ideally in person via an experienced mentor – that could be grandma or a master tradesman – where a level of proficiency is finally reached. One thing to note in crafting: some of us enjoy the process, and some of us want the results. Crucial to your level of satisfaction is identifying whether you’re the former, the latter, or a mix of the two. That information can assist in your choice of pursuit, and give better odds of success.

There is a theory that the more high-tech our jobs and lifestyle become, the higher the contrast there will be with hand-held, tactile hobbies. It’s easy to appreciate a delicately-made accessory, sculpture, painting – even a custom-made wood-paneled room – after being stuck in an office all day. What’s better is the pride that comes from having crafted it yourself. Taking time to embark on a new hobby, either by yourself or with a friend or family member, isn’t really a luxury – it’s a necessity for well-being. So this March, indulge; and as nature blooms, so can your creativity.

AAh yes, good old green eggs and ham! You can learn a lot from a Dr.

Suess book. My dad read Green Eggs and Ham to me growing up and I read the same book to both my kids when they were, well, kids. I imagine my kids will one day be read-ing it to their kids (but hopefully not anytime soon). I actually don’t have a problem with green eggs and ham; for me, it was always the vegetables. I did not like them, Sam I am!

Growing up my mom always nagged me, “Eat your vegetables!” (in that nagging voice). Yeah, well, as much as I hate to admit it, she was right! According to the USDA 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, we are not eating enough vegetables and we are “eating too much added sugars, solid fats, refined grains, and sodium.” Looking back, it’s funny how many of the things our parents said were right (darn it). Some day I am sure my kids will look back and say the same thing about us.

When you grow up, Mom is not there anymore to tell you to eat your vegetables every day. You can eat what you want, when you want and no one is there to tell you differently. What ends up happening, though, is you start eating more of what you DO like and don’t really go out of your way to cook or order things you don’t like (i.e., a variety of vegetables).

Well, after 25 years of being on my own, I knew I had to start eating more vegetables, so I started drinking V8 juice. After all, the commercial said it had like 3 servings of vegetables in it. I figured one of those bad boys and some steamed veggies at dinner and I would be all set. The problem, however, was V8 is loaded with sodium and I knew deep down I was still missing something by not consuming the whole vegetable.

So, I started making my own vegetable drink - a green smoothie - with the whole vegetable (not just the juice). It was low in calories and sodium and LOADED with fiber and all the vitamins, minerals and phytochemi-cals our bodies need to function properly and to stay healthy; and it tasted great! What I noticed when I started drinking these whole vegetable drinks was a huge difference in the way I felt. I was energized and noticed a whole new level of feeling good. It was amazing! I had more energy during my workouts and found I had less cravings for foods that were not good for me.

All this from a green smoothie? Well, it turns out, what was happening was I was finally giving my body the nutrients it was looking for. I found that my body stopped looking for the things it was missing by asking me

for more food. My cravings for bad foods went away and my energy level went up. I felt great and today my waist size is smaller than it was in high school.

If you’re not getting enough vegetables in your diet, a green smoothie just might help. The point is to get creative and find a way to get those veggies into your diet. It will change not only how you feel, but how you look! Don’t get trapped into thinking you have to force feed yourself a side of steamed veggies at every meal. There’s a wide variety of vegetables and an even wider variety of

ways to prepare them. You’re bound to find something you like if you just try. The government recommends getting somewhere between 2 ½ - 3 ½ cups of vegetables per day (depending on your age, sex and activity level). I personally consume 3-4 times the recom-mended amount of vegetables per day (depending on the day). The funny thing about it is, I just had my physical a couple months ago and my doctor did not say to me, “Hey TK, you really need to ease up on those veggies.”

So this month, eat some more veggies and see if you don’t feel bet-ter. “You do not like them. SO you say. Try them! Try them! And you may.” I have a green smoothie recipe on my blog www.hereswhatido.com and some other recipes to get you started, so.... “Try them and you may I say!”

Would you like to learn how you can save $4,000 or more in 2011

on your Federal, State and Local Taxes by using existing tax codes to legally deduct your health insurance premiums AND all you qualified out of pocket (non-insured) medical expenses?

You may choose to bank the savings, or use all or a portion of your savings to purchase or subsidize existing medical insurance, life or disability insurance or even fund a retirement plan. This is a qualified medical reimbursement pro-gram that enables eligible small business owners to deduct 100% of federal, state, and FICA taxes for family medical costs. Each year, our Clients average $4,000 or more in savings. Key to these sav-ings is the ability to declare medical expenses as a business expense rather than a personal deduction.

Based on existing Internal Revenue Code, a small business owner who can demonstrate employable interest in the business can become eligible for an employee benefits program. All business filing types are eligible, includ-ing sole proprietors, partnerships, C- and S- corporations. With this plan, an independent sales agent, a trucker, a retail business owner, a tradesman or any other small business owner can legally deduct 100% of family medi-cal expenses. This includes all health and qualified long-term care insur-ance premiums, as well as out-of-pocket medical, dental, and vision costs.

Recent healthcare regulations imposed by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) can jeopardize your tax savings if you fail to comply. This Act dramatically affects the management of your medi-cal reimbursement Plan, and will require that you adhere to new regula-

tions and meet strict deadlines. For example, you must now report the cost of healthcare coverage on your employees’ W-2 Forms. You may allow adult children up to age 27 to remain on their parents’ health plan. You must provide appropriate paperwork if you hope to deduct expenses for over-the-counter medicines. These mandates already pose sig-nificant challenges to small business owners, and more challenges are on the way!

The plan I’m describing will protect your tax savings, ensure your compliance with ever-changing regulations, and reduce your workload. Our plan features the following valuable services:

Plan Administration – 100% deduction of all health insurance premi-ums, including long-term care and spouse’s disability policies, and 100% deduction of all uninsured medical, dental, and vision expenses. Significant reduction of federal, state, and self-employment taxes. Every feature of the program is designed to protect your tax savings. In addition, included in the low annual fee for this service are any modifications that may be required to address upcoming regulations.

Wage Payment & Tax Reporting – Reduce your workload and stay compliant with new and upcoming regulations. Let us manage your wage payment and tax reporting.

Industry-Exclusive Audit Guarantee – We will support and assist any enrolled Client who has adhered to our Plan procedures and parameters and has their employee benefits deduction challenged by the Internal Revenue Service. In addition, if all procedures were adhered to, the Plan administrator will assume financial responsibility for any penalty and/or interest resulting from an audit as it pertains to the plan. Our Audit Guarantee is far more robust than those of our competitors. We guarantee your entire Plan, not just the Plan documentation.

Many small business accountants do not offer this service because of the time and expense involved to research, prepare, file and be compliant. We welcome your accountants’ participation and involvement in deciding if this plan is good for you.

To find out if you qualify for this, please contact: Mark J. O’Donnell for a no obligation consultation at (877) 899-7447 or email [email protected] or go to www.abc-agency.com.

business spotlight

You’ve probably seen the brand and recognize the name “Marrokal” from television commercials and advertising throughout the county. Marrokal Design & Remodeling is a very successful remodeling company that offers everything from room additions to kitchen remodels, outdoor liv-ing rooms and whole house renovations. They’ve been featured recently on local television shows such as San Diego Living and during these interviews, you’ve probably noticed a face that you’ve seen here in San Elijo Hills. Steve Walton, Senior Design Consultant, lives here in San Elijo Hills with his wife Tatiana and their two little girls.

Steve is a very talented and accomplished designer with more than 23 years of professional expertise, specializing in the management of residential design. Steve has been with Marrokal for 14 years where he has played a key role in contributing to the company’s high ratings as one of the nation’s

highest-ranking companies in the remodeling industry. Steve has been hon-ored with multiple awards and featured in nationally syndicated magazines.

If you’re considering a remodeling project for your home this spring, you’ll definitely want to get to know Steve and the team at Marrokal. When you work with them, you have the benefit of a full service firm that provides the utmost in quality, service and integrity. With 30 years in business, they have the resources and the knowledge to ensure your project is done right. Because of smart planning and foresight, the company has continued to see double-digit growth even during these economic times. It’s always reassuring to know you have a solid company behind any project you begin. Just give them a call and they’ll be happy to talk with you to see if the project is a good match. They will meet with you in your home for the initial consult and you’ll also love their large design center where you can view a variety of materials and finishings.

Steve and Tatiana love living here in San Elijo Hills. They purchased their home in WestCliffe in 2002. They always loved the town concept and the design of the community - from the eclectic mix of time periods represented in the town square to the layout designed to connect people. Over time, they have met many different people here in the community. Tatiana has been very active volunteering at San Elijo Elementary in recent years and the girls have formed many friendships as well. San Elijo Hills has in many ways become that ‘small town’ the Waltons envisioned nearly 10 years ago.

Steve knows San Elijo Hills inside and out, which makes him a great resource. If you’re looking to create a new space, whether inside or outside of your home, spring is a great time to get started. Give Marrokal a call and, who knows, you could be enjoying your new space before summer arrives!
