• Women,children,servantsandslaveswereintegraltotheFrench&Britishmilitaries. Theytraveledwiththesoldierstocook,dolaundry,sew,&serveinhospitals.

• ToreducethenumberofIndiandissentersinPontiac'sWar,GeneralAmherstsuggestedgermwarfare-- givingsmallpox-infectedblanketstoIndiansatthesiegeonFortPitt.

• TheIndianstooksettlerscaptiveasameanstoreplacefamilymemberslostinconflictsandscarecolonistsfromtheirland. CaptiveswerereleasedaspartoftheTreatyofEaston,butsomeactuallychosetostaywiththeirnewIndianfamilies.

• Scalping wasusedbyFrench,EnglishandNativeAmericancombatants.Newspapers,diaries,journals,andotherperiodsourcesalldocumenttheseoccurrences.

• GeneralBraddock,mortallywoundedintheBattleofMonongahela,wasburiedinthemiddleofaroadinPennsylvania. HissoldiersthenmarchedovertheroadsotheFrenchandIndianswouldnotdiscoverthewhereaboutsofhisremains.

• GeorgeWashingtonwastheonlyrepresentativetoarriveinuniformattheSecondContinentalCongress--signalingthathewasreadytofightfortherevolution.

BenjaminFranklinandfirstpublishedinhisPennsylvaniaGazette onMay9,1754.

• ThecartoonappearedalongwithFranklin'seditorialaboutthe"disunitedstate"ofthecolonies,andhelpedmakehispointabouttheimportanceofcolonialunity.

• Duringthatera,therewasasuperstitionthatasnakewhichhadbeencutintopieceswouldcomebacktolifeifthepieceswereputtogetherbeforesunset.

• WhileoriginallythecartoonservedasawarningofwhatwouldhappenifthecoloniesdidnotuniteagainsttheFrenchthreat,iteventuallybecameasymboloffreedomanddemocracyduringtheAmericanRevolution.

decidedtopasstheProclamationof1763,attemptedtoendwestwardexpansioninorderkeepcolonistsclosertotheeastcoast.TheProclamationprohibitedsettlementwestofAppalachianMountains.

TheAftermath• ThisdebtbecamethesourceofmajorresentmentbetweenAmerican

colonistsandtheirEnglishleadersbackinBritain.– Englishleadersfeltthattheyhadprotectedthecoloniststhroughoutthe

war,andthatthefinancialandmilitaryhelptheyhadreceivedfromthecolonistsduringthewarwasunsatisfactory.

– Englishleadersalsobelievedthatcolonistsshouldhelppaydownthewardebt,sincetheyhadbenefitedfromBritain’sprotectionthroughout

– ManyEnglishleadersfurtherbelievedthecoloniesweredisorganized,andthattheyshouldbegovernedbythoseinBritain,withthecentralauthorityinLondon.

– Whensuchleadershipplansweresetinmotion,colonialresentmentofBritaingrew.Colonistsfelttheyshouldbeabletogovernthemselves,ratherthanbetoldwhattodofromacrosstheocean.

– TheFrenchandIndianWarhadshownthecoloniesthebenefitofuniting.Theyrealizedthattheycouldjointogetheragainstcommonfoes,thenextofwhomwouldbeBritain.

beforethearrivalofanycolonist.– ThosetribesthathadalliedthemselveswiththeFrenchwere

hatedbytheEnglish.– TheIroquoisConfederacy,whichhadalliedthemselveswith

Britain,faredonlyslightlybetter.– ThealliancequicklyunraveledandtheConfederacybeganto

crumblefromwithin.TheIroquoiscontinuedtocontesttheEnglishforcontroloftheOhioValleyforanotherfiftyyears;buttheywereneveragaininapositiontodealwiththeirwhiterivalsontermsofmilitaryorpoliticalequality.
