Greetings Astro families! It is hard to believe it’s al-ready September! Unfortu-nately, with us starting lat-er this year, I was not able to get the Bullying lesson August, as promised. I will instead be delivering that lesson this month! Since I have already talked to you about Bullying, I wanted to talk to you about another important concept, called Growth Mindset. If you’re unfamiliar with that term,

growth mindset refers to someone who believes their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work.

We want to encourage our students to have a growth mindset in order to create a love of learning and resili-ence as these are essential for great accomplishment. This differs from

the idea of fixed mindset, which re-fers to those who believe they are born with certain qualities that can-

not change. When students be-lieve they can get smarter, they under-stand that effort makes them stronger. Therefore they put in the time and hard work that leads to higher achievement. Think of it like exer-

cising your body; when you exercise your body, you build up your endur-ance and your muscles become stronger. It’s the same with your brain - when you exercise your brain

by taking on challenges, practicing to grow your intelligence, and using mistakes to make you better instead of letting it get you down, your brain gets stronger. Many teachers in our building have already created a growth mind-set environment in their classrooms. While we are working on it here at

school, we need your help to instill a growth mindset in your kiddos at home! It is important for you to mod-el a growth mindset for your chil-

dren. You can do this by showing them that you are excited by chal-lenges, see mistakes as learning op-portunities, and understand the value of practice and trying different strate-

The Nurse’s News

Meet our new teachers

Hello! My name is Miss Witt, and I am thrilled to join the life skills team at Grissom! I graduated from Ball State University with a degree in special education, intense inter-ventions this past May. I am origi-nally from Illinois, but I am excited to have set down roots here in Muncie. Summertime is my favor-

ite, and I spend many of my sum-mer days at the beach. I also am an extreme lover of coffee! I am very excited to be a part of the Grissom team!

Mr. Farr 5th grade teacher

I am a first year teacher that graduat-ed from Ball State University in May of this past year. I am one of the old-est (non-graduate school) to graduate Teachers College at 39. I am current-ly pursuing my Masters in Education as well. I have wanted to be a teach-er my whole life, yet life got in the way so I had to wait a little while. I am a resident of Muncie and originally from College Park, Georgia. In my spare time, I like to take road trips and col-lect baseball cards. A fun fact about me is that I am the oldest member of the Ball State Pride of Mid-America marching and pep bands as I was 36, 37, and 38 while performing and I play the sousaphone (wrap around tuba).
