The Hidden Face of Globalization
Globalization has helped countries to have an amazing development in
technology, science, communication, arts, and everything related to humans well
being. Globalization refers to the processes of international integration arising from
the interchange of world views, products, ideas, and other aspects of culture (Al-
Rodhan, 2006). For instance, with this interchange process people can easily find
products from other cultures in their own country. Unfortunately, globalization has
been disturbing countries in their economy, government, and socio-cultural
environments.
The globalization is considered to be a great help for less developed countries.
According to Collins (2010), it promotes economic development, more jobs
opportunities, competitiveness among different companies, and it lowers prices for
consumers. Nevertheless, people are not concerned about the aspects behind this
process. Since the purpose of globalization is to make bigger the international
market; people are more interested in material recourses than the social well-being
(La Cara Oculta de la Globalización, 2010)..
This global phenomenon has created an economic obsession. International
companies do almost everything in order to sell their products, and they are not
aware of the consequences of their plans (La Cara Oculta de la Globalización,
2010). They use powerful and influential advertisements with subliminal messages
to manipulate the mind of people. Obesity and overweight caused by junk food are
examples of the effects that the globalization has created.
Moreover, the government is not being benefited at all. The globalization
requires more competence between private organizations, and this creates a
weakness in government institutions. According to Scholte (2005), international
institutions such as the European Union, or the G8 replace national functions to
facilitate international agreement. This creates the privatization of public
organizations. As consequence, the international companies are controlling the
market of the countries, and poor countries are losing their autonomy.
The socio-cultural environment is being affected as well. As product of the
international market, the globalization is creating a consumerist culture where
people confuse happiness with material resources. Life styles have changed due to
the consumption, and personal and cultural values has been affected as well (La
Cara Oculta de la Globalización, 2010). The interest of getting wealthier has
creating a big addiction of consumption, and people often forget values like
humility, and generosity. This has created problems such as drug trafficking,
violence and delinquency (La Cara Oculta de la Globalización, 2010).
In conclusion, Globalization is also a process difficult to control. As result of this
process, developed countries are manipulating poor countries, the government
autonomy is disappearing and idiosyncrasy, and the culture of the countries has
been altered and globalized.
