We burst into the Hippodrome’s third season with a line-up that reads like a directorial dream-team… Scorsese, Spielberg, Campion, Minnelli, Kubrick, Bigelow, Hitchcock, Almodovar, Tarantino, Gilliam, Mendes. All these movie heavy-weights are assembled in this programme with films ranging from costume drama to war film, musical to historical epic and comedy to thriller. And if you want to discover a maestro of the future, the science-fiction drama 'Moon' by first time director Duncan Jones is definitely one to watch.

This half-term don’t miss the brand new Disney/Pixar release 'Up' and our very popular Saturday morning screenings of great films that youngsters will love just as much as you will – including some Marx Brothers, some Judy Garland and a bit of Michael Jackson!

November sees the national St Andrew’s Day celebrations which mark the finale to Homecoming Scotland 2009 and the Hippodrome is joining in with a mini-season of titles starring all things Scottish on celluloid – whether it be a glimpse of the iconic Forth Rail Bridge in

'The 39 Steps', the Cumbernauld classic 'Gregory’s Girl' or the voice of Sir Sean Connery as a smooth-talking medieval dragon. Look out for associated offers, events and prizes.

Literary adaptations feature strongly this autumn so we have teamed up with the independent Bo’ness bookshop Inkspot & Silverleaf for an exclusive discount for Hippodrome patrons. Meanwhile Falkirk Council Libraries are launching a film of the book discussion group at Bo’ness Library with this season’s title: ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’.

Big Roman Week comes to Bo’ness in September with an Italian market and lots of special events including a screening and talk at the Hippodrome with the ever-popular archaeologist Geoff Bailey plus a big screen outing for the swords and sandals epic 'Spartacus'. If classic horror is more your thing, do Halloween at the Hippodrome with the genuinely chilling original version of 'Cat People'… and the kids needn’t miss out on the scary stuff either because we have a Jeely Jar Halloween showing of 'Casper' – the friendliest ghost you could hope to meet.

And finally, announcing the Hippodrome’s audio description service for blind or partially sighted people. The normal film soundtrack comes through our surround sound speakers in the usual way and, audible only to you on personal headphones, a recorded narrator explains what’s happening on screen. It’s similar to listening to a football match on the radio – having the action described to you – but with added surround sound which places you in the middle of the action. Look out for titles marked AD in the programme and pick up the headphones from Hippodrome staff.

Coco Before Chanel Audrey Tautou (‘Amelie’) plays the legendary Coco Chanel in the fascinating story of one woman’s rise from humble beginnings to worldwide fame as the most celebrated fashion designer of the 20th Century. Young Gabrielle Chanel, illegitimate daughter of a travelling salesman, learns to sew in a Catholic orphanage before her singing ambitions lead her to a cabaret club. It is here that Chanel earns the nickname Coco and where she catches the eye of several suitors who become instrumental in the development of her remarkable career.

Moon This debut feature directed by David Bowie’s son (formerly known as ‘Zowie’!) is the clever and creepy tale of Sam, an engineer (Rockwell) who is nearing the end of his three-year solo contract on the moon, mining fuel for use on Earth. With his only connection to home via an unreliable videophone link, Sam is beginning to feel the strain and, as his mind starts to play tricks on him, Sam’s world takes a nasty turn. The Taking of Pelham 123 High octane remake from Tony Scott (‘Top Gun’) of the 1974 crime thriller with Denzel in the Matthau role and Travolta as the splendidly sleazy baddie who has high-jacked a New York subway train and is holding ransom its innocent passengers. The two leads spar brilliantly off each other and this updated version develops the links between the two men. With a professional hostage negotiator (Turturro) in the mix, mounting tension and well-staged stunt effects, this is a tightly-wound roller-coaster ride.

The Proposal A likeable and accomplished romantic comedy from the director of ’27 Dresses’… When high-powered tyrannical executive Margaret (Bullock) faces deportation to her native Canada she promptly invents an engagement to her long-suffering assistant Andrew (Reynolds). Reluctantly agreeing to the charade the put-upon fiancé is obliged to take his hard-nosed boss to meet the family in Alaska where Margaret finds herself at odds with the way of life. The Hurt Locker An intensely gripping portrayal of the team of elite soldiers who disarm bombs in violent “post-conflict” Iraq, directed by Kathryn Bigelow (‘Point Break’, ‘Near Dark’) demonstrating again her flair for sheer physicality. James behaves as if he's indifferent to death and as the men struggle to control their wild new leader, the city explodes into chaos.

Broken Embraces ‘Broken Embraces’ brings together dark melodrama and comedy in a passionate story charting a love-affair that unleashes violence and ultimately tragedy. Ravishing and stylish, Almodovar’s tale of desire, power, duplicity and fate pays loving homage to the films noirs of the 1940s and stars his favourite leading lady, the magnificent Penelope Cruz, as an actress struggling to escape the suffocating constraints of the aging millionaire lover who has supported her career. A joy to watch!

St Andrew’s FestivalThe Hippodrome is proud to present a long weekend of films for national St Andrew’s Day, part of the celebrations marking the finale to Homecoming Scotland 2009.

The five titles are not intended as a ‘top-five Scottish films’ list but instead invite playful glimpses of Scottishness – whether real or imagined. Each, in its own way, shines a spotlight on something we hold dear… whether it be a local century-old fair tradition, the internationally recognised Scottish landmark that is the Forth Bridge, “what’s it called?... Cumbernauld!”, or the man that is almost a Scottish institution in his own right – Sir Sean Connery!

To make the season extra special we have put together some special ticket deals and prizes. Look out for more associated events and offers.

The Best Day of the Year: 100 Years of the Bo’ness Children’s Fair Back by popular demand the story of 100 years of the Bo’ness Fair – Louis Dickson’s digitised archive film footage interspersed with fascinating personal stories and recollections of the Fair dating back to the 1940s, alongside interviews with people involved in the preparations leading up to the 2007 Fair.

St Andrews Prize Draw: All people purchasing tickets for this screening will be entered in to a prize draw to win a DVD copy of ‘The Best Day of the Year’ including a bonus DVD compilation of Fair films from 1912-1960.

The 39 Steps Richard Hannay flees to Scotland (look out for the iconic train journey across the Forth Bridge) in pursuit of the group of spies who left a dead counter-espionage agent in his flat. St Andrews Prize Draw: All people purchasing tickets for this screening will be entered in to a prize draw to win one of four sets of family tickets on the Bo’ness and Kinneil Steam Railway Black Bun Special, with on-board refreshments including the traditional Hogmanay Black Bun (30th – 31st Dec 09).

Big Roman WeekTo mark the birthday of Emperor Antoninus Pius - who built his Roman frontier from Bo’ness to Old Kilpatrick – Bo’ness is host to a series of events to celebrate our rich Roman heritage. The Hippodrome is proud to be part of Big Roman Week in Bo’ness…

The Antonine Wall with Geoff Bailey (Archaeologist) In 1960 Anne Robertson of the Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow, made an amateur film showing a walk along the Antonine Wall. Almost 50 years on, this film is a unique record not only of the Roman Wall but of the surrounding landscape at that time. Since then, for example, Bonnybridge Power Station has been demolished. Renowned, local archaeologist, Geoff Bailey, will provide an entertaining historical commentary on the film.

I Know Where I’m Going Joan Webster (Hiller) is determined to have the finer things in life and plans to marry for money. En route to the fictional island of Killoran, where her future husband resides, Joan is stranded on nearby Mull by bad weather. Unable to reach her destination, Joan falls for the charms of the island and of naval officer Torquil McNeil (Livesy), the true laird of Killoran. Famously featuring the Corryvreckan whirlpool this British classic prompted Martin Scorsese to say, “I reached the point of thinking there were no more masterpieces to discover, until I saw ‘I Know Where I'm Going’”.

C Cuppa screenings Café opens at 10:30 for tea/coffee and cake. Screening starts at 11:00. Ticket price £4.75 includes refreshments. £2.50 for film only.

B Baby Friendly screenings start at 11:00. Bring your baby free (up to 18 months) and enjoy the film without worrying about any noise your wee one may make. All tickets £3.75

J Jeely Jars start at 11:00. All tickets £2.00. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. In the Hippodrome’s heyday youngsters could get their cinema ticket in exchange for a jeely jar. We have named our Saturday morning screenings of well-loved family films and kids’ classics in honour of this tradition. Once a season we’ll give you the chance to revive the custom (see below).

Look out for the Jeely Jar Special** when you can bring a clean jeely jar with matching lid and get two tickets for the price of one. The jars will be re-used for jam-making in the Georgian Kitchen at Callendar House. But please note: don’t bring a jar every week, we can’t make that much jam!
