P.C.S.O.s COME INTO CLASS

P.C.S.O.s in our class at school

BY ZAIN

Over the past few weeks we have been learning much about the commu-

nity and on one particular day in the ranger project we talked to a P.C.S.O. They took us to the police station and they gave us

CLASS GO TO THE POLICE STATION

BY CAMERON A

On the April 21st

2010, we

had our first Community

ranger lesson. Two

P.C.S.Os came in to the

class. They spoke to us

about all the deferent

things in the police sta-

tion. Such as radios,

hand cuffs, note books

and Tazors. They also

spoke to us about the uni-

forms. They ware epau-

lettes. Black ones if they

are police officers, and

blue if they are just police.

They also ware stab

vests, they are heavy be-

cause they are bullet

proof. Then everyone

tried one on. It was fun!

Our class at the police station

a tour around the police station. We saw the D.O.T. team, the ser-geant’s room and the break room and we got to see all the vehicles that the police used. Then we went to the briefing room and then taken back to the lunch room and then the next group went then we talked to a fellow P.C.S.O We played a game where we all had to come up with a fact other-wise you’re out then the second group came back and then we had to go back to school. I really enjoyed going to the po-lice station and I learned that police take their job really seriously

ROMAEO REPORTS:

On 28 April Hogarth Primary School we visited

the police station in the afternoon and we went in and

talked, and look at where were the police officers cars

are kept. We looked at the briefing room and there was

a jeep which was a 4 by 4 car. Also we looked at the

stolen bikes, the lockers and lunch room. You have to

keep quiet because police offices are working and it’s

important they get their job done. I like the police station

because you can have a knife vest.

The police take their job seriously.

KIERA REPORTS:

It has made me think more about what the police’s job is mainly about.

Before I knew quite a bit but I can’t say how. Now after the P.C.S.Os came in and we

had that trip I understand more and to respect their hard work. That day it changed me

by knowing it is quite fun being a P.C.S.O and a P.O but it is hard and has down sides

to it so I will respect it more.

BODY IMAGE WITH SONYA BY KIERA On Wednesday 26

th May

2010 in the afternoon a

lady called Sonia came in.

She came in with a bag

full of magazines and

newspapers.

When the lesson started

she talked to us talked to

us body image, at first

everyone was a bit con-

fused. But, as she talked

to us more about it we

started to understand it

more.

She got out all the maga-

zines and newspapers

then, she got us to look at

the people who are celeb-

rities and models in the

magazines and newspa-

pers and them cut people

out of it. Once we cut out

all the people we wanted

to cut out we asked round

the other tables if they

had finished with what-

ever they had on their ta-

ble and did a swap if they

had finished with it then,

did what we did with the

other magazines and

newspapers we had last

time.

After about half-an-hour

later Sonia stopped us.

Then for about ten min-

utes we stuck the people

we cut out onto a big

black piece of sugar pa-

per so we made a collage

on it. But, since people

had cut out so many fig-

ures we had to get a sec-

ond sheet of Black sugar

paper.

At the end she talked to

us more about Body Im-

age stuff like, to be proud

of your body and not to

care about how other

people are compared to

you and what they think.

So today we learned not

to be sad about our own

image but to be proud

and so should everybody

as well as us so if you see

someone who is upset

about their own image en-

courage them to be proud

about it.

Sonya talking about body image BY SHARDAY On Wednesday 19 May 2010 we made smoothies with Sonia. We could choose what we wanted in them. We had four dif-ferent kinds of juice loads of fruit and tinned fruit. We had apples, ba-nanas, grapes, strawber-ries, tinned fruit such as pineapple and mango. We had four kinds of juices, pineapple, apple, orange and banana.

We had two smoothies the first one we made had more fruit in. The people who didn’t like the

smoothie had fruit instead. E v e r y o n e chose what fruit went in. We didn’t put anything ex-tra in them

like sugar because the fruit was naturally sweet. Nearly everyone liked the

smoothies. We all had a

good time. KHIA REPORTS:

Class 10 has been going out and has had some people coming in to talk. In week 26

th May

2010 a lady called Sonia came in to talk about Health. She gave us a selection of magazines and newspapers. We had to cut out all the pictures of boys and girls that we liked. Because we were finding out everyone’s shape and size and noticing that we are all different. We had pictures of people who were tall, small, fat and thin. When we had all finished cutting out we tided up our mess. Then we got all our pictures and glued them, and table after table, we stuck our pictures on a big black poster that was stuck onto the bored. Sonia got some laminated

things out her bag such

as c r i sp packe ts ,

McDonald’s boxes, 7up

bottles and lots more. In

the bottle it showed how

much sugar was used

and with the other ones, it

came in a labelled

container to show how

much sugar it contained.

NYLE REPORTS:

Four weeks ago on Wednesday the 26

th of

May we learned about body image with a lady called Sonia. She asked us to cut stuff out of m a g a z i n e s a n d newspapers about people and their body shapes. We put them on a piece

of black card, we could

see lots of people fat

ones, thin ones, small

ones and tall ones. We

mad a big poster we

looked at the people and

Sonia talked to us about

the people. So we know

that our own body is fine

and we don’t need to

change it.

SHANNON SPEAKS:

On the 19th May a

lady called Sonia came

and made smoothies with

us. Everyone had a really

good time. We had lost of

ingredients which were:

Apple

Orange

Grapes

Bananas

peaches

pineapple juice

strawberries

different juice

T h e s e w e r e t h e

ingredients we used for

the smoothtackstick

smoothies. And then we

tasted them. Then Sonia

stared to tell us about

healthy eating and how u

should avoid fat and

snack food and to try and

do your 5 a day like fruit

and vegetables and not

eat fat and not chips.

OUTSTANDING ORIENTEERING AND OUR FOOD MILES

Steve Doughty from the Park Rangers

BY EMILY On Wednesday 5

th May

class 10 had a visit from Steve, a park ranger. He told us about what he does for a living. He works in lots of different parks around the St. Ann’s planting new seeds, this is called orienteering. These are some of the parks he works in Mar-mion Park, King Edward

Park, and Colwick Park. Later On in the afternoon, Steve took our class out-side and we were put into groups. He gave each group two pieces of pa-per, one with a picture of our school on and another with numbers from 1 to 20. We had spaces to write down what fruit it was, the country it came from and how many miles

it travelled before it ar-rived at England. He also gave us a pencil and a clipboard. We had to look on our

sheet which had the map

on and it had numbers on

different parts of the map

like for example the shel-

ter or the tree or maybe

the pavilion. After looking

at that we looked at

where it says number 1

then we went there. We

wrote on our other sheet

what fruit it was, what

country it was from and

how many miles it trav-

elled before it came to

England. And so on until

we got to 20. When we

had finished he took us all

inside and we did a word

search and a quiz. Then

he told us what will be

happening the next week.

Next week we are going

to make recycled instru-

ments…

fore that we either put rice

or pasta inside the instru-

ments to give them

sound. Then it was time

to decorate. There were a

few to choose from:

Glitter

Sequins

Foil

As soon as someone fin-

ished, they started experi-

menting with their instru-

ments. Near the end of

the day, when everyone

was just about finished,

everyone gathered round

two tables and Ms Carrow

took a picture of us and

our instruments. Then,

when it came to time, we

were allowed to take our

musical instruments

home.

BY HANNAH On Wednesday, 12

th May,

Ms Carrow came in to talk

to us about recycling. A

few minutes later, Ms

Carrow said next week

we could make instru-

ments out of recycled ma-

terials such as cardboard

boxes, yogurt pots, tubes

etc.

During the week after, Ms

Carrow came back into

Hogarth with lots of bags

full of recycled things.

Everyone immediately

started making instru-

ments. First they selected

their recycled things then

took them to their desk.

Then they started joining

them together with glue

and sticky tape. But be-

PARK RANGER: ORIENTEERING

BY ADAM F On Wednesday 5th May

2010 Jane Caro came in

and she told us there was

a park ranger outside set-

ting things up. Then he

came in and told us his

name [Steve]. He told us

what he does and where-

abouts he works. Then he

gave us a word search

and tried to find as many

words as possible in, 10

minutes. After that he said

what we were doing next.

He told us we were going

to find cards and write

everything onto a paper

and, copy of the card. Af-

ter we did 6 we had to get

the other map and do the

other 6. Then we came

inside and talked about

the different foods, and

where they came from

and how many miles

they’ve travelled and what

the food was. We talked

about what we were doing

the next week and we had

to bring food boxes and

bottles to school, to make

recycled musical instru-

ments. I really liked run-

ning around and copying

the cards.

PARK RANGERS VISIT – RECYCLED MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

BY DILLON

O n the 12th May

2010, we made

m u s i c a l

instruments out of

recycled equipment. It all

started when a park

ranger called Steve came

into school, to talk about

parks. Then, on the 12th

May 2010, we made

musical instruments.

We could bring our own

recycled equipment, if

some people didn’t bring

their own equipment they

could have someone

else’s equipment or we

could have the equipment

that Steve brought. We

could make any musical

instruments like :

drums [ which I made ]

guitar

shaker

We could also make our

own musical instruments.

When the time was over

t o m a k e m u s i c a l

instruments, we had to

see and listen what other

musical instruments

people made! After that,

we put all the musical

instruments all together to

make the Hogarth

orchestra, we took photos

of the Hogarth school

orchestra!

EMILY REPORTS:

For the past few

weeks we have been

taking part in a project

c a l l e d c o m m u n i t y

rangers.

I asked this question: Do

you enjoy community

rangers?

The whole class says yes.

Thanks-you Jane for

organising it.

ABBI REPORTS:

The Park Ranger, Steve Doughty, came to

Hogarth and gave us a map. There was a code

on the map with different numbers for different places in

the school grounds. Steve had put a card at each of the

places which showed a picture of a food item and how

many miles it had travelled to get to our country. I

worked with my friend and we had to find the right food

on the map. The food that was the furthest away in the

school ground was an orange and it came from Spain.

I enjoyed it when I was with my friend and we went with

our numbers on our map, and we went to find the food

what we had on our map. I enjoyed doing Community

Rangers very much, it was fun!

YEAR 5 GO TO NOTTINGHAM CASTLE

Year 5 at the taking a picture at the Robin Hood statue

about what they thought

of Nottingham Castle.

I asked David, Emily,

yes.

After that I asked “What

did you enjoy the most

about it?” David, Emily

the view when we went

on the top of the building.

Then I asked them,

“Would you go again?”

Emily, Shannon and

Saskia said yes. David

said no but he couldn’t

say why!

MY LIFE IS CHANGED

BY DILLON In Community Rangers we’ve been learning about and going into places in our community. We all like Community Rangers because, we all get to meet different peo-ple in the community, community rangers has changed peoples lives,

they get to visit good places that they have never discovered. If Community Rangers ever come to your school it will be fun, believe me. It’s a good opportunity to change your life! DO IT NOW! OUR COMMUITY IS A GOOD PLACE TAKE USE OF IT!

COMMUNITY RANGERS – HAS IT CHANGED ME?

BY KIERA This article is all about what we did for Commu-nity Rangers and how it changed us through the weeks, my answer is it has changed us quiet a bit, here are some of the examples. Police – It has made me think more about what the police’s job is mainly about. Before I knew quite a bit but I can’t say how. Now after the P.C.S.Os came in and we had that trip I understand more

and to respect their hard work. That day it changed me by knowing it is quite fun being a P.C.S.O and a P.O but it is hard and has down sides to it so I will respect it more. Park Ranger – At first I didn’t know anything about park rangers but, after James came in he talked to us about his job and what we can do to help the park rangers. We got to understand more about what they did and how many park areas

they do. But altogether it changed, me by under-standing that it’s not easy being a park ranger, but it’s a good job so I learned to help the park rangers by doing my bit of keeping it clean, and being nice. Out and about – In out and about we got to learn more things about the community and different activities in it. One of the things we got to see is the adventure park there were a lot of activities and things to play on there. But, the then it changed me by going out more and finding more things to do with the community. Health – I was only at

school for one of the

weeks where we did the

health topic when I was

there we did about body

image and a lady called

Sonia helped us to be

proud of our body and not

to care. So that how it had

changed me there and

then that day.
