Dear Readers

I wonder if, like me, you are wondering how many tickets you will be allocated for the Olympic Games next year? Also, I always look forward to this month as Wimbledon is once again looming, so plenty of excuses for sitting down with a bowl of strawberries to watch the action! Well, I might consider some work inbetween times too.

In this issue we continue to run helpful features from Surrey Waste about how to cope with food and garden waste - I know how easy it is myself to end up throwing away perfectly good food, and I guess I won’t be the only guilty one. We also have lots on being outdoors in the garden in this issue and continue with advice on hanging baskets courtesy of Pippa Greenwood on Page 44. Don’t forget Grace & Flavour updates on Page 15.

With our theme of supporting our charity of the year, there is lots going on at Dunsfold, the home of Surrey Air Ambulance that you need to know about, with their Open Day on 12 June and their first Double Bike Challenge with a chance to win a £1000 Chris Boardman bike - lots of info on Page 13.

Another Open Mic event is being held at West Horsley Village Hall on 5th June with opportunities for talented youngsters to appear in front of family and friends. Supper is also provided at an amazing cost and proceeds will go to the Surrey Air Ambulance, so please go along and support this event.

On 24th June St Lawrence Primary School are holding a Circus Show for the young ones and information on this in more detail is shown on What’s On, as is lots more information of theatre shows and local events.

We love to hear from readers telling us what they enjoyed in the magazine or telling us about forthcoming events, so please do contact us at: [email protected]

Whether you’re a keen gardener or just want to choose the greenest, most natural way to deal with your food and garden waste, composting is the perfect solution.

Grass cuttings, dried leaves, twigs and vegetable peelings are just some of the ingredients that can go into a compost bin or heap to make peat-free compost – ideal to use in potting or planting in your garden or allotment.

Getting started is easy. All you need is a compost bin or a small space in the garden to create a heap. Then just follow our easy guide to creating your own supply of natural food for your garden.

You can compost a wider range of materials in more specialist bins such as Green Cones and Wormeries. More information on website.

A step-by-step guide

1. Find the right site. Site your bin or heap on bare soil. If space is limited, put your bin on concrete, tarmac or patio slabs, but make sure there’s a layer of soil or existing compost on the bottom so garden creatures can colonise.

2. Add the right ingredients. Fill your kitchen caddy with the right ingredients such as tea bags, taking care not to compost cooked food, meat or fish.

3. Fill it up. Empty your kitchen caddy and your garden waste into your bin or heap. A 50/50 mix of greens and browns is the perfect recipe for good compost.

4. After 9-12 months. The ingredients you have put in your bin or heap should have turned into a dark brown, earthy smelling material at the bottom of the bin, which can be dug out, with the newer material being left. Don’t worry if your compost looks a little lumpy with twigs and bits of eggshells – this is perfectly normal. Simply sift out any bits and return them to your bin or heap.

5. Ready! Once your compost resembles thick, moist soil and smells very earthy, it’s ready to use.

6. Collect the compost. Instructions will be delivered with your bin. But simply lift the bin slightly or open the hatch at the bottom and scoop out the fresh compost with a garden fork or spade. If you have built your own, simply rake out the ready compost.

7. Use it. And watch your garden bloom. Compost can be used for all types of planting needs – vegetable plants for allotments; general potting (if mixed with something like ordinary soil); or flowerbeds and enriching new borders by mixing in existing soil.

Get startedTo find out more about how to build yourself a compost heap, or to buy a bin, starting from only £14.00 visit www.surreywastepartnership.org.uk or call 0844 571 4444. You’ll also find lots of other helpful tips and information there too.

Why compost?

Compost is a natural, nutrient-rich food product for your garden. It will help improve soil structure, maintain moisture levels, and keep your soil’s PH balance in check while helping to suppress plant disease. It will have everything your plants need including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and will help buffer soils that are very acidic or alkaline. Compost improves your soil’s condition and your plants and flowers will love it!

Home-made compost is peat-free which means it is good for the environment outside your garden too. It reduces the need to buy peat products, which have been commercially sourced and extracted from peat bogs, resulting in the release of the carbon stored in them.

Summer at WimbledonIt’s Wimbledon again, I’m feeling anxious, very fraught,The pressure’s on again, it always is, on Centre Court,The linesman has a guide dog and the umpire’s ninety three,My opponent’s using gamesmanship; it’s really bothering me,

He queries almost everything; we’re stuck again at deuce,The umpire is agreeing! What’s all this? The man’s obtuse,So many bad decisions, and so many dodgy calls,If he carries on, it won’t be me who needs some brand new balls,

Now it’s getting cloudy, and of course, here comes the rain,It seems that we’ll be heading to the changing rooms again,I’m thinking things can’t get much worse, and then, to my chagrin,As I scuttle off the court, I hear Cliff Richard start to sing…

Grace & Flavour, the community vegetable-growingco-operative at Dene Place, Ripley Lane

With the car park complete and just feet to go with the perimeter fence (deer and rabbit-proof), concentration at last returns to the garden itself at Grace & Flavour. The weeds have taken every opportunity to grow, so it’s a real balance between planting and weeding.Lovely reader, you have given me your attention so often here in The Horsley Directory – I thought you might like to hear another ‘voice’ – that of Head Gardener Pete, a volunteer like the rest of us. If you like what you read, perhaps you will pop down to the G&F garden on Ripley Lane one Saturday and join in the fun. Su

Our planting plan lists over 40 varieties, a significant number are vegetables for successional cropping over the coming winter. A list is posted in the Garden ‘kitchen’ and I am hoping to also get it added to our web site.

Almost all of the fruit trees received have been planted. Those that haven’t are destined for the landscape area in the allotments. The apples and pear trees have been pruned to Espalier them. This does look drastic as we have removed a significant amount of their growth but it is necessary to achieve the right shape and consequently good crops. We will be pruning the stone fruit (plums etc) to Fans as soon as we have the support posts and wire installed. Yes you’re right we shouldn’t prune stone fruit until summer because of the risk of disease (silver leaf, a fungus attack) but it’s OK as long as we seal all the cuts to prevent the fungus getting in.

The polytunnel was been disinfected and sulphur candles burnt to provide the clean conditions necessary for propagation. This includes disinfecting all seed trays and pots before use, only using fresh potting medium (soil based seed compost) and using fresh water not rain water. All of this is necessary to reduce the risks of disease to the seedlings at their very susceptible stage of growth. Our Asparagus bed has been planted with most of the hundred or so plants we planned. These are growing beautifully however we must not cut them this year but instead allow

the plants to fully establish themselves over 2 years. Next year we may cut a very, very, very few stems to check the flavour – it’s a rotten job but someone has to do it! After that the bed should be productive for 6 or 8 years providing we give it lots and lots of manure and keep it weed free. The Asparagus bed is behind the polytunnel but it stops 3 or 4m from the wall. We intend to fill this bed up to the wall next year (another 50 or so plants) but we first have to reduce the size of the Yew trees that are currently taking light and moisture. We have heavily pruned these Yew trees already and will complete the job in the Autumn.

The onions, garlic, peas and broad beans we planted outside in November are all growing very well.

We have also planted outside: 50Kg of Arran Pilot potatoes (first earlies); 50Kg Charlotte potatoes (second earlies); Shallots – 4 x 10m rows; Parsnips – 3 x 10m rows; Beetroot 2 x 10m row, so far; Carrots 2 x 10m rows, more later; Broad Beans (later crop) 6 x 10m rows; Mange Tout peas – 1 x 10m row, more to be planted; Blackcurrants; Raspberries – Autumn fruiting variety.

We also have, under glass; Cucumber - these have germinated and are doing well. We will soon have to prick them out into larger pots; Rhubarb – again these have germinated and have been pricked-out into 3” pots and are doing well. We are planning a 10m row which will hopefully satisfy Members needs in 2 or 3 years when they are ready for cropping. Same problem as with Asparagus I’m afraid; Cape gooseberry - an experiment. If successful and Members like them we will repeat in greater quantity next year – germinated and doing well; Tomato – small and standard size; Lettuce – 3 types; Melons, Runner Beans and French Beans.

That does not even include what John & team have planted on the Eastern (purely organic) half of the garden. It’s quite enough to be going on with!

There are two ways inwhich the tax system helpsin making gifts to charity. The first is for gifts on yourdeath, the second for giftsmade in your lifetime. TheBudget has provided a newrelief for gifts made by will.

Gifts to a charity are not subject toinheritance tax. In addition, from April2012, if 10% of the net estate on deathis given to charity then the inheritancetax rate on the rest of the estate willdrop from 40% to 36%.

If your estate is worth £1,000,000 and is left to your children, then, if you havemade no previous gifts of capital butwish to make a substantial donation toCharity a comparison of the old andnew rules is as follows:

Old RulesIf you died before April 2012 and gave£67,000 to charity in your will:

Estate 1,000,000Charity gift 67,500Exempt threshold 325,000Taxable estate 607,500Tax at 40% 243,000Your children get 689,500

New RulesIf you died after April 2012 and gave£67,500 to charity in your will:

Estate 1,000,000Charity gift 67,500Exempt threshold 325,000Taxable estate 607,500Tax at 36% 218,700Your children get 713,800

The result is that the children’s share hasincreased £24,300.We have not showedthe calculation but if no Charity gift hadbeen made at all the children would havereceived an additional £16,200.Theeffect of the new rules is that theCharity receives £67,500 at a cost ofonly £16,200 to the Estate.

This may make gifts to a charity by willmuch more attractive than lifetime giftsunder gift aid for all except the veryhighest-rate taxpayers. It may make itworthwhile deferring gifts in lifetime sothey can make up 10% of the net estateon death.

Similarly, the beneficiaries are often ableto alter the will (by a deed of arrangement) after death and they maychoose to make a charitable gift which isgoing to cost them a small part of whatthe charity will receive.

Working from homeIn Sickness and in Healthby Ted Bruning

Beingillissimplewhenyouworkinanoffice.Youjuststayathomeuntilyou’rebetter.Ofcourse,therearerefinements.Forexample:

It’s not so simple when you work from home, though, because work and home are the sameplaceand–ifyou’llpardonthemetaphysics–thesametime.Ifyou’reanofficeworkerwithasnufflethatlookslikeitcouldturnnasty, thenyoumakeadecisionataspecifictime–iethelastmomentyou can leave home in time to catch the bus –nottogotoaspecificplace–ietheoffice.Ifyouworkfromhomethenthattimedoesn’texist,andyou’realreadyinthatplace.

Sohowdoweworkers-from-homedecidewhenwe’re too ill togo towork?Well, thereare twooptions: (a) when we’re genuinely too ill to getoutofbed, and(b)whenwe’renotreallythat illbut there’snothing vital todo. These two statesofill-healthcorrespondexactlytothosethatkeepofficeworkersathome;it’stheprocessofdecidingexactlywhenoneortheotherhasbeenattainedandthenactingonitthatislesswell-definedandthereforemoreproblematicalforusworkers-from-home. You have to be really, really (a) or really, really (b)before youadmit that you’re far too illtocrankupthePC.(Andyes, it ispossibletobereally, really(b),althoughitfeelsmorelikeapathythanillness).

Then there’s guilt. If you’re an office-worker,there’sasimplepieceofpoliticalphilosophythatcanutterlyzapemployeeguilt:it’scalledMarxism.All value is labour, saysKarl: the valueof goodsand service precisely equates the labour thathas gone into them. Capitalists become rich byappropriating most of the value of the workers’labour;soeverymomentyouspendatworkyou’rebeing robbed. By calling in sick, you keep yourmiserlyshareofthevalueofyourlabour–without

actuallysurrenderingthelabouritself.Sothrowingasickieisacrimepreventionmeasureandablowforsocialjustice.Don’tfeelguilty,feelproud!Butifyou’reself-employedthenyouarebothcapitalistand labourer, so whichever way you look at ityou’re robbing yourself. Again, don’t feel guilty:feelconfused.

ODE TO WILLIAM HAGUEWhether you take this ode as a compliment is up to you. It’s just something that’s there, and perhaps slightly surprising,Like suddenly seeing your portrait painted on a boulderOr tattooed on the rear end of a pig.

Fresh, modern colours and a vintage vibe contrast beautifully with Georgian architecture. Victoriana bedstead, £299 and Crochet rug, £250;

Marks & Spencer (0845 302 1234; www.marksandspencer.com)

Unexpected and individual, unique andenvironmentally friendly, well-made andtimelessly appealing – how does this

sound? Whether we’re talking vintage, retro,antiqueor,erm,justplainold,thereareheapsofgoodreasonswhyaddingawell-chosenselectionof ‘mature’ furnishings toany roomschemecanbe enormously successful. Old pieces make astatement, haveafascinatinghistoryandarebuiltto last. The quality of old pine, for example, isvastly superior to that of new pine (and a nicercolour, too), and old mirrors are much moreflattering. What’s more, including even just oneantique piece in an otherwise-modern room willaddtextureandsubtleindividuality.

But just how do you combine old with new, contemporary with classic? Especially when theaimistobebothgood-lookingandpractical,withalookthatwon’tgooutoffashioninthenextfiveminutes.

As with all interiordesignschemes,it’sbesttostartbyassessingyourroom. Measure it anddraw a plan, markingin such key elements aswindows, doors, built-in cupboards, radiators, lightfittings, plussocketsandsoon.Doyouneedto make any structuralchanges?Ifso, now’sthetime. If the structure isfine, consider the room’ssizeandshape, andwhetheritsarchitecturalstylewill affect theway inwhichyoudecorate.Workoutwherefurniturewillgo,andwhetheryouhavetoomuchortoolittleofit.Nowyouhaveagoodideaofwhattypeofthingsyou’llneedtolookoutfor–whether you’replanninga trip to thehighstreet, a charity shop, car boot sale or auctionhouse.

Thenextimportantprincipleistoconcentrateontimeless designs. If it’s well designed, whateverera itdates from, itwillworkwithotherpieces.

Another good rule is to keep floors, walls andwoodwork neutral. They won’t date and, moreimportantly, won’t clash with your one-offfurnishings.Onasimilarnote,avoidhavingmorethan one, or perhaps two, ‘statement’ pieces inaroom.Whenyouhavechosenapiecethatyoureally love, you can build a scheme around it. Itcouldbeachaiselongue,alamporahand-madevase – try to complement its characteristicswithotherkeypiecesandtoprovideapleasantcontrastwith others. It’s a subtle one, this. Too muchcontrivedmatchingandtheroomwilllookforced;too many contrasting elements and it will lackcoherence.Itallcomesdowntoacombinationofinstinct and trial and error – just keep on tryinguntileverythingfeelsright.

Colourcanbeanexcellentally, drawingtogetherdisparate items so that they co-ordinate well. Itcould be that you re-upholster an old armchairand choose co-ordinating cushions for a newsofa, adding in a picture with elements of thesamecolour, oravaseinacomplementaryshade.

1. If you’re travelling with a group of friends orfamily, plan well ahead (ideally 12 monthsplus),aslargerpropertiesbookupearlier.Alsothinkaboutwhetheryou’recompatible:Samebudgets?Activityvs.lyingbythepool?Sharingakitchen?Ifyou’renotsure,aclusterofsmallerindividualpropertiesmaybeabetterbet.

3. Theyoungeryourchildren, themoreattentionyou should pay to the property itself. You’llprobably be spending more time at theproperty than you would with older kids somakesureit’sthekindofplaceyou’rehappytospendagoodchunkoftimein.

4. Askfriendsforrecommendationsofcompaniesthat they have used or properties they’vestayedin.

5. When reading reviews, go for the groundedmiddle view. There will always be detractorsandexcitablecheerleaders.Thereviewsinthemiddlearelikelytobethemostaccurate.

6. Pick up thephone. By talking to someone –rather than just lookingonline -youcanaskmore questions to ensure the place you’reconsidering genuinely does suit your familyrequirements.

7. Take advantage of extra services at theproperty to give yourself a proper break. Ahome-cookedmealdeliveredtoyourdoororababysitterforacoupleofhourscanmakeanenormousdifferencetohowrefreshedyouwillfeelafterwards.

8. January is peak summer holiday bookingseason. Don’t faff! Availability changes houronhoursoavoiddisappointmentbymakingaswiftdecisiononceyouhavethefacts.Ifyouneed weeks in July and August, this is evenmoretrue(thepeakbookingseasonforschoolsummerholidaysisDecembertoFebruary).

9. There’s little or no truth in the ‘last minutebargainholiday’ ideawhen it comes topeakweeks in the summer. Availability is verylimitedand youwill be scratchingaround tofind something that suits - flights/ferries aremoreexpensiveandcarhireislimited.

10.Pay by credit card so that your purchase issecure.
