INTRODUCTION
TheLanguageA:EnglishLiterature course,offeredatbothHigherandStandardLevels, isdesigned tomeet theneedsof studentsforwhomEnglish isnormally theirbest language,or thosewhocommunicate effectively in English. The study of literature isthemain focusof this course,which includesaworld literaturecomponent.
IBEnglishprovidestheopportunityforstudentstoexamine,discussandcomparetheideasandlanguageofawidevarietyofwritersfromdifferenttimesaswellasfromavarietyofculturesacrosstheglobe.
Aswell aspresenting ideas inwriting, students taking the coursewillbeexpected tocontributeand listensympathetically to ideas instimulatingclasssessionswherediscussion,debateandpresentationplayanessential role.During the course, students shoulddeveloptheir ideas,knowledgeandenjoymentof literary themes, conceptsand language.They shouldalsodevelop theability to examineand
express ideaswith confidence inavarietyof contexts. Studentsachievementswillbeassessedthroughacombinationofwrittenandoralcourseworkaswellasbywrittenexamination.
COURSE DETAILS
Higher Level: Inaddition to the fiveworld literature texts, studentsstudyeighttextsembracingprose,poetryanddrama.TheHigherLevelcourse isbothstimulatingandenriching,but isalsouncompromisinglydemanding. Before considering entry, students should possess avoraciousappetite for literature, combinedwitha capacity forhardwork.
Standard Level: Inadditiontothefourworldliteraturetexts,studentswill study six texts embracingpoetry,proseanddrama.This course isdesigned fornon-specialists, andwhile studentswillpractice the sameskillsasthoseencounteredatHigherLevel,itwillbelessdemanding.

COURSE ASSESSMENT
Higher Level & Standard LevelsPart 1: (externally assessed) 20%SL -A studyof twoworks in translation, assessedbyonewrittencourseworkassignment.HLAstudyof threeworks in translation,assessedbytwowrittencourseworkassignments.
Part 2: (Internally assessed, externally moderated) 15%SL-detailedstudyoftwoworksfromdifferentgenres,assessedbyaformaloralcommentaryandaninterview.
HLdetailedstudyofthreeworksfromdifferentgenres,assessedbyaformaloralcommentaryandinterview.
Part 3: (externally assessed) 50%SL-study of a group of three works from the prescribed book list, assessed by a 1 hour written examinationessay.
HL studyof agroupof fourworks from theprescribedbook list,assessedbya2hourwrittenexaminationessay.
Both levelsalso takea secondexaminationpaper; this is a 1 or2hourwrittencommentarybasedonanunseenpassage.
Part 4: (internally assessed) 15%SLandHL - a studyof 3 texts,whichwillprovide thebasis forindividual10-15minuteoralpresentations.
All IBOcourseassessmentsare comprisedof an internal andexternalassessment. Internal assessmentsare carriedoutby the studentswithguidancebytheirteachers.Externalassessmentsarewrittenexams.

INTRODUCTION
TheLanguageA:ChineseLanguageandLiterature course,offeredatbothHigherandStandardLevelscombinesthestudyoflanguage,textsandculture.As21stcenturyglobalcitizensourstudentsneedameansofmaking senseof theworldaround them.This coursewillprovide theskillsneededtomakemeaningof, tocriticallyevaluate,andtobeeffectiveusersof,ourmodernandevolvinglanguageandmodesofcommunication.
Studentswillbechallengedwithabroadrangeof texts inavarietyofgenres; theywillbe lookingat languageand its connections toculture; the languageofmediaandmasscommunication;aswellascloseanalysisofliterarytextsfromarangeofgenres.
Afundamentalareaofskillsdevelopmentwillbeincriticalthinking-deconstructingimages,language,form,style,astheymovethroughapractical examinationof communicationandmeaningmaking.Thedevelopmentandrefinementofthefourprimarylanguageskillsof listening, speaking, readingandwritingarealso integral to theLanguageandLiteraturecourse.
COURSE DETAILS
Higher Level: Studentsstudyfouroptions,twoofwhichconcentrateonLanguageand twoonLiterature.TheLanguage sections includethe studyof language in cultural context aswell as languageandmass communication.For these sectionsof the course textswillbestudied fromavarietyof sources,genresandmediaandwillbestudied in relation to topics suchasgender, languageandpower,language and social relations, stereotypes, textual bias. For theLiterature components, three texts are studiedwithaparticularfocuson context anda further three texts areanalysed in the closecritical study section.TheseLiteraryoptions includeavarietyofprose,poetryanddramawithsomechosenfromtheprescribedlistofauthors,providedbytheIB,andsomefromaprescribedlistoftextsintranslation.
Standard Level: Students study four options, two ofwhichconcentrateonLanguage and twoonLiterature.TheLanguagesections remain the same as atHigherLevel. In theLiteraturecomponentsSLstudentsstudytwotextswithafocusoncontextsanda further two texts,both from theprescribed listof authors, for theclosecriticalstudy.

Paper 1: (External assessment) 25%SL - Textual analysis - 1 hoursThe paper consists of two unseen texts.Studentswriteananalysisofoneofthesetexts.HL-Comparativetextualanalysis2hoursThepaperconsistsoftwopairsofunseentexts.Studentswritea comparativeanalysisofonepairoftexts.
Paper 2: (External assessment) 25%SL - Essay 1 hoursIn response tooneof sixquestions studentswriteanessaybasedonboth the literary textsstudiedinPart3.ThequestionsarethesameatHLbuttheassessmentcriteriaaredifferent.HL-Essay2hoursIn response tooneof sixquestions studentswrite an essaybasedon at least twoof theliterarytextsstudiedinPart3.
Written Tasks 20%
SL - Studentsproduceat least threewrittentasksbasedonmaterial studied in the course.
Students submitonewritten task for externalassessment.Thistaskmustbe8001,000wordsinlengthplusarationaleof200300words.
HL - Studentsproduceat least fourwrittentasksbasedonmaterial studied in the course.Studentssubmittwoofthesetasksforexternalassessment.
Oneof the tasks submittedmustbea criticalresponsetooneoftheprescribedquestionsfortheHLadditionalstudy.
Each taskmustbe8001,000words in lengthplusarationaleof200300words.
Oral Component
Twooral activities are internallyassessedbythe teacherandexternallymoderatedby theIBO.
Individual oral commentary 15%
SLandHL -Students commentonanextractfroma literary text studied inpart 4 of thecourse. Students are given two guidingquestions.
Further oral activity 15%
SLandHL - Students complete at least twofurtheroralactivities,onebasedonpart1andonebasedonpart2ofthecourse.
Themark of one further oral activity issubmittedforfinalassessment.
All IBOcourseassessmentsare comprisedofan internal andexternal assessment. Internalassessments are carriedoutby the studentswith guidance by their teachers. Externalassessmentsarewrittenexams.

INTRODUCTION
AllLanguageBcoursesmeet theneedsofstudentswithsubstantialpreviousknowledgeof a second (or foreign) language inFrench,MandarinorSpanish.
