Moot Director’s Invitation

The prestigious International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot Competition [IMLAM] is a

competition for all law students worldwide.

I extend a warm invitation to all maritime arbitrators, maritime lawyers and other maritime

professionals to join us. You will help provide a ‘real world’ experience and valuable training to

the maritime lawyers of tomorrow.

Who takes part?

Each year upwards of 25 teams and more than 120 mooters compete, with oral competitions held

over 5 days in the first week of July. In 2019 the competition will run from 30 June to 5 July 2019.

What does it involve?

The moot problem typically involves a commercial shipping dispute, to be determined by an

arbitral panel according to the LMAA Terms or other equivalent rules. The problem is designed to

incorporate difficult but realistic issues of substantive maritime law in an arbitration context.

Each team prepares comprehensive memoranda in support of the Claimant and the Respondent

in the dispute. In the general rounds, each team argues twice for each side. The top scoring 8

teams proceed to a knockout final series culminating in the grand final.

Arbitrators sit in panels of three to hear each moot session. Arbitrators receive a kit, including a

guide to the issues. Arbitrators can volunteer to hear a single session, a full day or multiple

sessions over several days. The scoring system is simple and students are very appreciative.

Rotterdam in 2019

The venue for the competition moves between Europe, Asia and Australia. In 2018, the host was

the TC Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland, Brisbane. In 2019, our host will be the

School of Law, Erasmus University, Rotterdam. In 2020, the competition will be in Asia.

Our sponsors and supporters

The IMLAM Moot has been extremely well supported by maritime arbitrators, the judiciary, the

legal profession and maritime lawyers in Australia and Asia since its inception in 2000. MLAANZ

has been a staunch supporter of IMLAM throughout this time. Grand final panels have included

eminent jurists such as:

The Honourable Lord Phillips, former President of the Supreme Court of England;

His Honour Robert French, Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia (then a Federal Court judge);

His Honour Chief Justice James Allsop on multiple occasions, Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia;

His Honour Justice Joseph Fok of the Court of Final Appeal, Hong Kong;

The Rt. Hon. Lady Justice Elizabeth Gloster, Lady Justice of Appeal, Court of Appeal, England;

Her Honour Justice Judith Prakash, Judge of Appeal, Supreme Court of Singapore;

The Rt Hon. Lord Justice Nicholas Hamblen, Lord Justice of Appeal, Court of Appeal, England;

Her Honour Belinda Ang, Justice, Supreme Court of Singapore on multiple occasions;

Would you like to help?

With over 60 moots held during the course of 4 days, the success of the moot depends on the assistance of volunteer arbitrators. Volunteer arbitrators tell us that they find the event both enjoyable and fulfilling, and many return to assist in subsequent years.

We are always eager for additional volunteers to join us. If you think you may be able to assist, please see our website: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/School-of-Law/International-Maritime-Law-

Arbitration-Moot/ and register as a volunteer: http://www.murdoch.edu.au/School-of-Law/International-Maritime-Law-Arbitration-Moot/Registration-for-Arbitrators/ We would be delighted to see you at IMLAM!
