Would you risk everything - your future, your citizenship, even your life - to help a brother in need?
In 1948 a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czech-oslovakia and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. This ragtag band of broth-ers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and re-newed Jewish pride. Above and Beyond is their story.

Cover Up Rabbi Dovid Zirkind, Assistant Rabbi
In Parshat Terumah we are introduced to the Aron, its details and dimensions, for the very first time. While we might be quite familiar with the series of boxes, the poles and the keruvim, by far, the least impressive component of the Aron and the part most often overlooked was the Kaporet, the cover or lid which the keruvim were placed upon. Yet, despite its simplicity, this small lid actually hints at quite the powerful message. According to Ibn Ezra, the term Kaporet is a vari-ation of Kaparah or atonement. For that reason the Yerushalmi in Mesechet Shekalim (1:1) teaches that this cover of the Aron was intended to serve as an atonement for the sin of the Golden Calf. We might have expected the Mizbeach to atone for our sins, the Menorah, or the Aron as a whole, yet the Yerushalmi narrows in precisely on this thin, simple cover. What is the connection between atonement and coverage – between Kaporet and Kapparah? Ibn Ezra, in his translation cites the pasuk in Tehillim –"ְלָדוִד ַמְִיל ַאְֵרי נְי ֶַע ְסי ֲחָטה" (32:1)
“Happy is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.” When one repents for his mistakes and is forgiven, the sin is metaphorically covered, or placed out of sight. He argues that covering our mistakes is the equivalent to locking the door and throwing away the key. But the Freudian within us might think the exact opposite. Is covering our mistakes the best way to move forward? Interestingly enough, while Ibn Ezra views this verse positively, Malbim reads it quite different-ly. He says translates it as: “praiseworthy is the
one whose transgression is forgiven, for the cover-ing of sins.” Malbim argues that the sin is unfortu-nate, but worse than the sin itself is the cover up. Denial of sin, is a sin itself. Psychologically speaking, a balance between these two approaches seems healthiest. While we should aspire to putting our mistakes behind us, denying that they ever existed is both dishonest and counterproductive. Denial is the first step to relapse. For all of our regrets in life we have to balance our willingness to confront mistakes and the courage to live past them. This may very well be the symbolism of the Kapo-ret. If we cover ourselves in gold, if we deny that our sins ever took place, if we ignore the imper-fections that make us uniquely human, we prevent ourselves from growing in a healthy way. Indeed the Gemara in Succah observes that the cover of the Ark was the thinnest of the Mishkan’s objects, just a meager tefach thick. We must use the gold but not hide ourselves within it. The Kaporet is the cover to our sins, to the sin of the golden calf in particular, which the Jewish people so desperate-ly needed to escape. There is no measurement to thickness of the veil that covers our past. Each of us can dictate whether we will accommodate our missteps in a positive way or deny that they ever existed.
