Dear Colleague

It is my great pleasure to introduce myself and The London Book Fair to you. Here in the UK, we are very proud of our Creative Industries, with London being ranked as the world’s leading creative hub where a unique combination of strengths in media, culture and education coalesce. How fitting, therefore, that The London Book Fair takes place each year in this vibrant city as publishing, music, art, fashion, architecture, film, TV, brand licensing, gaming and advertising all rub shoulders with each other.

We believe LBF is the place to inform your thinking and make the contacts that will move your business forward. We’re very excited about our move to Olympia; an iconic building in the heart of the city. This London landmark has recently undergone a £30 million refurbishment to offer an even better LBF experience, with bigger, brighter and interconnected halls, filled with natural daylight. Olympia is ideally located in West London with superb transport links to Central London and beyond. Fantastic restaurants and bars are scattered around the city – perfect for winding down after a hectic day of exciting events and activities!

We look forward to meeting you there.

Jacks Thomas, Director, The London Book Fair

PS. Just as importantly, it’s fun too!

WE’RE ON THE MOVE!

The London Book Fair 2015 will take place at Olympia, London, from 14-16 April. The Fair is part of London Book and Screen Week; an entire week of activities across London between 13th and 19th April 2015.

Now in its 44th year, The London Book Fair is the global marketplace for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of content across print, audio, TV, film and digital channels. It returns in April to a brand new venue – Olympia in West London, for a Fair that covers all aspects of the industry.

A key part of the exhibition is the increasing number of tech players who explore the myriad of ways in which content can now be treated and delivered. So there are mobile companies, gaming start-ups and content-hungry tech companies. This is where you feel the zeigeist.

To walk its floors is to experience knowledge and story in all its forms. It is impossible not to be fascinated – and inspired.

The international reach is breathtaking. More than 60 countries regularly exhibit and there are around 1,700 exhibiting companies.

WHO EXHIBITS?

From very modest beginnings in the Berners Hotel near Oxford Street in 1971 as the Specialist Publishers’ Exhibition for Librarians, The London Book Fair – it took the name in 1977– has grown to be an essential part of the international book trade calendar. Today, the entire international publishing industry is represented, from the giant houses with which we are all familiar, to the smallest independent. There are the publishers of blockbuster novels and academic texts, and the producers of children’s books and graphic novels.

WHO VISITS?

Visitors include anyone who is involved with the creation, distribution, sale or treatment of content. Authors, talent scouts, editors, designers, digital gurus, all walk the floor, meeting, talking, observing, discovering. Typically, the Fair welcomes more than 25,000 professional visitors from more than 124 countries.

While much solid business is begun or concluded at the Fair (often both), what is just as important are the discussions that take place, the exchanges of ideas. For a sense of where the industry is and where it is going, The London Book Fair is essential.

The hall is arranged by sectors, rather in the way a giant bookshop would be. Thus children’s and YA are together, as are the academic and STM houses, and the technology exhibitors.

Technology continues to expand. Its many and varied incarnations now bracketed under Tech@LBF at the National Gallery, where everyone from app developers to games designers and digital workflow solutions are found.

Everything you need for your project’s content is located under one roof.

All sectors of the industry are covered at LBF, from mainstream publishers to specialised houses.

A FORMULA AND FORMAT THAT WORKSGENERAL PUBLISHING

There are over 300 exhibitors in this category and the same major names return every year, testament to a formula and format that works. Major international pavilions (over 25) are housed on both the ground floor and level 1, where the ever more important tech companies are found, now grouped together under Tech@LBF.

CHILDREN’S HUB

The Children’s Hub showcases and celebrates the best within children’s and YA.

The theatre is an open forum for case studies, demonstrations,

discussions and networking for all those working in children’s and YA publishing. Speaking slots are free and topics covered in the past include

interactive reading communities for young people, poetry for young children, and technology developments.

On the final day of the fair, the Author of the Day is always a children’s or YA writer, with previous writers including children’s laureate Malorie Blackman, Julia Donaldson/Axel Sheffler, Patrick Ness and Liz Pichon. The Author of the Day is interviewed in the PEN Literary Salon during the day.

Academic Publishing

An increasing number of academic publishers choose to exhibit at The London Book Fair. As technology becomes increasingly present in lecture theatres, technology’s role in academic publishing becomes ever more important. Academic houses are leading the way here, with every year bringing a new ‘edutainment’ initiative. There is arguably much their colleagues in mainstream publishing can learn from them and this is the place to do it.

There is no doubt about it – the advent of the digital age shook the world of analogue formats to the core. But with that shift came a world of possibility, and as new content-hungry audiences look to engage in more ways than ever before, we are only starting to scratch the surface.

Take the storyworld behemoth that is The Lord of the Rings. One Does Not Simply read Tolkein’s trilogy – for fans in their millions, the world of Middle Earth permeates everyday life with new ways to interact through film, games and a universe of licensed products.

The concept of a storyworld is familiar territory for publishers: after all, a good book is greater than the sum of its parts, a natural candidate for adaptation in other formats. The question is, how?

In answer to that question, LBF brings together the cutting edge innovators from the worlds of gaming, apps, graphic novels, brand licensing, film and TV and provides a home for them within the world’s premier publishing event. Here we provide a forum to exchange ideas and establish new contacts, exploring all the ways IP can be exploited and enhanced.

Gaming@LBFGaming@LBF was born out of publishing’s desire to understand and better connect with the video game industry. New for 2014, we hand-matched games creators with like-minded publishers through a series of bespoke networking sessions and educational seminars. At LBF 2015, the bigger and better Gaming@LBF will include a dedicated demo theatre, a larger meeting space and an expanded content programme.

Graphic Novels@LBFLaunching at LBF 2015, the inaugural Graphic Novels area will feature a comprehensive showcase of properties available in this rapidly growing space, with dedicated talks as part of the Insights Programme.

LBF@MIPJUNIORLBF took its first publisher delegation to Cannes in October 2014, offering a great deal to attend the premier rights and preview events for the Film & TV worlds. On top of preferential admission, the attendees had the opportunity to participate in bespoke matchmaking, networking and speaking events.

Insights ProgrammeThe massive Insights Programme at the Fair includes a dedicated Crossmedia seminar stream that offers our clients the opportunity to get on the inside track of new media, with high profile industry experts offering gems of wisdom that are equally educational, practical and inspirational.

“This event kicked ass. I saw more people in one afternoon than I could have done in months of

research, phone calls and emails. I came away with lots of things I want to do and

people I want to follow up with. I’m already looking forward to the 2015 edition”

BOOKSELLING AND BEYOND…

Bookselling & The Emporium

The Emporium is aimed particularly at bricks and mortar booksellers, many of whom find book related gift products a good way to boost their bottom lines.

But how to discover what gift items are available? How to see them and touch them and speak to the producers? This is the whole point of The Emporium, which is a great celebration of book related products!

One of the reasons booksellers, large and small, attend the Fair is to seek out new suppliers, new gifts, new ranges, new lines – to explore what is available and forge new business relationships. The Emporium facilitates just that. It is the perfect place to find those items that will set your store apart from the competition!

Regular exhibitors include the Booksellers Association and LBF supporting campaigns, such as Books are my Bag, as well as the Independent Buyers Club which puts smaller publishers in touch with retailers.

The ‘Retail & Etail’ insight seminar stream is programmed by the Booksellers Association of UK & Ireland and seminars run for the first two days of the Fair.

Nothing emphasises this more than the Market Focus programme which has run since 2004 and seeks to facilitate links and boost trade between UK publishers and their foreign counterparts. Imagine hands across the ocean, exchanging creative content – different people united by a common love of story and knowledge.

The aim of Market Focus is to increase dialogue, to sell rights, to find authors that work in one territory who can then find a whole new audience in another. Its success over the years can be seen in the International Rights Centre which has a display of titles that have found success as a result of this initiative.

LBF is fabulously international, like a book version of the Olympics.

The International Rights Centre is where those titles, projects, films, ideas and characters who we might later see in our bookshops or cinema screens, often begin their journey into the public realm. The forest of tables has become easier – and more fun – to navigate with the introduction of author zones: Chaucer, Dickens, Shakespeare et al, marking out each cluster.

With over 590 tables and 400 companies from 30 countries, it is an impressive sight. But if you think it sounds like a giant, open plan office, how many offices have a pop-up version of London’s famous Ivy restaurant? The Club at The Ivy offers a champagne bar and seating area, waitress and concierge service, daily continental breakfast, tea and cocktail snacks and a private area for members to socialise, hold meetings and relax. The perfect place to celebrate that deal!

Authors feel at home at the Fair – and so they should. Author HQ comprises a theatre and networking area and is one of the most popular features of the Fair, always with a great deal of interest from the self-publishing community. It’s an area that demonstrates LBF’s role in acknowledging the changes in the industry by providing a forum for the ever-expanding number of approaches to publishing to be discussed.

WRITERS ARE AT THE HEART OF THE FAIR

Many agents are among the audience here, looking for those self-published authors that they feel they can take to another level.

Throughout the Fair there is an Author of the Day programme, with writers honoured in the past numbering Hilary Mantel, William Boyd and Bi Feiyu. They are interviewed in the English PEN Literary Salon and take part in signings and seminars.

ENGLISH PEN LITERARY SALON & FOYLES BOOKSHOP

We are proud to have Foyles as our official bookseller. If it isn’t the most famous bookselling name in the world, then it is certainly in the top three.

Now in its 112th year, it brings its famous name to LBF once again where it stocks titles by the featured authors, as a well as a carefully curated selection of additional titles.

A book fair where you could not buy books would be curious indeed. Who in the industry is not a bookbuyer?

THE AUTHOR AND THE AUDIENCE

The London Book Fair is about the book industry in its entirety – and that includes providing a platform for more difficult issues such as censorship to be discussed. PEN International is the body that campaigns for freedom of expression for writers everywhere. The English PEN Literary Salon hosts events, Author of the Day interviews and literary debate throughout the Fair.

In an increasingly global book trade the role of the translator has never been more important. If there is a barrier preventing the flow of titles from one territory to another, it can often be the lack of good translators. In the beginning was the word – and its translator…

But are translators fairly remunerated? Are they given due credit? The Literary Translation Centre (LTC) provides a forum to address these and other issues. In effect, the LTC is a mini-fair in its own right, with a curated seminar programme in its own theatre and the world’s leading translators all gathered in one spot.

While there is much to inform, provoke and excite on the show-floor and in its theatres, there is also an impressive programme of stimulating talks and seminars taking place off the show-floor. The range of topics covered in the Insights Programme is staggering. Copyright licensing in the digital age, the gamification of publishing, digital publishing in sub-Saharan Africa, the independent booksellers’ guide to multi-channel bookselling, how should mainstream publishers react to self-publishing, what sort of skills are publishers looking for…the list is rich and endless.

The London Book Fair has rich soil; it is worth digging your hands in deep since there is far more to discover than you might realise.
