Letter from the Editor:
Soooo many SCARY things going on… it’s hard to focus on just one – right? Of course I
mean Halloween – what were you thinking?? Check inside for great ways to celebrate
Halloween here in Londonderry!
The origins of Halloween seem far-fetched but it is thought to have originated with the
ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes
to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November
First as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday commonly known as All
Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was
known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a
secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-
or-treating. HALLmark HALLoween?
Ok – I know I’m late to the party about a lot of things but I drove to Gale Meadow Pond
for the first time in my life this week - who knew? WOW! Stunning! Gale Meadows
Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is an approximately 707-acre parcel located in the
towns of Londonderry and Winhall. It is owned by the State of Vermont and managed by
the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. It includes a 195-acre man-made pond that
averages 8 feet deep and has a maximum depth of about 20 feet. The principal tributary
to the pond is Mill Brook. The scenic 195-acre Gale Meadows Pond is the focal point for
recreational activity on the property. Canoeing, kayaking, boating, fishing, and wildlife
viewing are very popular activities here. I want to go out with a chair and glass of
something and just sit there for hours. RUN, don’t walk and catch mother nature at her
best!

Londonderry Conservation Commission Sponsors Cougar Talk
By Steve Swinburne
The Londonderry Conservation Commission invites you to a fascinating and fact-filled
talk by biologist Sue Morse entitled “The Cougar Comes East.” The free program is
Tuesday, October 3 at 7 p.m. and will be held at Flood Brook School, Route 11,
Londonderry, Vermont.
There is no question about it. Cougars are not only being seen in eastern North
America, some are attempting to recolonize their former habitats. Where once it was
flatly dismissed as an impossibility in the so-called developed east, scientists have now
documented cougar dispersals and even occupancy in a growing list of eastern states and
provinces. Join us for a magnificently illustrated introduction to cougar biology and
ecology in the broad diversity of habitats where Sue has studied them, from Alberta to the
Arizona/Mexico border. We will also get the low-down regarding the latest confirmations
of cougars in the east, including the recently documented suitability of a substantial
amount of wild habitats from Manitoba to Louisiana and Maine to Georgia. It is only a
matter of time!

Sue is a forester, habitat ecologist, professional tracker, and passionate student of
the woods. She loves solving the mystery of a claw mark on a tree or figuring out who
deposited a black scat in the forest surrounding her farm. Her scientific method is simple
and neat. She calls it “ground truthing.” She learns facts by walking in the forest and
making observations, much as naturalists John Burroughs and Henry David Thoreau and
scientist Jane Goodall did in decades past.
Sue is at home in the forest. She grew up in the forests and farming country of
Mount Airy and Norristown, Pennsylvania. She comes for a long line of landscapers and
foresters, and her parents, grandfather, and great-grand-father all planted and grew trees
for a living. She likes to say, “Forestry runs in my sap.”
In 1994, Sue formed a nonprofit conservation organization called Keeping Track.
Its mission is to inspire community participation in the long-term stewardship of wildlife
habitat.
Sue lives in northern Vermont and has studied bobcats, lynx and cougars for over
40 years. She’s a self-described “catoholic.” If you’re interested in big cats or have you
spotted what you think is a mountain lion, you won’t want to miss this evening.

List of what will be needed by the Food Pantry, a basket for donations and boxes for food
collection will be available. We could use more help.
Barrel Finances: Joel reported that he and Skip met with Barbara & Bob Wells and the
outcome was the Wantastiquet Foundation would be set up having a 501C-3 tax
exempt number and all future contributions would go into this account and be tax
deductible. Need to create a small Board of Directors.
** Don’t quote me, but I believe the Rotary would encourage and welcome any and all
interest in becoming a member or possibly volunteering on an as needed basis. They are
instrumental in supporting various non profits and charities in town and supporting the
efforts of various groups in making downtown Londonderry a nicer, more beautiful place
as well as their efforts with the plants and boxes around town. Typically Rotary’s
members are heavily weighted with local businesses and I encourage our local business
to join as well! They are huge supporters of Neighborhood Connections and anybody
interested in the Rotary should talk to them and volunteer!! Please! Contact Skip
Raymond at the Wantastiquet Rotary [email protected] if you have any questions.

BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
Have you noticed the triangle at the intersection of Routes 11 and 100? The Londonderry
Beautification Committee has been busy all summer and now fall, planting, weeding and
trimming. We had an early flash of color with daffodils and tulips, followed by blue
flowering Baptisia, yellow daylilies and Asian lilies. We just planted chrysanthemums
and more black eyed susan’s. It is a great splash of color as you enter or depart town.
We thank the watering brigade for tending the flower boxes and the tubs that have added
color throughout the town. Each week, a Londonderry volunteer has watered and
fertilized each of the boxes on the Williams and Utley bridges as well as atop the painted
wall near the Shoe Barn.
Our town entrance signs, which greet visitors arriving from the north, south, east and
west, have been repainted and lettered with reflective tape.
The Beautification Committee has begun weeding the painted wall adjacent to the Shoe
Barn and added 4 window boxes on top of the wall.
The Town Beautification Committee wishes to thank all the volunteers that work to keep
our town colorful in the summer. We are interested in any ideas that you may have for
projects that can enhance the beauty of our public spaces. We are also asking interested
citizens to join our committee. You can send a USPS message to Londonderry
Beautification Committee, c/o Londonderry Town Hall, 100 Old School St., S.
Londonderry, VT 05155. Committee members: Helen Hamman, Joel Kuhlberg, Martha
Dale, Caroline and John Jopling, Barbara Wells and Paul Gordon.

WHAT IS IN A NAME?
It has been brought up numerous times that the name we co-opted from the former
Londonderry Monthly is… ROUTINE (dull, commonplace, unimaginative etc).
Somebody dredged up the former, former name from… the 1940’s? 30’s? which was
Londonderry Aire…. HAHA – I love that actually. So we are asking you – for names,
preferences, suggestions or any brilliant idea of what our little newsletter should be
called. Please submit your ideas or requests to [email protected]. I retain the right to
refuse any and all suggestions we don’t like. Thank you.
