PTO parents, Niki Hitch and Julie Crawford, co-chairs of the Healthy Cand Earth Committee at Antioch Elementary School in Matthews, NC walready working hard at the school encouraging existing recycling effbut when they met TLP they knew there was so much more they couldto impact the lives, minds and hearts of the children at Antioch.

After meeting Rebecca Wofford and hearing what drove her to start TL

a networking event almost a year ago, Niki knew she and Julie wouldpartnering Antioch Elementary school with TLP! They both speagetting goose bumps after hearing Rebecca talk about what drove hestart TLP. Niki says TLPs message struck such a cord with me!thing that always stands out to anyone who spends even a minute incafeteria is the amount of food that is wasted. At that point, it only msense to see if Mrs. Dillon, the school Principal would consider looking TLP as an organization to possibly partner with. And partner they did!

Julie takes up the story from there. Our incred

principal Karen Dillon came up with the idemaking Antioch and Lemanyata sister schoNiki and I wanted to sell some type of reuslunch products to encourage our students toless wasteful. Since TLP sells the Lunchskinsdecided to use them to make money for TLP. piggybacked on the sale of those with our A Da-Day Campaign that ran for one week. Estudent was asked to bring in at least one dim

day that would feed 6 children.

We raised $300 and also sold around 70 Lunchskins. We were able to feed around 9000 children just basedon the money we raised. !!

Looking forward, on April 19th, our committee is

hosting a Healthy Green Gator Night open to all AntiochFamilies. Rebecca and TLP will be a big focus of thenight. She will be set up in our media center for theparents and children to meet her and hear her story asshe shares a slide show of past efforts and currentsuccesses. For the next Tanzania Trip Team we will becollecting plastic mugs and school supplies to fill theirsuitcases. Without a cup, a child goes without. Nikinotes Another aspect of TLP that was a great fit, in mymind, for school age children was the fact that it takesso little money to feed one child. We are also planning to have samples of the porridgeavailable that evening for the parents and/children to try. Cant wait for that!

We really hope to continue this partnership for years to come.

In the next issue of the Lunch Times, we hope Principal, Mrs. Karen Dillon will share with a Keep the Change initiative she implemented at the schools Fall Book Fair and how theteachers have been incorporating TLP into their global education. !

I think The Lunch Project brings so much joy to those who are aware of it.

    Tanzania Trip

    2013

The Lunch Project Tanzania Tripteam has been meetingsince early Januaryplanning the 2013 trip. The purpose of this yearstrip is three-fold. The team will participate inassisting at the school in recreation andclassroom hours. They will again beconstructing much needed classroomfurniture and they will be serving thelunches that week. The trip is being led byJeremy Early, he was a participant on the2012 trip and can be seen in thephotographs serving food with Rebecca. Agroup of 8, Kyle Elworthy, Jeremy Early,Kelsey Dorset, Caroline Riddle, CharlieRiddle, Sarah Brock, Sarah Morgan and

Steve Walker will be traveling to Tanzania tobuild desks, educate, serve lunches andshare in the school life of the children ofLemanyata Primary School in early June.

When we asked recent Appalachian StateUniversity graduate Kelsey Dorset, WhyThe Lunch Project?, here is what she said:The better question is, "Why not The LunchProject?" If you're someone who values theimportance of education and the impact itcan have on the life of a child as much as Ido, it's a no brainer. I wholeheartedlybelieve that every child is entitled to thesame shot at success and TLP is readilymaking that a reality. This incredibleorganization is literally changing the worldone bowl at a time and I'd have been afool for not jumping on board!

The Lunch Project announcesA Summer of Service 2013

A Summer of Service 2013 is the brainchild of a TLP parents and volunteers Sarah and JMichael Morgan who were intrigued by TLPs mission !to foster a sense of philanthropy a

global awareness in all people. But looking at the calendar during the school year, it seemed la daunting task, to add another thing to their busy schedule. Parents to daughters Jillian aMarlo and son Silas, Sarah quickly realized that during the school year their children would be keactive with their education, church and extra-curricular activities, so the summer looked likebigger and better chunk of time during which theyd be able to influence them in the values philanthropy and global awareness.

That said, the summer of 2012, the Morgan Family made acommitment to have a summer of servant leadership. They planned an event to raise money and awareness for

TLP themed around the Olympics. Hand made invitationswere sent out, signage, medals, informational material wasmade, activities were planned and eventually thank younotes were sent out to friends and neighbors. It was ahuge success not only raising over $700 for TLP lunchesbut also impacting the lives of all the children and familieswho participated in the kid-sized games. To read a fullwrite up on this amazing idea click on the following lihttp://www.thecharlotteweekly.com/education/2012/08/backyard-benefit/ Jillian Morgan was ahonored as a recipient of the Do the Right Thing Award for her work on the Olympic Games Projfor TLP. A Summer of Service 2013 is truly a reflection of our adventures last summer, Sarah says. Tyear we are starting early to get families with the same goals of global philanthropy and educatto sign up and have their very own Summer of Service, with our support.
