The Messenger The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Olney, Maryland November 2016 “The Generosity of God” “You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion” 2 Corinthians 9:11 I want to ask you to do the following: I want to ask you to make a list of the way God has been generous to you over the years. I want you to make a list of the ways God has blessed you generously through your participation in this congregation. I want you to pray for the generosity of God every day. I want to ask you to pray daily for the church. I want to ask you to pray to God to help you attend worship weekly and to help you to make a regular offering to support the ministry of Good Shepherd and our work together for God’s Kingdom in this place. Here’s what’s important for those who believe in Christ: “Worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.” Worship is the most critical component of our life together and the most important activity we do together. It puts us in touch with our Lord, each other and his means of grace in a way that nurtures us, compels us and sustains us. Missing worship robs us of the necessary gifts it gives us and limits the gifts we can share with each other. Worship and faith are about community, the body of Christ, being together. Almost every aspect of worship and faith is relationship and community at work. Many believe that a “private faith” between me and God will do. A “private faith,” however, denies relationship, withdraws our voice and gift from the community, and diminishes the work of the whole body of Christ, the Church. Worship and community and service are another necessary trinity in the faith. James, says, “Faith without works is dead.” Worship nurtures and fires us up; community supports and balances us, and spreads the responsibility; and the service translates our beliefs and words into deeds and action. The generosity of God blesses us and inspires and compels us to be generous in our response to his love and grace at work in and through us. Peace,

“The Generosity of God”

“You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion” 2 Corinthians 9:11

I want to ask you to do the following: I want to ask you to make a list of the way God has been generous to you over the years.

Shepherd’s Care Children’s Center

Diana Izrailova-Canarte, Director 301-570-7566

Dear LCGS Members, A big thank you to all for a beautiful Installation. The preschool teachers and I sure felt the warm welcome! As the preschool staff, we value the effective partnership we have with our parents as we work together to enhance each child’s learning. We aim to provide a happy, caring and stimulating environment in which children can grow and learn with confidence. The staff and I are committed to providing an exciting curriculum, which is balanced and provides for individual needs, so that all children are able to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their school life. Great teachers are learners themselves who display enthusiasm, modify their teaching to meet the needs of their students, encourage learning and understanding and are concerned with developing their students’ skills. Here are a few things you probably did not know about our great teachers: Christine Setzer is our three’s teacher and has been working with children of all ages for twenty-five years both in public and private schools. She holds a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. She, her husband, two daughters and a cat call Olney their home. She is an avid reader and traveler. A fun fact about Christine, she keeps bees and is a hit with all that yummy honey! Carolina Lopez is our three’s assistant teacher. She is originally from Bogota, Colombia where she earned a degree in Communications. After moving to the US in 2005, she has since been married with two beautiful children. She a lover of music and movies. Carolina is very creative and encourages creativity in our students.

Linda Kielbasa is our four’s teacher. Her extensive knowledge of early childhood development stems from over twenty years as a preschool teacher. She is married with two children. Linda earned a degree in Law Enforcement from the University of Baltimore. She was assigned to the White House as a secret service officer. Some of her hobbies include travel and yoga.

Sandra Pernie is our four’s assistant teacher. She has been with SCCC since 2014. A native of Latvia, Sandra received a degree in Marketing and Psychology. After moving to the US in 2000, Sandra worked for the Food and Drug Administration for two years until she had her children. Sandra’s passions include her children, husband, yoga, travel and food.

As always, it is delight to work here at SCCC and I am excited for the many “end of fall” festivities we have in store!

Sincerely, Diana Izrailova-Canarte Director

For the Month of November The Sunday School continues to collect money for Heifer International this Fall to raise money for the Heifer Project. It embraces the idea of PASSING ON THE GIFT. The project donates animals and shows the recipients how to care for them. The first female offspring of their livestock is donated to another family. This extends the impact of the original gift, allowing a once impoverished family to become donors and full participants in improving their communities. Please refer to the article about the changes in the regular church schedule to 10:00 elsewhere in this newsletter. It gives the time changes for Sunday School as well. On December 11 when we have our Sunday School program, please have your child report by 9:00 a.m. to be ready for the 10:00 program. Thank you, Patricia Colacicco

Christmas Poinsettias Poinsettias may be purchased to beautify our sanctuary during the Christmas celebrations. A sign-up sheet will be available beginning Sunday, November 13th in the narthex for placing orders. Please be sure to indicate your name, the number and color of plant(s) you wish to purchase and in whose honor or memory you would like them to be. The cost will be on the signup sheet. Place your payment in the offering plate, indicating that it is for poinsettias. You may place your order through Sunday, December 4th.

Matthew 25 Coat Drive

The Matthew 25 grant recipients will be for new coats and essentials for Elementary School children and for Our House Men’s and Women’s Shelter. If

you would like to make a contribution, please make out the check to LCGS with a notation of “Matthew 25 Grant.” If you would like to enjoy the day and help shop for these items, please email Robert Wolters ([email protected]) or Darlene Maxfield at ([email protected]). Thank You, Bob and Darlene

Men’s Work Coats Needed

Good Shepherd will be collecting gently used men’s work coats for our Christmas Eve distribution in Langley Park in cooperation with Cristo Rey and Pastor Margarita.

We are looking for Men’s work coats (insulated flannel hoodies, insulated vests, fleece canvas shirts, denim jackets, etc.). These coats are for the workers in the Langley Park area and they primarily do labor-related jobs (landscaping, construction, etc.) so coats and jackets they can work in, hats and gloves are an extra bonus.

The “Coat Drive“ box will be in a large well-marked box near the front door.

for the December Newsletter

It will be on Tuesday, November 15.

Thank you, Nancy Wald

“Queen of Katwe” Written by Tim Crothers

Believe in yourself, challenge yourself, stay calm, don’t get discouraged, be patient and have a dream. Follow these simple rules and you will EXCEL not only in chess, but also in life. By teaching this complex game to the children of Katwe, in an unstable Ugandan slum of Katenda, inspired one child in particular to greatness. This book tells the story of Phiona who became the first female national chess champion at the age of 15. Whether you are a Knight or a Pawn, bring a dish to share and join us in the Family Life Wing to discuss and solve the mysteries of life.

From 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3 and from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 4. Good Shepherd once again presents Journey through Bethlehem, an interactive

production portraying Bethlehem at the time of our Savior’s birth. Last year 115 members and friends of Good Shepherd donated 1,655 hours of their talents to present this outreach activity to the community. If you haven’t been part of it before, come to Bethlehem and see. The Family Life Wing and Sanctuary transformations are stunning. It is a thrilling witness - Good Shepherd’s Advent gift to the community! The Director this year is Mark Hardcastle (443-745-5852).

We need your help! Volunteers and Cast members. If you haven’t signed up yet – don’t miss this great opportunity to use your talents! Journey Through Bethlehem has an opening just perfect for you. Can you build, act, lift, sing, sew or cook? Pick

any or all. It’s a great production the wider community around us looks forward to. Also needed are “old things” for props - cloth, crates, copper, or pottery pieces - items for

a market scene set up in Bethlehem. Please no more baskets!! We’re hoping each family will sign up to help in some way. ASK ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: Phil Nicholson – assisting with advertising Jim Taylor – setting up the city Mel Stone-Wald – feeding the workers NEED VOLUNTEER – picking up props from vendors NEED VOLUNTEER – preparing decorations

Recruiting cast members

Paul Fowler – Kids through high school Marc Gregory – Adults Lisa Carpenter – providing hospitality, goodies & service Colette Carter – readying costumes, makeup application Eric Maxfield singing with the Praise Band Tom Wilk – taking down and storing the city

There are also other ways to help:

• Pray that the message of Christ born at Christmas will reach new hearts through Journey Through Bethlehem;

• Invite friends, neighbors and co-workers to attend;

• Come to Journey Through Bethlehem yourself, bringing family and friends;

• Inform others of Journey Through Bethlehem and our Sunday worship times.

Journey Through Bethlehem Behind the Scenes

Show Props – Please bring show props to the church by Friday, December 4th. It will become part of the scenery. If you want it back, please put your name on the bottom and make sure you are here to pick it up Sunday, December 6th (after 7:30 PM). Or designate a responsible person to get it for you. If you are donating it, our prop collection will grow. Thank you either way!

Please help Set-Up & Take-Down

December 1st, Thursday, at 5:00 PM the preschool is broken down, at 6:00 PM the PVC pipe, “stars” are hung and the scrim goes up!

December 2nd, Friday 3:00 PM – stage sets are pulled out of the shed and placed in the family life wing. Help is needed! At 5:00 PM the scenery will be set up. Dinner will be served to workers. Bring your own tools and lots of willingness to help.

December 4th, Sunday night, 7:30 PM the scenery is taken down, stored, the floor swept and mopped. Large preschool items will be moved from the stage to the Family Life Wing floor.

December 5th, Monday, the preschool teachers set up for Tuesday classes.
