The Melior Group Celebrates National Ice Cream Month! Here are some fun facts about our favorite frozen treats…
*Yo! We’re from Philly, so it’s JIMMIES that top your ice cream or soft serve or custard, not sprinkles!
Ice Cream • Dates back to 18th century England • A Philly institution, Bassett’s Ice Cream boasts it is the oldest ice cream company in
America (c. 1861) • The cone was invented for the 1904 World Fair in St. Louis • Vanilla may be the most popular flavor, but chocolate syrup/sauce is the most
popular topping • National Ice Cream month was declared by Ronald Reagan in 1984… but jelly beans
haven’t yet become a popular topping
Frozen Custard • It’s ice cream made with eggs in addition to
cream and sugar • Must have at least 10% milkfat & at least 1.4%
egg yolks to be considered custard • Frozen custard was invented in Coney Island, NY
in 1919, when ice cream vendors Archie and Elton Kohr found that adding egg yolks to ice cream created a smoother texture and helped the ice cream stay cold longer
• Milwaukee, WI has the highest concentration of frozen custard shops in the world, per capita
Soft Serve • Ice cream with air introduced during the
freezing process • Both Carvel® and Dairy Queen® claim to
have invented soft serve • Delicious topped with Jimmies*
FroYo – these shops are EVERYWHERE • International Frozen Yogurt Day is February 6 • “Yogurt” means “to curdle” in Turkish • It’s a booming business: the number of FroYo shops in the
U.S. has increased by 25% in the past 7 years • You can get your sushi and FroYo fix at Yoshi (get it?) in
Philadelphia’s Suburban Station
Ice Pops • Invented in 1905 in Oakland, CA by
an 11 year old boy • The major cause of summer
stickiness in children under 10 • Popsicle ® is a registered trademark!
Gelato • Italian for ice cream • By statute, in Italy gelato must contain at
least 3.5% butterfat to be official
Water Ice (aka Wooder-Ice) • Frozen treats like water ice date back to the Persian Empire, where
snow and ice were mixed with grape juice • It’s rumored that some Philadelphians go through water ice
withdrawal in the winter months • The Saloon in South Philly offers the John's Water Ice Martini, which
blends lemon water ice with limoncello, the lemon-flavored Italian liqueur, and Absolut Citron vodka
• President Obama is a fan of John’s Water Ice in South Philly: “I love being in Philly. Especially when I’ve got ice like this.”
