• Huge variation in the nature, length and thoroughness of strategic economic plans

• There is a need for greater emphasis on long term economic sustainability and resilience to work alongside the immediate demand for rapid productivity gains

• All except The Marches and Greater Lincolnshire cite the importance of maximising the benefit of HS2

– Seen as a catalyst for physical regeneration

– Potential to transform connectivity of the region.

• Other transport based growth aims:

– East Midlands Gateway Rail Freight Interchange - a 250 acre distribution and logistics development alongside East Midlands Airport and the M1.

– Spalding Rail Freight Hub -infrastructure investment to facilitate the development of a 60 hectare rail freight interchange at Deeping Fen to support further growth of food processing.

• Is there any advantage to the strategic co-ordination of some economic functions / policy interventions East-West?

• ‘Think Midlands’ could involve co-operation at supra-LEP scale around a set of ‘value-chain’ activities. For example:

– Infrastructure (HS2, regional airports)

– Clusters and value chains (MAA; AMSCI; Formula E)

– Labour markets (challenge of engineering)

– Global inward investment brand

The Midlands Aerospace Alliance was formed in 2003 to support and represent the aerospace industry across the Midlands region

• Share knowledge and information– To improve the market and business support opportunities of members

• Deliver support programmes to members– To directly improve the performance of our individual members

• Lead coordination of shared strategy– To ensure that the Midlands voice is fully represented in the formation

of national aerospace strategies and programmes

An example of immanent potential…

• Formula E is a new FIA single-seater championship and the world's first fully-electric racing series

• A vision for the future of the motor industry, a framework for R&D and a way of accelerating interest in Low carbon vehicles

• All ten teams will be based at, and develop the cars from, a base at the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire

• The value of the Formula E supply chain will be between £30m-£50m by 2015 with benefits extending to advanced manufacturing companies across the East and West Midlands
