THE NEW FACE of TINIG As we continue our journey in life, we will either encounter something new, have a desire to change something old, or simply change something for change’s sake. The arrival of new things is inevitable. In BK for one, something new was born out of our dream for change and yes, you are now holding that something new in your hands - the new TINIG newsletter. Sometime ago, talented BK writers met and spent time together for a reason. All of them shared a dream of creating a tool for oneness, awareness, and inspiration. The tool that we have called TINIG since 1997 is old and due for a vibrant change. Like a child who is maturing in years, our newsletter is in a constant phase of transition. The new TINIG team envi-sions it to be curious, fearless, and ambitious. It is a newsletter that talks about success, unity, hope, failure, loss, love, dreams, reflections, and everything else that keep all of us in BK together. TINIG will continue to be a part of our life in BK. As we try to capture in words the experiences of BK, its employees, clients, and partners; the events that make us one, the achieve-ments and honors that cement our institution’s place among the best in its field, we encourage all of you to continue, or if you haven’t started yet, to begin reading TINIG. It is your voice we will try to set people on their ears. The articles we will be coming out in the months to come, are pieces of our BK life shared in informative yet inspiring ways. We hope to continue to be ONE using TINIG. Lastly, since it is also our goal to make TINIG a trending topic, you have to guess the theme for this issue of TINIG’s New Face. The cover should be a good start. Cheers! EDITORIAL

BK EVENTS

The Annual Stockholders’ Meeting was held last March 18, 2012 in Villa Marines Malainin, Ibaan, Batangas. It was attended by the Board of Direc-tors and some 96 stockholders.

The President of Bangko Kabayan reported that the operation of the bank is continuously improving. According to him, the financial services including both deposits and loans were managed efficiently by the BK employees who unselfishly gave their time and dedication to serve

others. The excellent type of service being provided by the bank resulted to the increase in number of satisfied clients.

He stated that BK has grown its total resources reaching the P2B mark by year-end.

It was because of these impressive figures that the bank was able to declare an 8% cash and 10% stock dividends.

The President also discussed the operational and organizational highlights beginning with the opening of BK Lipa, its 16th branch, in March 2011. He cited the continuous partnership with remittance enterprises and creative service projects that helped the bank to perform well reaching out existing clients and acquiring new ones through innovative products and services. He also talked about the events of the past year such as the launching of “Bibo Kid Savers”; sponsoring the blessing of 13 tractors of the Batangas Integrated Sugar Planters Multi-purpose Cooperative (BISPMPC) which BK financed in support of its mechanization program, and the long-awaited BSP approval of the amendment allowing BK to engage in microinsurance for its depositors. He was happy to report that BK was again honored with its 6th EAGLE Achievement Award given by Microenterprise Access to Bank-ing Services (MABS) to a rural bank which has attained “AA” rating under the MABS-EAGLE standard. He also shared the recognition given by Land Bank of the Philippines as “Most Outstanding Countryside Financial Institution” in Region 4 for the third time.

He also mentioned BK’s expansion plan of going out to other areas of Region 4 within 2012 and the plan of acquiring a new Core Banking Software (CBS). Before the report ended, Atty. Ganzon announced the upcoming celebration of BK’s 55th year in August.

BK Showcases Talent in the 180th Foundation Day of Ibaan By: Zaira Cay Perez (HRD)

The municipality of Ibaan celebrated its 180th Founding Anniversary last February 11, 2012 with a weeklong celebra-tion of different activities. Some of the highlights of the celebration were The Search for Mutya ng Ibaan, Kantasi-yahan, Liempuhan, car show and a fun run.

Different organizations such as Department of Education (DepEd), Local Government Unit (LGU), Bankers and Non Government Organization (NGOs) also showcased their employees’ talents during the night of the Cultural Presentation held last February 9, 2012. Bangko Kabayan was proudly one of them. The bank wowed the audience by performing a medley of dances spanning decades of Ibaan’s rich history. The Story behind the Scenes:

Eight days of practice wasn’t that easy. The dancers from the different branches needed to travel to the Ex-ecutive Office after work to attend the practice. They sacrificed their weekends and even came home late just to finish the rehearsal. Even though tired, they

still managed to smile and have fun. This activity developed new friendships among employees coming from different branches and gave them a chance to represent BK in a spectacular and memorable fashion. The only reward they wanted was the applause and the positive feedback from the audience, especially the Senior Management.

During the night of the presentation, the BK dancers were excited but at the same time nervous of what will happen.

After the breakthrough performance, I can say that BK employees are really talented. They were flattered upon hearing the positive comments. They proved that they really had talent and spirit in their performance.

BK General Assembly 2012 By: Charisma Ronquillo (BCB)

Every year, we hold our general assembly to celebrate the success we garnered in the past year. It is also the time for us to catch up with other co-employees and meet new members of our BK Family.

Mrs. Angel Pentinio-Toreja shared about service excellence and for me, it was very interesting and overwhelming ex-perience especially the last part of her presentation when BK logo appeared in the center of the leading banks today. That simple illustration conveys a

conviction that unity and delivering service excellence can lead to our success.

Employees and branches also took home awards and cash prizes for their outstanding performance last year. I got a chance to talk to a first time attendee of GA and she shared that she got inspired not only on the cash prizes but also with the individual recognition that some of us received. She looks forward to experience it herself in the next years.

BK’s general Assembly is an inspiring event to look back where we can renew our commitment to our work and to the institution that we work for.

CUENCA BRANCH: Muling Nagtamo ng Pagkilalala By: Mark Gil Makalintal (CBB)

Kami ang tinanghal na 2nd Best in Loans, 3rd Best in Deposits at 2nd runner-up sa Best in Microfinance Portfolio.

Isabel P. Montealto at Gng. Shirley Husmillo.

BRANCH & DEPARTMENT UPDATES

The hall was full of anticipation for the emcee to announce the most-awaited part of the event: the announcement of the Best Branch. All ears to the emcees because nobody from 16 branches knows what award they will receive. Some were already making conclusions after the minor awards were given. Everyone shouted for their bet on who will receive the highest award for the 2011 performance. I remember nobody from the audience shouted the name of our branch.

The loudest clap and shout of happiness came from all of us in SJB after the emcees and Mrs. Liza Mercado announced the winners. SJB tied up with the Ibaan Branch. We got highest award and it was extremely unexpected. When Monday came (Feb. 27, 2012) everyone at the office still wears a big smile. We are thankful for having the great unexpected award. The awards (Best in Income Management and Best Branch) were the result of the branch’s united efforts. The challenges and all the pressures we all experienced before inspired us to meet the expectations and to keep up the good performance. Congratulations, SJB!

BK: Partnering with Batang Atikha Savers By: Victorino Perea (MBB)

Mabini Branch with other four (4) BK branches (Batangas, Ibaan, Cuenca and Lemery) joined the Annual Batang Atikha Savers Club Congress last March 24, 2012 in Talaga Elementary School - Mabini, Batangas. Talented students from the said host school, started the program with a doxology. MF Supervisor Shirley Esmiller shared Savings Consciousness while Manager Jocelyn Guerra introduced the Bibo Kid Savings. Attendees who were not yet enrolled as members had the chance to open their accounts on that same day. Selected kids and parents also delivered their testimonials on how Atikha affects their lives. Food breaks, games, school presentations and awarding were also part of the event. With the aid of the teacher trainers and volunteers, it was indeed a successful occasion. More power Batang Atikha!

Editor’s Note: San Jose Branch shares the BRANCH OF THE YEAR AWARD with IBAAN BRANCH. Congratulations, IBB!

Another new savings prod-uct of Bangko Kabayan

called Bibo Kid Savings Account was launched last January 21, 2012 at the CAP Auditorium, Lipa City. It was attended by students ages 7-12 from 22 different schools in Batangas including St. Jude Science and Technological School, Cuenca Central Elementary School, St. Bridget’s College, St. Anthony Montessori, Holy Family Montessori, De La Salle Lipa, Canossa Academy, The Mabini Academy, and many others. The program started with a short talk of Ms. Rona Sebuc, a Microfi-nance Supervisor and an accredited financial literacy trainer of the bank, about making spending and saving decisions ("Tamang

Paggastos at Pag-iimpok"). This was followed by a short game which allowed the participants to apply what they learned in the talk. Aside from games, there were also other free fun booths for the kids such as face painting area and photo booth. As of February 2012, the savings product generated 354 accounts bank wide and is continuously increasing. The Bibo Kid Sav-ings Account aims to help kids ages 7-12 save up for their future while helping com-munities around them.

Malungkot, masaya at may kakai-bang takot at nerbiyos.

January - March 2012 TINIG 5

Last March 31, 2012, BK employees attended the Lenten Recollection at Brindisi Hall, Capuchin Retreat Center facilitated by Mr. Jeronimo “Mimo” Perez. This was my first time to join the said activity and it was a perfect opportunity for all of us to have that kind of recollection before the holy week. It was a simple and short event but it was definitely meaningful. Even though the recollec-tion was a half day session, there are still a lot of reflections and realizations. We watched some video clips and read a story about

God’s love for His children. That was the time we real-ized that God doesn’t make a

junk, we are all his o r i g i n a l m a s t e r -piece. We should not be afraid if we commit

mistakes because God will always forgive us. We don't have to change for God to love us, we just have to be true to ourselves and be sincere with all our hearts. In addition, Lenten season is the time for us to remem-ber the death and resurrec-

tion of Jesus Christ which symbolizes the uncondi-tional love, freedom and hope He had given us. He loves us without expecting anything in return. We must remember this: “To be perfect simply means to walk with God despite our flaws. Holiness, means being in the Divine presence, inspite of the fact that we are not perfectly whole, good, true, and beautiful.” Live Jesus in our hearts...forever.

BRANCH & DEPARTMENT UPDATES

Page 6: THE NEW FACE of TINIG

By: Atty. Juliet Nicolas Patulot

ast February 29, 2012 at about half past two in the afternoon, I received

an early Easter gift. Like that very one day in a leap year, it was rare. The result of the 2011 Bar Exams was out and, according to the very excited voice of Atty. FSG's E.A. (and not just the voices in my head), I made it. Truth to tell, although I prayed hard to God and to all the saints in heaven to give me the grace of passing the bar exams, this time when it finally came true, I didn't want to believe it. I received a lot of calls and text messages that day. Many came from people I haven't heard from in a long while. Some I didn't even know but replied to, anyway. It was such a happy day. But then the messages I will remember most came from dear old friends inside and outside of BK, now scattered all around the globe, who thoughtfully prayed with me during the bar season and throughout the 3-month long ordeal of waiting for the results. They know my story, its highs and lows, so this feat is as good as theirs to claim too. And after being a recipient of God's overwhelming grace, I felt I have to share my story with the rest of the people in the BK world. All of us dream of becoming something someday. Believe it or not, mine was to be a trailblazer. I already shared this once in a Koinonia session when we were asked to write down or draw what we thought our purpose in life was. I remember writing something about a burning star that illumi-nates, paving and guiding the way for my family and all the people I love. As to exactly how I was going to do it, back in the day, I really had no idea. I also dreamed of becoming a lawyer. I think I was about 5 years old when I first met a lawyer. He was this kind man, people at the Villa in Brgy. Tulay called Atty. Ganzon, who bothered to stop by our little house one day just to greet my mother a happy birthday. It was July 20 and my mother said it was his birthday, too. I also think it is the Libra in me that made me romanticized the legal profession. I have always been in awe of lawyers. When they enter a room, I feel they bring with them some kind of an unusual cosmic power that

I instantly think I'm in the presence of greatness. With this kind of inspiration, in 2004 I enrolled in law school only to discover how childish my concept was. I dreamed of a fairy tale but in law school, I was treated to the tale of the Brothers Grimm. Law school was a “happy place”. Please forgive my irony. Nowhere in the world will you find a place where you pay a great deal of money to be miserable. I was there every weekend for years. There were professors

who were really generous in giving out reading and case digests assignments. They simply gave the whole subject curriculum for you to study in one week. The recitations (you can only pray your name's not among the shuffled classcards) were just so harsh and insulting that after a while you tend to develop a kill-me-now-I-have-nothing-else-to-lose attitude. There were books to buy and these were not cheap. Those I could not anymore afford to buy, I brought to the photocopier in Vito Cruz and I just forget about copyright infringement. There were sleepless nights I devoted to reading and a few, just sitting in a chair thinking, whether God really wanted me to bear this burden of isolation and loneliness I voluntarily inflicted upon myself. But every time, I felt the call to rise up to the challenge just a little more. Just a little bit more.

True, law school kept me away from taking part in the many events, milestones, and opportunities of the past 8 years. I was recently told I'm now one of the soon-to- be-extinct single female of my batch in the elementary and high school. My parents are getting older. My niece and nephews are almost grown. My batchmates in BK, who are my long-time friends, have gone abroad to pursue careers or family life. Everything stood still for me. I was in that state of suspended animation. But I keep telling myself if I could stand the last hurdle that was the bar exams where the pressure is ridiculously high, the sacrifices will all be worth it. The rest, as you know now, is history. It is believed our destiny is written in the stars. I don't know that with enough cer-tainty but as the great Vincent Van Gogh had once said, “The sight of the stars makes me dream”. If there's one special thing about the human spirit, I can safely say it is our capacity to dream. When you dream, you also listen to the voice of a higher being telling you all about your life's possibilities. I had these two wonderful dreams and I guess, I was fortunate enough to have ful-filled both of them at the same time. So I urge you all reading this, to dream. Dream big. Believe in the beauty of that dream. Share that big dream because you'll never know one day, someone with an even bigger heart (BK, Atty. FSG, TMG, and the list goes on and on.....) will be there to help you. When you have fulfilled that dream, dream on and continue to challenge your-self. It is the only way to grow. That way, you have already inspired some people or maybe even the ire of the hopeless bitter gourds. Either way, you become a true trailblazer. Just like a line of a favorite song of mine says: I want to do something different with the time I’ve been given, and I wanna try to touch a few hearts in this life, and leave nothing less than something that says, “I was here.”

he act of leading a leading organiza-tion is not an easy task, it requires a

lot of effort, dedication, creativity, trust, and faith. The experiences of LRL shared in this article shows how she fulfilled her role as a leader, mother, wife and a friend. She says all the things that happened to her, she credited to her GREAT DIRECTOR…. TINIG: What is your Management Style? LRL: The impression of others of me is I am strict. Yes, they are correct. Because I was raised by a disciplinarian type of family, I need to be strict in following the rules but I know how to adjust to the person who I manage. I hate confrontational actions, I prefer “dialogue” and open conversation. TINIG: What is poor performance to you? LRL: Performance to me is not whether you reach the target or not. It is the way you deliver service (But she thoughtfully shared that in BK standard, it is still when you reached the target). Good perform-ance is when there are no complains or when the problems in operation are re-solved. It is when your subordinate emu-lates you and when they are proud of you as their superior. Those are, for me, the indicators of a good performance. TINIG: In what way that your personal

values paralleled with BK core values? LRL: I am here in BK because of the divine providence. When a job was offered to me and upon knowing how BK works, I made a decision. I was inspired by the advocacy of BK and the way BK conducts business which is more than profit. At first it was challenging, because from a commercial bank I will embrace working in a rural bank, but still I was excited that time because I had an experience in banking and helping others, and I wanted to continue it. Among the 5 BK core values, Belief in Divine Providence is the heart of all, and because I embraced this value in my organization – Opus Dei, it became easy to me to adopt the culture of Bangko Kabayan. TINIG: How do you motivate your children as well as your subordinates?

LRL: The motivation that had an impact to my eldest son and daughter is seeing me in action, seeing me how I became a hard-working, dedicated and committed worker and mother at the same time. My two older children helped me transferred this type of motivation to my youngest son. In return, one of my sons, the eldest one, always checks my condition, where I am everyday or did I arrive safe at home. The motivation reciprocates. In motivating employees, my principle is I create “space” and let them “run” as far as they can go. I want them to use their own techniques and to explore new things. I feel the person first and then support him till the end. TINIG: What is your greatest FEAR? LRL: No.1 is when I am not able to help, when I am in the state of “helplessness”, when I cannot do anything. No 2. is the “unknown”- the next life, but I am guided by my FAITH to lessen this Fear. TINIG: Who makes most of the decisions, you or your husband? LRL: We consult each other in making a decision. We enumerate pros/cons of every issue. We make sure that we come up with an agreement. When the opportunity to work in BK was introduced to me, my husband had his concerns also. But in the end he gave me his full support. TINIG: What about your husband made you marry him? LRL: I graduated and worked earlier com-pared to my husband because he took two

courses in college. We met each other in a bank. He occupied an entry level position as credit investigator and I was the Officer of the Credit Department. It was a “developed” relationship, we are “best of friends”, both Batangueño and can talk about common things. He resigned as an employee of the bank to fight for his love. His respect for the elderly is the value that I admired of him most. He is courteous. When a person respects elders, that person has “something” in his heart. TINIG: How do you spend your leisure time? LRL: My family usually goes somewhere, in a place where we could bond. We are an extended family. I have a brother and a sister who have their family and we always go together as one big happy unit. I have my friends also. On a monthly basis we have our “get-together” gathering and enjoy the presence of those former college classmates who lived in Ayala Alabang too. TINIG: What is your definition of Success? Can you consider yourself as successful individual? LRL: Success for me is being HAPPY for what I am. I have tried to give my best as a mother, wife, co-worker and as a child of God. When you are happy because you did your best, it can be said that you are successful. People around me testified that I am successful, the way I raised my children, the banking experiences I had and of being myself. TINIG: What are the TIPS that you can give to those who want to follow your footsteps? LRL: . I can share only two things; First is FAITH in GOD. We must live our Faith, We should offer all the good things that we do to God and we should live life because of Him. He is our GREAT DIRECTOR. He gave us free will but we must also live life to the fullest by acquiring knowledge, new experiences, talking to people and making good choices. And after doing our deeds, we should surrender those to Him. The second thing is HARD WORK. There is no replacement on this aspect. We should practice this value during our elementary, high school, college days and even in our careers. I still work hard because I like helping others. The content of my everyday prayer is, ”For all that has been, thank you. For all that will be, in Your will is my Peace”….

Everyone could be a leader, but not all of us has the chance to be a leader ... The recent Management Training Program (MTP) of Bangko Kabayan for selected employees is about LEADERSHIP. It aims to have a “ready now” pool of employees that will take

the lead for BK's expan-sion plans, of having as many branches as possible in the next 5 years. It's nice to think that we are in an institution that has plans of growing and expanding. MTP was conducted at

BK Training Room. The classes started in November 2011 and ended last March 2012. Twenty three (23) fortunate employees qualified and composed the list of participants but only 18 were able to complete the modules. The most nerve-racking moment in the training could be the set of comprehensive exams and the

famous revalida moment. Revalida is the time when trainees were interviewed individually by a panel of BK officers from the top management. It was a heart pounding and sweating moment for others while for some it was the exact time to thank BK for this opportunity. An opportunity like this is hard to just let pass by. There is a saying, “Opportunity knocks once, grab it when it comes”. Just the thought that out of almost 300 employees (and still counting) that BK has today, 23 were chosen to undergo training for future plans, was astonishing. For the participants, the experience is extra ordinary in a way that it prompted us to develop our self confidence more,

aside from the new ideas and knowledge that we learned. It is the fruit of every endeavor each trainee exerted as a person, and as a BK employee. Congratulations to all the gradu-ates of the Management Training Program (MTP). Make Bangko Kabayan proud…

“Tunay na nakakatulong sa gastusing pam-pamilya ang inyong Salary Loan. Gayundin, ang Housing at Business Loan nyo. Mas mainam na umutang dito sa Kabayan kesa sa iba. Obligado akong magbayad dahil may inilalaan kayong time table (amortization schedule).

Vilma Dolor, Barangay Captain of Anilao East, Mabini

“Dahil nakacheke, nakakatulong ang Kaba-yan sa amin dahil hindi na mahirap ang magbilang ng malalaking halaga. Mabilis ang transaksyon dahil sa malapit ito sa simbahan. Ang isa pa ay mas ligtas ilagak ang pera dito, walang tauhan ang naglalakas loob na magtago ng pera sa kanilang pamamahala.”

Maria Lourdes Carolino, Finance Secretary of Mabini Parish Church

“Sa tulong ng Bangko Kabayan, dati rati'y nagrerenta lang ako. Ngunit ngayon nagka-roon na ako ng sariling pwesto ng talyer at autosupply dito sa Mabini.”

Genevive Fondevilla, Kabayan Borrower of Calicanto, Batangas City

Kamusta Ka, Kabayan? By: Shirley Esmiller

VICENNIAL By: Janeisa Evacula

The moment I saw the look in their eyes They were people who may fail, but ready to rise; Every hardship they face, it’s You they’ve been holding on ‘Cause we know behind this is a wonderful intention. They witnessed how we ended up here And so we thank them for their trust, cheers! For this two decades of being together Hand in hand; getting better and better! To help other people is not that easy, For there were times we do it crudely, we’re sorry. Whether we feel it’s our duty or our responsibility We do it not by this, but by love and sincerity. Sometimes we felt down, lost and treated with disdain But working together makes a good cure to a great pain. God knows how we were surrounded by challenges, And here we are, no fear, no doubt, and no hopelessness. Some have no idea how we became a part of other’s lives Seeing every family we’ve lifted is already a prize. Living in faith and service is our fascination. So we thank the Almighty for He helps us undertake our Mission. (VICENNEAL came from the Latin words “vicies” (20 times) and “annus” (year) which, when put together, means existing or lasting for 20 years.—ed.)
