    IntroductionTheOfficial ASE Study Guide for the School Bus Testsisintendedtohelptechni-ciansstudyfortheASEcertificationtests.Thespecificmaterialabouteachtest,includedinthebookletisausefultoolforreviewingthetechnicalknowledgethatiscoveredintheSchool Bus tests.Afterperformingathoroughreview,itshouldbeeasiertoselectadditionalreferencematerialthatwillassistyouwiththetestpreparationneeds. ASEvoluntarycertificationisameansbywhichtechnicianscanprovetheirabilitiestothemselves,totheiremployers,andtotheircustomers.BypassingASEtestsyouwillearnthemostvaluablecredentialavailabletoschoolbustechnicians.Becausethetestsaretough,youllhavethesatisfactionofprovingtoyourselfthatyouareamongtheeliteinyourprofession.Whatsmore,thesecredentialsarerecognizedthroughoutthenation.     How Do I Become Certified?TherearecurrentlyseventestsintheSchoolBusTechniciancertificationseries.Ifyoupassoneormoretests,andhaveatleasttwoyearsofhands-onworkingexperienceinschoolbusrepair,thenyouwillbecomecertifiedasanASESchoolBusTechnician.(Appropriatevocationaltrainingmaybesubstitutedforuptooneyearofworkexperience.) IfyoupasstestsS1throughS6,andmeettheexperiencerequirement,youwillearnthecertificateofMasterSchoolBusTechnician. IfyouarecurrentlycertifiedinDieselEngines(A9,H2,S2,orT2) andElectrical/ElectronicSystems(A6,H6,S6,orT6),youareeligibletotaketheL2ElectronicDieselEngineDiagnosisSpecialisttest. Ifyoufailatest,youmaytakeitagainduringanyscheduledtestadmin-istrationinwhichitisoffered.Andremember,youaretheonlyonewhowillreceiveyourtestsscores;resultswillnotbegivenoverthephonenorwilltheybereleasedtoanyonewithoutyourwrittenpermission.

    Who Writes the Questions?Thequestions,writtenbyserviceindustryexpertsfamiliarwithallaspectsofschoolbusrepair,areentirelyjob-related.Theyaredesignedtotestknowledgeoftheskillsthatyouneedinservicingschoolbuses;theoreticalknowledgeisnotcovered. EachquestionhasitsrootsinanASEitem-writingworkshopwhereservicerepresentativesfromschoolbusmanufacturers,aftermarketpartsandequipmentmanufacturers,workingtechniciansandtechnicaleducatorsmeetinaworkshopsettingtoshareideasandtranslatethemintotestquestions.Eachtestquestionwrittenbytheseexpertsmustsurvivereviewbyallmembersofthegroup.Thequestionsarewrittentodealwithpracticalproblemsofdiagnosisandrepairexperiencedbytechniciansintheirday-to-daywork. Fromthere,allquestionsarepre-testedandquality-checkedonanationalsampleoftechnicians.ThosequestionsthatmeetASEstandardsofqualityandaccuracyareincludedinthescoredsectionsofthetests;therejectsaresentbacktothedrawingboardordiscardedaltogether. Eachcertificationtestismadeupofbetween45and55multiple-choicequestions.Thetestingsessionsare4hoursand15minutes,allowingplenty oftimetocompleteseveraltests.

    How Do I Prepare for the ASE Tests?Becomefamiliarwithtestcontentandquestionformat:TheTestSpecificationsinthisbookletcontainasummarydescriptionofthecontentcoveredbyeachtest.TheTaskListsdescribetheactualworkperformedbytechniciansineachspecialtyarea.Together,theseformablueprintforwritingandassemblingtheASEtests.Pleasenotethateachquestiononthetestiskeyed,orlinked,toaparticulartaskorsetoftasksinthetasklist.Therefore,areviewofthetasklists,withaneyetojudgingwhetheryouknowhowtoperformeachtasklisted,willprovideyouvaluableinformationasyouprepareforthetests. Therearefivetypesofmultiple-choicequestionsonthetests,eachofwhichisincludedinthesamplequestionsinthisbooklet.Notethedifferentinstructionsforsomequestions. Besuretoreadeachquestioncarefully,(twice,ifnecessary)sothatyouunderstandexactlywhatisbeingasked.Each question tests a specific diagnostic or repair problem and has only one correct answer.     Serviceorrepairknowledgeandskill:Testsyourunderstandingandabilitytoapplygenerallyacceptedrepairproceduresandprecautionsinassembly,disassembly,andreconditioningoperations;andinmakinginspectionsandadjustments.Alsotestsabilitytouseshopmanualsandprecisiontoolsofthetrade.

    Testinganddiagnosticknowledgeandskill:Testsyourabilitytorecognizeproblemsandtousegenerallyavailablemeasurementandtestingequipmenttomakeadiagnosis.Alsotestsyourabilitytotracetheeffectsofaparticularconditionandfindthecauseofaparticularsetofsymptoms.

    Ifyouareanexperiencedandcompetenttechnician,acarefulreviewofthisbooklet,andadditionalbrush-uponthoseareasinwhichyouareweakest,isallyoushouldneedtopasstheASEtests.

    Before The TestsTrytobewell-restedforthetestsoyouwillbealertandefficient.Ifyouaretak-ingthewrittenversions,pleasebringseveralsharpenedsoft-lead(#2)pencilsandaneraserwithyou;pencilswillnotbefurnishedatthetestcenter.Ifyouwishtopaceyourself,bringawatch;sometestingroomsmaynothaveclocks.Finally,besuretobringalongyourtestcenteradmissionticketandacurrentphotoI.D.

    At the Test CenterSome TipsArriveearlyenoughtofindthebuildingandtestingroom.Whenyoureachthelocation,waitintheassignedareauntiltheproctorbeginsthetestadministration.Heorshewillinstructyouinfillingouttheanswerbooklet(iftakingwrittentests)orloggingontothecomputer(iftakingcomputer-basedtests). Oncetestinghasbegun,keeptrackoftime.Donotspendtoolongonanysinglequestion.Besuretoreadeachquestioncarefullysothatyouunderstandexactlywhatisbeingasked.Donotmarkanswersinthetestbooklet;theymustbemarkedontheanswerbooklet.Yourtestwillnotbescoredifyouranswersarenotonyouranswerbooklet. Ifaquestionisdifficult,marktheanswerthatyouthinkiscorrectandputacheckbyitinthetestbook.(Computer-basedtestsallowyoutodothisonscreen.)Thengoontothenextquestion.Ifyoufinishbeforetimeisup,youmaygobacktothequestionsthatyouchecked.     Test Content and Sample QuestionsThefollowingmaterialisdesignedtohelptechnicianspreparefortheASE certificationtests. EachsectionbeginswiththeTestSpecifications,whichwilllistthemaincategoriescoveredonthatparticulartestandthenumberoftestquestionsandpercentageofthetestdevotedtoeachtopic. TheTaskListdescribestheworkactivitiesatechnicianshouldbeabletoperformineachtechnicalareacoveredonthattest.Thislistwasdevelopedbyworkingtechniciansandtechnicalexpertsfromacrossthecountryandwillpro-videavaluablechecklistofwhattostudyforthetest. Thesetaskdescriptionsofferdetailedinformationtotechnicianspreparingforthetestandtopersonswhomaybeinstructingtechnicians.Thetasklistsmayalsoserveasguidelinesforquestionwriters,reviewers,andtestassemblers. Itshouldalsobenotedthatthenumberofquestionsineachcontentareamaynotequalthenumberoftaskslisted.Someofthetasksarecomplexandbroadinscopeandmaybecoveredbyseveralquestions.Othertasksaresimpleandnarrowinscopeandonequestionmaycoverseveraltasks.Themainobjectiveinlistingthetasksistodescribeaccuratelywhatisdoneonthejob,nottomakeeachtaskcorrespondtoaparticulartestquestion.
