Hospitality:The Apex Club of Leganes

Way

By the time you read thisarticle, you may haveplanned to attend this

year’s National Convention ofApex Malaysia, which kicks-offon August 15, 2014 in Langkawi. If you do not have an idea aboutLangkawi, it is perhaps the mostvisited island resort in Malaysia, located off the west coast ofPeninsular Malaysia.

Actually, Langkawi is acluster of some 99 islands, whichhave many a story to tell. Theselegendary isles, nestled in theAndaman Sea, with white sandybeaches and turquoise waters, will definitely enthrall you.

If, however, you decide toskip Convention D’Helang, youwill be missing a wonderfulopportunity to savor whatMalaysia has to offer. More so,the convention coincides withVisit Malaysia Year 2014. Thisprogram is held once every fewyears to entice travelers to visitMalaysia and enjoy, as well as,partake in its culture andtraditions, food, music andsongs, among other things.

The Malaysian Government, through its Tourism Ministry, pours millions of ringgit intothese programs, to showcase thecountry to the discerningtourist and indeed, tempt thetourist to come over and enjoinin the festivities.

While such festivitiesexpose the tourist to a myriad ofspecially planned programs, oneof the most importantingredients in experiencing theculture of the country is missing.Visitors to a country need to stayand interact with the locals toreally experience the culture anddaily lives of the ordinary people.

On my recent visit to thePhilippines to attend the39th National Convention ofApex Philippines and ApexGlobal change-over on May 24,

By T.T. SINGAMApex Club of Malacca Central

Apex Malaysia

2014, I was lucky enough to beliterally experiencing Filipino life.

This was of course not myfirst experience in staying with thelocals. A few years ago, my wifeand I were home-hosted by mydear friend, Life Governor VicRadar of the Apex Club of SanPablo. It was indeed a thoroughlyenjoyable experience that none ofthe five-star hotels in thePhilippines can offer.

Staying and experiencing thedaily lives of the locals gets evenbetter the second time around. And this time in Leganes.

After a short, but delayed, flight from Manila, our planelanded at the Iloilo airport, prettylate in the evening. The mostlyMalaysian Apexians, and twomore from India, were met onarrival by a welcoming party, made up of Leganes Apexians. Wewere split into two groups andwere immediately whisked awayby Apexian Alain Pulmones tospend the night at the home ofclub President Ren-ren. We werepleasantly welcomed into Ren-ren’s home by his mom and dadand shown to our rooms, whichwere simple and decent.

And that was the beginningof Laganes hospitality!

As we awakened to thecrowing of the cockerels, it feltlike being in the countryside, which I had experienced as ayoung lad in a small town, somewhere in Malaysia.

We were then ushered intothe patio where our breakfastwas laid out...simple but filling. It was time to go to theconvention venue in Leganes.Again, we were chauffeured likeVIPs to our destination.

As we checked into ourhotel rooms, the hospitalityshown by our Leganes Apexianhosts was anything but superb.Nothing was left wanting! Youwant to go shopping, there wassomeone to escort you. You wantto go to “church”, there was asecurity detail, drawn from Alainand Bob, following and keepingan eye on you, among others(sic), at all times. It boils downto logistics and the planning.

What more can these guysof Leganes do? Well, theyshowed us at the pre conventionsocial. And what a venue too!We practically invaded the officesof the Leganes Municipal Mayor.I think Apexian Allen Españo, themunicipality’s Vice Mayor, hada hand in this.

“There is no love sincererthan the love of food” (BernardShaw). This was the best part ofthe evening’s fare...Filipino food.

Tons and tons of lechonbaboy, embutido, menudo, adobo! You name it...it was all laid outfor you to savor. What wasmissing perhaps was my personalfavorite, bulalo. But hey! Therewas a whole calf at the barbequepit...all tasty and yummy, coatedin honey, waiting to be chewedon.

But deep inside, I wanted toget back to life in the Leganescountryside. And my wish wasgranted on the following Sunday, when Alain brought the newly-minted Global Chairman, PratishNand of Fiji, C.S. Gan, ApexPhilippines Ambassador-at-LargeDomz and I to spend the night athis house.

Nestled in a wooded area, itfelt like stepping back in time tothe laid-back life in small-townMalaysia. I do not know if Alainhad an affinity with cockerels, butthey were all over the place. Hisneighbor even had fighting cocks.I wonder what the bets were like!

After settling in, it was party-time! Fellowship all theway....Filipino style....courtesy ofAlain and his charming wife, and other Apexians, namely Ne-an, Saddam, Dexter and ofcourse, big, strong and friendly,David Sinay. The guys rustled upsome tasty, delicious localdelicacies. Then someone wantedto try the dreaded balut! Boy!That was a turn-off!

However, San Miguel savedthe day. Beers were free flowingand the conversation, as usual,zeroed-in on Apex. But thecamaraderie was very muchevident, as the hosts welcomed usinto their fold....warts and all!

Getting Down and Dirtyat our Apex Chalet

By JAMIE VINCENTApex Foundation Director

Apex Australia

3

It all started at the last Zone 9reunion held at Bathurstwhere I did a little talk about

the Chalet (Magic Castle).Keith (Mr Apex) Miller took

it from there and we got startedon the Zone 9 Reunion WorkingBee at the Chalet. We probablytook on a little too much and asthe working bee grew I started toget a little worried that weweren’t going to be able toachieve what we wanted to, so Iput the call out to the Apex clubsthat we needed man power.

I had a phone call fromMathew from Hoppers Crossingand I rang Neal (Mollie) fromSouth Wagga Club and bothApexians took the call outseriously and got the best groupof Apexians I could have askedfor. The working bee went from10 to 23 with two phone calls;Apex is definitely alive andkicking. We got to the Chalet on the Fridaywith materials coming from the

Central Coast of NSW and fromVictoria.

We had the front balconydown on the Friday afternoon andsome of the very big holes dug

ready for the man power on theSaturday morning.

One hundred sixty bags ofconcrete had to be dragged up thehill at the front of the Chalet andit was done with a smile in trueApex spirit. By Saturdayafternoon we had the posts in and

the beams on. I just couldn’tbelieve my eyes; the team wasworking like a fine oiled machine.

Saturday afternoon all thepast Apexians turned up to getready for the week ahead.Saturday night it was great to seeactive Apexians enjoying a quietrefreshment with past Apexiansand we even had twooriginals that

worked on the Chalet when itwas originally built back in the70s and had never seen itfinished.

Sunday lunch time, the boysfrom South Wagga had to go butwe had achieved so much wenearly finished the front balcony.

The railing turned up and it wasall happening, on Monday wehad the front balcony finished, done and dusted. We alsoachieved a great deal of workthat needed to be done as welllike painted the bathrooms andwindows; put non slip treads onthe stairs a new ski rack and asnow remover for the front door.

We as Apexians achieved a

balcony valued at $45,000 retailfor as little as $20,000 thanks tosome of the most dedicatedApexians I have ever had theprivilege to work with. I thankall of you that helped hands onand also the clubs that donatedmoney to help with the costsincluding Blacktown, CentralAustralia, Chinchilla, Hopperscrossing, South Wagga andMaryborough.

Apex membership will help in solving their problem indeclining club membership, but it did not.

Apex Philippines was able to increase club membership from5 in 2012 to 6 active clubs in 2013. But still very far fromthe number of active clubs way back in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Apex India has so many active clubs, but they have not ableto unify their districts and still don’t have a national board.

Let us focus on the good news: it is very interesting to knowhow Apex Bangladesh was able to accomplish such a big number ofactive local clubs (1,728). AFM Anamul Haque MD Jakir Hossainshared some of their good practices and strategy in membershipexpansion as follows:

They do circulation of newsletters and publications whichcontain good Apex Projects and accomplishments. TheProspectians are being invited first to join a certain serviceproject. Once they become interested, it is then that theywill be invited for an Apex meeting. It is better to invite firstfor service project as it is more interesting than Apex meeting

They are targeting technical professionals as Prospectianslike doctors and journalists because doctors will be veryhelpful in medical service projects, likewise, journalists canprovide free media exposure.

One motivation Apex Bagladesh is giving for a prospectivemember is the opportunity to be employed to companiesowned by Apexians.

By joining Apex, member’s needs of getting distinction andrecognition are being satisfied. They also getting businesscontacts which can offer help and opportunities.

An observation was given by PNP Apxn Edward Mai from ApexMalaysia: “Young Apexians can’t talk in Club meetings andconventions as senior Apex members were the ones usually seatingand speaking. The senior members are getting much of the timeallotted for discussion. This made new members and young Apexiansdisappointed.”

This instance is also happening in club meetings and conventionsin Apex Philippines when senior members are trying to oppose orinfluence the decision of the Board on a certain motion or decision.Sometimes, they succeed on their intention but they did not knowhow many young and new members they have disappointed on whatthey have done.

Apex Global AGM delegates also recommended to study andknow what other civic clubs like Rotary is doing or has done in orderto expand their membership as this can be applicable to Apex. So Imade some research on Rotary’s website and found twenty (20)answers on the question “why people join Rotary” from the websiteof Rotary Club of Paramus in NJ USA. Rotary Club of Paramus has100 members and is one of 31,000 local Clubs of Rotary Internationallocated in 166 countries around the world.

It is amazing to know that 20 out of 20 answers given why peoplejoin Rotary are also present in Apex. Top on the lists are: Friendship,Business Development, Personal Growth and Development,Leadership Development, Citizenship in the Community, ContinuingEducation, Fun, Public Speaking Skills, Citizenship in theWorld, Assistance when Traveling, Family Programs, Prestige, NicePeople, the Opportunity to Serve.

We can see that the above mentioned reasons or personal needsare also present in our association but I have chosen two needs whichI think are less satisfied in Apex membership specifically in ApexPhilippines:

1. Prestige. Rotary members are prominent people: leaders ofbusiness, the professions, art, government, sports, military, religion, and all disciplines. Rotary is the oldest and most prestigious service

club in the world. Its ranks include executives, managers, andprofessionals – people who make decisions and influence policy. InApex, members are only recognized in a town or city where there areactive local clubs. There are many instances that if you mention theword “Apex” to your friends, officemates or relatives, they will askyou “what is Apex” not like if you mention the word “Rotary”. Maybethis is not true to all Apex Association like Apex Bangladesh but Ithink majority are experiencing it.

2. Business Development. The second original reason forRotary’s beginning is business development. Everyone needs tonetwork. Rotary consists of a cross section of every businesscommunity. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians helpeach other and collectively help others. I think business developmentis less satisfied in Apex membership because our membership is smalland majority of our members are privately employed. This can beone reason why many businessmen and Prospectians are not motivatedto join Apex.

These two personal needs I have chosen also supported therecruitment strategy given by Apex Bangladesh. So how can weachieve these personal needs? Based on the information presentedfrom Apex Bangladesh and Rotary, I have concluded tworecommendations on how to attain the needs for Prestige and BusinessDevelopment.

First, we must invite prominent individuals in our communitysuch as local leaders, executives and managers, businessmen, andmore professionals like doctors and lawyers.

Second, we can implement higher qualifications for prospectivemembers. Aside from willingness to serve and share his resources forthe benefit of the club and the community, he should have a goodprofessional and/or business career.

I know that the second conclusion will need further study andboard approval, but the first is implementable and already beingpracticed though seldom. I hope that this article can give a betterunderstanding on how we can improve our membership in Apex.

existence, goodwill and tolerance. Our goal is to build a better and stronger Apex family, grow and

develop Apex in the Asia Pacific Region and beyond. We would like to seek the humble support of all Apex Nations

and Apexians for their dedication and commitment in growing ApexGlobally and promoting our 4th Ideal - To promote internationalunderstanding and friendship.”

Very big thanks to Apexian David Israel Sinay for his commitmentand dedication in leading our organization for the year 2013-2014and managed to achieve highest participation of eight Apex Nationsin our AGM for 2014. Congratulations, David.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the members of the ApexClub of Leganes in Leganes, Iloilo, Philippines for making this eventa successful and memorable one. Congratulations and God Bless youall.

WHAT ISAPEX ABOUT?

By M. BELAL HOSSENSecretary, District-3

Apex Bangladesh

It was déjà-vu! The same feeling I experienced in San Pablo, came over me. Fellowship and hospitality, all rolled intoone.....something perhaps only the Filipinos can share.

The only sore point is....these guys can quickly revert back toTagalog or Ilocano, oblivious to our presence there. This is somethingthat has to be worked on, huh.

Anyway, that was not a damper! As the night wound down, wewere all boozed to the hilt and it was time to hit the sack. Was it thebeers or the comfortable feeling that you are back home in your ownbed? Sleep came within seconds.

Now, it is said that to feel the vibrancy or the pulse of a nationand its people, one should go to the market-place. That is somethingone should do when one is in a foreign country.

The next morning, when Domz and Saddam wanted to go to themarket to buy dried fish, which is also a delicacy in Malaysia, withoutany hesitation I tagged along, not realizing that I was dressed only inmy night shorts and a singlet, and wearing Japanese slippers.

The colorful atmosphere in the market, with the incessant chatter, the haggling, the laughter and the din at the Leganes market, made

me step back and enjoy the sightsand sounds of the place. Ladiesmeeting friends, taking time togossip and exchange stories intheir usual animated bodymovements. The shopkeeperswere even talking to me in thelocal dialect. Perhaps theythought I was a magsasaka fromthe province. Or perhaps,a balikbayan. The gaiety and thescenes that I saw at the marketwill surely linger in my mind forsome time.

Well, all good thingshave to come to an end and it

was time to pack-up and head back to Manila to catch the connectingflight back home, with fond memories of the time spent with the guysin Leganes.

The pleasant things that I encountered and experienced duringmy brief stay in Leganes can indeed be attributed to the hospitalityshowered on me and the rest of us by the Apexians of Leganes, howwe were welcomed into their homes. Indeed, we practically had therun of the homes as we were treated like a family member. Surely, theApexians of Leganes are a microcosm of the Philippine nation, wherehospitality abounds.

Now, let’s see what the Apexians of Batangas have in store!

Gathering the majority ofmember nations was such a hugetask but all efforts madeturnedout successful. This is amanifestation howcommunication plays a vital rolein living up with the goals of ApexGlobal – that is, to fosterinternational relations andfriendship.

Technology has made theworld a flat spectrum whereeverybody has comparableopportunities to connect witheach other. It only takes time andeffort to communicate with ourfellow Apexians, here and abroad. The internet is free. We might aswell grab the opportunity.

Making everybody involvedin the discussion was what madethe gathering fruitful.

During the meeting, one ofthe main topics discussed was thedwindling number ofmembership, and how to come upwith strategies in recruiting moremembers. The delegates sharedtheir views and ideas on how toincrease membership.

Apexian A.F.M. Anamul“Mamun” Haque discussed theaggressive increase ofmembership and chartered clubsin Apex Bangladesh. This year, the association has 1,789 activemembers with 89 chartered clubsdistributed among the nine ApexDistricts.

in resurrecting the Association ofApex Clubs of India. He said thatat present there are a few activeclubs in Apex India’s District 1, 5and 7. District 7 has the highestnumber of active clubs with 15.

Apex Sri Lanka’s SriShanmugalingam said that due tothe unstable government broughtby civil disobedience, citizens optto leave their country. From theonce flourishing number ofApexians and Apex Clubs, onlyApex Club of Sri Lanka is leftstanding.

Apex Australia InternationalRelations Officer Craig Martinshared how the association copeswith the present times, one ofwhich is re-structuring thenational board. Before, they havethousands of members but due tosome factors, one of which is age,it drastically dropped.

Apex Malaysia NationalPresident BoovanesvariKanapathy, Apex Singapore

International Relations OfficerJanet Lim and Apex Fiji andDeputy Global Chairman PratishNand likewise shared their ideason how their respectiveassociation addresses theconcern.

Further, Apex PhilippinesNational President Necomedes“Nonoy” Ubal shared the variousprojects undertaken by theassociation in communities vastlyaffected by Typhoon Haiyan, particularly in northern Iloilo.

The projects include thedistribution of relief goods, providing of roofing materials todamaged schools, feeding of daycare pupils, distribution of schoolmaterials, and distribution ofmotorized fishing boats, amongothers.
