Members of the O’Neal Community:

As I celebrate my first year anniversary at O’Neal, I think about the many new acquaintances I have made since my arrival and some of the changes that have been put into place. Even more so, I’m eager to continue to culti-vate O’Neal making it a place of more “real world” experiences for our students.

Everyone has a unique definition of the term “real world experience”. Could it be using cutting edge technol-ogy, or focusing on the global community as much as the local community? Could it be living in the elements and not being sheltered? In my commencement speech I gave graduates advice on entering the “real world” as they turn the page in their journey of life. They are as follows: 1. enjoy the journey, admire the scenery and take detours 2. Seek happiness in doing your own work and do it for yourself and not to satisfy others. 3. Don’t miss the opportunities given to you. Take risks, accept failure and learn from it. 4. Do not live to work, but work to live and understand that there is more to your life than just your career.

So as O’Neal encroaches on its 40th birthday, it is my wish to continue to improve how we prepare our students for the “real world”. Why can’t learning be a “real world” experience in itself? Whether it is by improving technology in the classroom, expanding curriculum and foreign exchange opportunities as well as other summer programs, O’Neal is moving towards the forefront of global learning.

Have a safe and restful summer and enjoy reading The O’Neal Magazine!

O’Neal wants to thank all of you who supported the O’Neal Fund during its inaugural year. Thanks to the efforts of the O’Neal family, the 2009/2010 O’Neal Fund raised $137,175 which went to the enrichment activities that were designated by the 46% of parents who participated. While the School did not raise as much money or achieve as much parent participation as it had hoped, the launch of this new approach that allows the entire O’Neal community to have input into the School’s spending priorities was a great suc-cess.

The money raised for the O’Neal Fund was used for a variety of enrichment purposes – above and beyond the classroom - including:

• Props and costumes for the drama production, Much Ado About Nothing

• Middle School Intramural Program• Lower School After-School Clubs• Development of the new Upper School Prefect

Leadership Program to promote school-wide unity and awareness

• 1st Annual Arts in April – to showcase student art in all forms

• New user-friendly website• Film productions and festival

Stan and Jean Bradshaw, O’Neal Fund Chairs, stated, “We are very grateful to the O’Neal community for supporting our students this year through the new O’Neal Fund. This fund enables our students to not only experience excellence in the classroom but also through other activities such as athletics, the fine arts and leadership programs.”

Thank you to Stan and Jean, as well as all O’Neal Fund grade level chairs, faculty chairs, gGrandparent and past parent chairs, and all O’Neal Fund participants for helping to make the first O’Neal Fund such a great success!

As a portion of the first annual “Arts in April,” a combination

of choral, dance and instrumental concerts(above) were attended by members of the O’Neal family

- including (right) cast members

of O’Neal’s first drama produc-

tion - “Much Ado About Nothing”

O’Neal athletics has completed its second year in the new Cape Fear Independent Conference. The level of competi-tion in the CFIC conference is strong and O’Neal continued to meet the challenge. All Conference and Honorable Mention selectees were recognized in three of the four spring confer-ence sports.

All Conference:Baseball; Jordan Hunt, Derek AilersonSoccer; Abbey Dahl, Maggie JacksonTennis: Corbin O’Donnell

Honorable Mention:Soccer: Jackie Chamberlain, Madelyn DavisTennis: Bryce Baldelli

For the last two years the CFIC junior varsity model of fielding teams inclusive of grades 7-10 for boys and girls soccer programs was used. After an extensive review, The O’Neal School has decided to return the traditional middle school make up of using seventh and eighth graders. In addition, O’Neal has joined the SEMSAC middle school conference which includes teams from the Fayetteville area. This move will cut down on travel and missed class time as well as place O’Neal in a more competitive league.

O’Neal Summer Fun

O’Neal’s campus was alive and busy as O’Neal Summer Fun hosted many different camps for O’Neal and non-O’Neal youth in the community. There were close to 200 registrations for the O’Neal Summer Fun camps. In addition to the traditional Falcon Day Camp, other camps offered a variety of sports, creative writing, the outdoors, math, cheerleading, music, art, a preschool day camp and more. As the offerings expanded this summer, there were programs available for youth of all ages.
