welcome to pearl valley the month

SepteMBer 2013

Dear Members, Residents and VisitorsWelcome to the September edition of The Pearl Valley Month. It is hard to believe that we are already three quarters of the way through 2013!

Despite the chilly weather and occasional downpour, August was a good month at Pearl Valley. We ran a number of exciting marketing initiatives, including a very popular Women’s Day Facebook competition.

On 27 August we hosted the First Residents Golf Day in honour of the first residents moving onto the Estate in 2003. The day was a huge success and we look forward to it becoming an annual event. Thank you to all those who participated and a BIG thank you to Dr Ernest Messina for his contribution to the day. We then ended the month on a high with our Ernie Els Food and Wine Pairing Dinner.

Not only does September mark the start of spring, but also the start of a new and very special event at Pearl Valley. On 27 September we host our much anticipated inaugural Celebrity Golf Day in aid of The Sunflower Fund. We’ve lined up some fabulous celebrities as well as awesome entertainment and prizes so be sure to book your fourball today! For more information on the Pearl Valley Celebrity Golf Day please turn to the back page of The Pearl Valley Month.

Wishing you all a wonderful and happy September!

Update on SecUrity By Pearl Valley Risk and Security Manager, Adriaan Bosch

At Pearl Valley we pride ourselves on offering our residents, members and guests a safe and secure envi-ronment in which to enjoy our beautiful Estate. I believe our security facilities, including a secure ther-mal camera-equipped perimeter fence, manned entrance and exit booms and a highly skilled response

unit, secure Pearl Valley’s position as one of the safest Estates in South Africa.Sadly, South Africa is facing a crime epidemic and all of us have been affected either directly or indirectly as

a result. Unfortunately, at this time of year, crime does appear to be on the increase and there has been a spate of burglaries in the Winelands area recently.

Knowledge and research provide us with the best possible deterrent in the war against crime. A better un-derstanding of criminal behavior will help us to discourage intruders and therefore minimise risk. With this in mind consider these recent trends,

• Eight out of 10 house robberies are committed with the help of insiders such as domestic workers, gardeners and former employees

• Robbers monitor target homes for as long as two weeks• Gangs research security firms’ response times• More attacks occur between 7pm and midnight• 97% of robbers are armed• Robbery gangs average four in number• 50% of residential robberies happen in Gauteng• On average, house robbers are aged 19-26 years• On average, 30% of house robbers have either committed murder or are prepared to do so• Of all arrested robbers, 90% had no matric or were unemployed. Most employed people gave up their

jobs when they discovered that robbery was more lucrative• The average robber commits 103 robberies over seven years before being caught• Most attackers live or are based 10 to 30 minutes drive from the target address• The conviction rate for house robberies in South Africa is just 7.3% compared with 53% in the US• Robbers are not deterred by alarms and armed response agencies• Robbers are more often deterred by electric fences, detection beams, CCTV and, considered by robbers

as the biggest deterrent of all, small dogs that sleep inside the house.

I always say that where opportunity exists crime persists. The Pearl Valley security team works continuously to eradicate all areas of opportunity. I would like to assure members and residents that we are aware of the local and national crime trends and we have adopted a prevention rather than cure approach.

Try this easy arrangement if you need a bit of height on your coffee table.

YOU’LL NEED:• A bunch of Restio leaves• 5-7 flowers of your choice - I used red

pincushions• Tortured Willow branches• Special test tubes(available at all major

florists)• Rubber band• Secateurs• A tall container to hold your Restio

leaves

1. Place Restio leaves in container, use as many as possible.

2. Choose a height that will give you the necessary length without making the arrangement unstable. Cut off any excess leaves.

3. Hold the top together with a rubber band.

4. Hide the rubber band with Tortured Willow branches.

5. Fill test tubes with water.6. Remove all the leaves from the flowers,

cut off most of the stems and place flowers in test tubes.

7. Arrange the flowers around your column of Restio leaves.

Enjoy choosing a spot to display your arrangement and when the flowers are no longer fresh simply replace with new flowers of your choice.

If you ask any golfer what he would like to improve about his game the answer is pretty clear: to hit the ball straighter. The only way to hit a straight shot is if your clubface is square to your swing path.

When you put the club down at address it is easy to see if your club is square to your target, but how do you determine whether the club is square at the top of your swing? Have a look at your left wrist po-sition.

If your clubface is open at the top of your swing, in other words, pointing more towards the ground

you are cupping your wrist (top left). This can make you hit the most hated shot in golf, a slice.

If the clubface is closed at the top of your swing, pointing towards the sky, you are bowing your wrist (bottom left). This can cause a hook. If you take a look at a player like Dustin Johnson, his club-face is a similar position at the top of his swing.

The clubface is square when it is parallel to the forearm (right). When the clubface is in this posi-tion it’s easier to be square at impact. Check your wrist position at the top for straighter shots.

AWARD-WINNING lifestyle and golf destination, Pearl Valley Golf Estates, has partnered with The Sun-flower Fund, hosting a charitable hole-in-one at the inaugural Pearl Valley Annual Celebrity Golf Day on 27 September 2013.

With proceeds going to The Sunflower Fund, the Pearl Valley Annual Celebrity Golf Day will consist of a full field of 128 Golfers of 32 four balls, each including one celebrity ambassador from either Media, Entertainment, Sport or Corporate circles. The celebrity ambassadors include Ryan O’Connor, Benito Vergotine, Dr Michael Mol, Breyton Paulse, Corne Krige, Ryk Neethling, Reuben Riffel, Barry Richards, Paul Adams, Brian McMillian, Jeremy Harris, Jean Smyth and Matthew Pearce amongst others.

The Sunflower Fund actively raises funds to increase bone marrow stem cell donors in South Africa, and sup-port those in need of a bone marrow transplant due to leukemia, or other life-threatening blood disorders. The cause holds a special significance for Pearl Valley, as the Estate’s General Manager, Gawie Marx, is himself a leu-kemia survivor. In remission for 15 years post bone marrow transplantation Marx believes that the Pearl Valley Annual Celebrity Golf Day is a cause worthy of widespread support:

“The Sunflower Fund stands for a vital cause, and we at Pearl Valley believe that this event will garner great support for the wonderful work that they do. Having survived leukemia and a transplant, I know the importance of this charity on a personal level. I hope that the public will come out to support this amazing event, and have a great deal of fun whilst doing so,” says Marx.
