very new year is a time for reflection and, in Relapse’s case, a time for celebration and appreciation. January 2013 marks our one-year anniversary and, for this issue, the Photo Annual, I’ve chosen to showcase 13 photographers with the simple assign-

ment to shoot something that best represents them as an artist. They are the core group of fashion and photojournalistic contributors that have lead the progression of Relapse since its inception a year ago. I have also chosen a few new faces who help continue to keep Relapse as the quintes-sential New York City fashion and culture magazine. Photography is an essential component of magazine publish-ing, especially at this publication and this issue specifically. I’ve chosen to focus on each photographer’s personal viewpoint of his or her subject, whether it be hip hop game-changers in New York City as seen in Jes-sica Lehrman’s “The New New York,” or a thematic fashion story, uti-lizing clothing, emotion, and photographic execution as its main source of storytelling and the transference of a succinct message. We see this in Cole Barash’s “Between Two Rivers,” Tyler Mitchell’s “At the Hip,” Michael Tessier’s “Come Clean,” Dario Calmese’s “#inserttitlehere,” and Jeff Tse’s cover editorial “Veiled,” a story that, at its core, touches upon one of the mantras of Relapse: That a beautiful image can say more than a well-know face; that, above anything else, the expression of the photogra-pher will always be more powerful than a predetermined image or subject that is nothing more than popular at the given time. That, behind a glossy cover littered with bolded text and exclamation points, it’s merely some-thing trying to sell prints in the most superficial way. The photography used on our covers, and in this issue, is the opposite of the traditionalisms of magazine publishing. I’ve always chosen to let the photographs speak for themselves. And they have. The photographs that have appeared in Relapse, and especially in this issue, have truly spoken to the heart of photography: personal expression. It’s the foundation which makes every photographer pick up the camera for the first time, and what keeps them continually pushing that button. If you’re a photographer, you know it’s true. There’s a part of you in every photograph you take. Your flesh. Your blood. So, pick up the camera. Frame the shot. Push the button. Point. Flash. Red.

Sacha LeccaShowcasing his personal love for longboarding in “Broadway Sessions,” Sacha Lecca makes his first appearance in Relapse, compiling years of pho-tographs of the ever-growing rat pack of longboarders in New York City into his story. Currently Senior Photo Editor at Rolling Stone, Lecca has worked at various magazines since the mid-1990s including Newsweek. But what’s your fun-fact of the day? Lecca’s is that is he a Viscount (one step under a prince) in his homeland Romania and has to wear a special hat every time he flies into the country. Boom! Beat that.

The Machine.

Jeff TseGracing the cover of the Photo Annual with his simplistic but emotional editorial “Veiled,” Jeff Tse showcases the foundation of his talent as a photographer: exploration. Defined by the relationship of light and form, Tse’s photography is at the forefront of fashion, producing timelessness and beauty that has garnered him credits in publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, Allure, Teen Vogue, Seventeen, Elle, and Cosmopolitan; and with a client list stretching from Dior to Covergirl.

Arthur Belebeau“I fell in love with New York City. I wanted to start my career there,” con-fided Arthur Belebeau, who makes his debut in Relapse with “Never Odd or Even.” Originally starting assisting professionally at Daylight Studios in Paris, Belebeau quickly settled down in the States in his early twenties where he met his wife Juliette, also from Paris, with whom he has two young daughters. Although taking photos of people ranging from Kim Kardashian to Katy Perry, Belebeau’s claim to fame is more natural than professional. “I am the happiest father on the planet,” he said.

Lauren TempleCurrently a student at Fashion Institute of Technology, Lauren Temple is also assistant to Fashion Director Ise White, balancing in-class education with real-life experience. Temple has been on set for photoshoots that have appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and Marie Claire. She styled “Hog’s Tooth,” for the End of the World Issue of Relapse alongside photographer Tyler Mitchell, and took hold of three photoshoots for the Photo Annual: again with Mitchell on “At the Hip,” with Molly Goldrick on “Behind the Mirror,” and with Cole Barash’s “Between Two Rivers,” which opens this issue.
