What is the Renaissance?

• 1300 to 1600

• An explosion of creativity in Europe.

• Began in Italy and spread north.

• France and England were locked in the Hundred Years' War.

• Focus on humankind as the center of intellectual and artistic endeavor.

Martin Luther

• Indulgences = absolution for sins → CORRUPT

• 1517 – Posted “95 Theses” that challenged the

Church.

• Christian belief should be based on the Bible,

not the authority of the pope.

• Translated the 1st German Bible.

• Protesters became known as Protestants.

• Germans & Scandinavians largely converted

• Peasants often defied masters by adopting different faith

• Council of Trent – prohibited indulgences; reaffirmed all other teachings.
