FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DINGA

Jesus is preparing to leave his disciples. They have been together for three years now, shar-ing memories and experiencing unforgettable events and stories along the way. The separation Jesus is about to make is difficult for all. While he truly is the Messiah and Savior, he is also a friend to his fol-lowers. He does not want them to see this departure as if he is abandoning them, but as a part of the larg-er plan of the Father.

Jesus chooses words that are clear and sin-

cere- he has to return to his Father to continue what

they began long ago. Jesus reminds them that even though they will no longer see him, he will never abandon them because the Holy Spirit will be with them.

And so mindful that the solemnities of the

Ascension and Pentecost are upon us, our readings today turn our minds to these events in our salvation history. John’s Gospel wants us to realize that we can truly know Jesus in our lives. In our passage to-day we revisit Jesus’ promise to send another “Paraclete” to be with us always, translated for us as “Advocate.” There is only one criterion for the com-ing of the Advocate: that we love Jesus and that our love be demonstrated by keeping his commands.

If we love Jesus- which means being obedi-

ent to his word- we will acquire the courage Chris-tians must have to live in our world today. Moreo-ver, if we love as we are asked, we are assured that we will see Jesus! Jesus loves his disciples now and always. He invites them to remember this above all else. Love is the bond between Jesus and his fol-lowers and between us and one another, no matter where we go, no matter what happens.

And so I think all of us can be encouraged in

this regard by a quote from St. Francis de Sales, Bishop and Doctor of the Church: “Do not think the Lord is far from us when we are experiencing diffi-culties. It is not tranquility that brings the Lord near to our hearts, but the faithfulness of our love.”

This coming Thursday, May 21, the Church

celebrates the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. For ty days after Easter , we acknowledge the Lord’s return to the Father where lives forever to make intercession for us and his promise to send the Holy Spirit to empower us to go and live the mission he has entrusted to us. We will provide the live-stream Vigil Mass for this great feast on Wednesday, May 20 at 7:00 PM.

We are grateful that as of this past Friday, all

of the churches in the Diocese of Greensburg are permitted to be reopened for private prayer. Please consult the schedule in this bulletin or on our Face-book page or website for the hours which each of our partner parishes will be open for prayer until further notice. We of course continue to look for-ward to when, hopefully soon, we are able to once again gather for the public celebration of Mass.

Novena to the Holy Spirit

Friday after Ascension Thursday -- Saturday, the Vigil of Pentecost

This is the prototype of all novenas. It commemorates the nine days between the Ascension of Our Lord and the de-scent of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost Sunday. Dur-ing this time Our Lady and the twelve Apostles prayed in the upper room for the coming of the Paraclete. O Holy Spirit, O my God, I adore Thee, and acknowledge, here in Thy divine presence, that I am nothing and can do nothing without Thee. Come, great Paraclete, Thou father of the poor, Thou comforter the best, fulfil the promise of our blessed Savior, Who would not leave us orphans, and come into the mind and the heart of Thy poor, unworthy creature, as Thou didst descend on the sacred day of Pente-cost on the holy Mother of Jesus and on His first disciples. Grant that I may participate in those gifts which Thou didst communicate to them so wonderfully, and with so much mercy and generosity. Take from my heart whatever is not pleasing to Thee, and make of it a worthy dwelling-place for Thyself. Illumine my mind, that I may see and under-stand the things that are for my eternal good. Inflame my heart with pure love of Thee, that I may be cleansed from the dross of all inordinate attachments, and that my whole life may be hidden with Jesus in God. Strengthen my will, that I may be made conformable to Thy divine will, and be guided by Thy holy inspirations. Aid me by Thy grace to practice the divine lessons of humility, poverty, obedience, and contempt of the world, which Jesus taught us in His mortal life.

Oh, rend the heavens, and come down, consoling Spirit! that inspired and encouraged by Thee, I may faithfully comply with the duties of my state, carry my daily cross most patiently, and endeavor to accomplish the divine will with the utmost perfection. Spirit of love! Spirit of purity! Spirit of peace! Sanctify my soul more and more, and give me that heavenly peace which the world cannot give. Bless our Holy Father the Pope, bless the Church, bless our bish-ops, our priests, all Religious Orders, and all the faithful, that they may be filled with the spirit of Christ and labor earnestly for the spread of His kingdom.

O Holy Spirit, Thou Giver of every good and perfect gift, grant me, I beseech Thee, the intentions of this novena. May Thy will be done in me and through me. Mayest Thou be praised and glorified forevermore! Amen.

The officers of St. John the Evangelist R.A.C.M. made the decision to cancel the Thursday, May 28th meeting due the coronavirus problem. The next scheduled meeting will be September 24 in the St. John Parish Center. We hope and pray that everyone stays safe and healthy and has a wonderful summer. The rosary will be prayed 6pm Wednesday, May 20 and May 27 at St. Rose. Everyone is welcome to attend and pray with us as we honor our Blessed Mother.

THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has

come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem

and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth."

And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their

sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went,

behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking

into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven,

will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.

Acts of the Apostles 1:8-11
