Heartbreaking decision costs Academy dearly

Thirty three Academy students travelled to Sunny Wales on the May holiday weekend to battle against the odds and play against some of the UK’s toughest opposition. The ‘favourites’ in the form of the 1998 School

of Excellence did not play as well as expected in the tournament and ‘slipped up’ in some of the earlier games and ended up coming in third. The little ones performed ‘as well as could be expected’ but the

surprise squad were the mini sevens group. Strengthened by two of our younger ‘School of Excellence’ players – Gary Keenan and Samuel Bullough, this group of battlers fought their way to a famous final

against Liverpool’s Nursery side – Olympia FC – and unfortunately lost the final 1-0. The most annoying factor was the fact that the goal was scored in the final 30 seconds of the game when we needed only a

DRAW – to move on and win the tournament. Fate ??? or What !!!

Money for goals

It has been common knowledge for several months now, that ‘incentives’ have been getting offered to students in the form of cash rewards for the scoring of goals. Now this is clearly none of my business, until the point where it is affecting team performance. It has been clearly recognisable in recent weeks now, where I have been involved with all squads, that players are becoming ‘greedy’ and some of this greed relates directly to this form of incentive. There are at least eight or nine students under this type of ‘contract’. I can only ask, as I cannot dictate, if parents will refrain from using this form of incentive to encourage students to play well. Players should be naturally motivated to play football and not need this type of ‘bribery’ It is a team game and players should be encourged to pass the ball instead of just trying to score goals. Also, other players (particularly defenders) see this type of reward happening and are now asking parents if they can ‘play other positions’. It is causing problems – so I would really, really appreciate it if this type of ‘perk’ could be withdrawn. If you MUST reward players, then please make it for good play rather than ‘goal scoring’.

Un-reported 1998/99 games I apologise for not keeping you all up to date with the Thursday night scores for the 1999 Group and the 1998 improvers group. This will be rectified in next week’s Newsletter.

THE GREATEST PENALTY KICK COMPETITION IN THE WORLD Every year, the ACADEMY run their ‘famous’ PENALTY KICK COMPETITION. We will, this year, be running it for two age groups : 1998 Age Group, and the 1999 / 2000 Age Group, and there are some fantastic trophies to be won. This year there will be first, second and third prizes to be won and will be presented at the Awards Ceremony at Hampden on the 27th May….. The rules are very simple. Each player takes ten penalties, and whoever scores the most ‘wins’ !!! If there are any EQUAL ….we go to SUDDEN DEATH. Anyone who ‘misses’ goes out. LAST THREE LEFT…are the winners AND runners-ups (2nd and 3rd places). The purpose of this competition is to raise much needed funds for the upgrading of equipment. This will benefit ALL Academy students. The equipment we have is falling apart. Attached to this Newsletter is a SHEET. Keep this ….do not throw it away…..as this is your sponsor sheet. If you get your Newsletters by email…you will have to print it out. TWO ways of filling it out. If you use the sponsorship method….lets assume that the student scores 6 out of 10 penalties….and qualifies….then scores another 2 before he goes out….his total penalties scored would be 8. Now if his Dad sponsored him for ₤1 per penalty…then his dad owes him ₤8. If his Aunt Mary sponsored him 50p per penalty…she owes him ₤4 ….and so on !!! If you get the whole family on his sheet, and all your neighbours, and all his teachers, and all your workmates I am sure you will fill the card. A large amount of students who used this method last year got between 50 and a hundred pounds collected. OR MORE SIMPLY….the donation method. You just get as many people as you possibly can on the card. Get them to sponsor the student for say ₤5…and you simply collect the money. It does not matter how many goals the student scores…the sponsorship amount remains the same.

OR YOU CAN HAVE A MIXTURE OF BOTH……. THE PENALTY KICK COMPETITION WILL START AT 10.00 AM ON SUNDAY 14th MAY 2006 AT RICHMOND PARK FOR ALL STUDENTS REGARDLESS OF AGE GROUP (INCLUDING ALL BRAND NEW PLAYERS). PLEASE BE THERE FOR 9.15 AM….THE SUNDAY MORNING GROUP WILL BE DOING THE PENALTY COMPETITION ON THE SUNDAY MORNING ALSO (INSTEAD OF TRAINING) ……

THEREFORE SUBSCRIPTION MONEY WILL BE COLLECTED……

After the penalty competition….you will have a WEEK to hand in

the sponsorship money. So start collecting those names now please !!!

There will ALSO be a PARENTS / COACHES penalty kick competition.

Any parent and/or coach who wish to enter this competition DO NOT have to take a sponsor form…they will simply pay a ₤10 entry fee for Club funds.

Give this money to Theresa BEFORE the competition and you can take your kick on

the Sunday. Women (MUMS) too …have a go…it only costs a tenner !!!

‘APPRENTICE’ WEEK-END

As I mentioned last week, I am going to be running an end of the year Coaching Weekend Workshop on a ‘first come first served’ basis as soon as I can get a venue arranged. I have done this quite often in years gone by. Because of the demand, we are probably going to have to run TWO workshops at two different levels on two different week-ends. Details will be announced very soon. The course will be named ‘A Week-end in the Life of an Apprentice Footballer’ and it will involve the youngsters going through ‘life’ as an Apprentice would. It will probably be a three day course and it will be residential. They will be up at the crack of dawn every day, will train doing the exact same duties as an apprentice would, and the same training, will be fed like an apprentice, and will wash up like an apprentice. The following ‘students’ have booked on the course.

1. David Thomson 2. Aiden Gray 3. Gary Keenan 4. Sean Hughes 5. Jamie Love 6. Callum Gibson 7. Calum Mc Donald 8. Ryan Love 9. Ryan Kane 10. Paul O Hara 11. Liam Burt 12. Ross Lyon 13. Darren Gough 14. Alex Keenan 15. John Smith 16. Scott Ballantyne 17. Ryan Coulter 18. Christopher Sands 19. Anthony Ralston

We are probably looking at TWO groups of TEN …so as you can see there is still ONE

place left. (I will however increase numbers should the need arise.) The following ‘helpers’ are also booked on at their request.

• Bobby Mc Donald (Coach) • Aldo Thomson (Coach) • Derek Mc Donald (Coach) • Gary Keenan (nominated by wife) • Paul Hughes (nominated by wife) • Theresa O Hara + two children • Lynne Gibson (nominated by husband) • George Ralston • Paul Coulter (Coach) • Brian Adams

There will also be non-residential coaches available at this weekend. CAN ALL

COACHES WHO ARE NOT GOING ‘RESIDENTIAL’ PLEASE ADVISE ME OF THEIR AVAILIBILITY AS SOON AS THE DATES ARE ANNOUNCED.

• When the 1998 Improvers are playing, Ian Downs will contact those involved by the Tuesday night of the week in question. He will ONLY ring players who have been selected to participate. Squads are now being reduced to TEN PLAYERS as from NOW.

• When the 1999 Squad are playing, Alistair Whyte will contact those involved by the Tuesday night of the week in

question. He will ONLY ring players who have been selected to participate. Squads are now being reduced to TEN PLAYERS as from NOW. We have got to remember that this group are playing one year out of their age group and results do not really matter – they are only in this league for the experience.. It will have been noticed that we have included some full 1998 Academy players to keep the scores respectable ….but this practice will slowly come to an end. They will over the next two months have to fight their own battles….but when they play in their own age Group come September…they should be unstoppable. Please support these youngsters and encourage them. For goodness sake – some of them ventured to Wales and played almost two years out of their age group because of the difference in age groupings down there.

• There are a number of students who are still not ready to participate in regular football. These are known as ‘fringe’

players. There will be a meeting of the parents of these fringe players in the next couple of weeks to explain our plan of action to get these students involved in playing regular football as soon as possible. Ian Downs and Alistair Whyte will advise you of when this meeting is likely to be.

• Fringe players will be indicated in the updated squads list being published in this newsletter next week. There are a

number of new players coming along over the next few weeks. These players will be allocated a squad once their skill has been assessed, and once they have made the commitment to play.

• The NEW GRADINGS will be announced the week after the Annual Awards Ceremony at Hampden Park.

• I HAVE DECIDED THAT ALL THE ‘MEDALS’ THAT EVERYONE HAS HANDED IN FOR THE AWARDS

CEREMONY WILL NOT BE PRESENTED ON THE NIGHT. I WILL MAKE THESE AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE AFTER THE AWARDS NIGHT. TO INCLUDE THEM WOULD TAKE TOO LONG AND DRAG THE NIGHT OUT.

Snippets

• I have ONE prize for this year’s annual Awards Ceremony at Hampden Park. The idea was to have EVERY family hand in something and we would have 50 prizes. Can you please bring along your PRIZES now >>>

• I was absolutely amazed to find that down in Wales and last night in the Thursday Summer

League games that students were wearing studs that were either steel or that have steel tips. Even one student had steel tipped blades. THESE STUDS ARE BANNED….students found to be wearing them will get a ‘ban’ from playing football for a month and the Club will be banned from participating in games for a month. So please….rubber moulded only if at all possible.

• Can parents of the 1999 and the 1998 Improvers Squads please participate in helping to put up

the goals at Richmond Park on Thursday nights. (also to take them down). This is a crucial part of the ‘team building’ that we are trying to create. It is just unfair to expect the coaches and also parents who’s son’s do not even play in these games…to put up the goals. I am afraid that if we do not get a better response then I will be forced to play all games away from home. It makes sense…we are supposes to be one big happy family. With the full Academy squads we even have the Mums putting up nets and collecting cones !!!

• Scotland Boys Club are going to be running their own ‘Summer Football Festival’ at Richmond

Park in the not too distant future. Watch this space for further details. Brian Adams will be responsible for co-ordinating this event.

• Photos for 1998 Improvers and the 1999 Squad are now available for purchase.

• We need a person (qualified and trained) …a professional to VIDEO the Annual Awards

Ceremony. If you know of anyone can you please approach me NOW …it is getting quite urgent now. You need to get me a price as soon as possible…….I am sure he would get lots of of orders from the amount of people that are there.

• I still need someone to help co-ordinate the ‘SHOW’ ….someone who is not involved with the

Acts but who can get it running like a little sewing machine.

• There are quite a few of you who have NOT GIVEN ME YOUR EMAIL so that I can send these Newsletters by email instead of printing them out. Problem is, I sent out 35 emails last week with this newsletter attached, and I printed out thirty copies = 65. We only have 50 something students at the moment…so where are all the Newsletters going ? If you get the Newsletter by email, please do not take a paper copy.

• There have been the usual ‘pile’ of invites into tournaments landed on my desk in recent

weeks….once I get round to opening them….I will advise you of all the exotic places we will be venturing into. Watch this space.

• The next page is your PENALTY CARD ….please print it out if you have not

already done so. We need the cash collected the week after the competition at the latest please.

• And finally ….we have (hopefully) Iain Houston (ex-Partick Thistle and Morton

goalkeeper) joining the Academy tonight as our new Goalkeeping Coach and hopefully we can persuade him to stay.
