Q & A with Mrs. Brooks
Why did you become a teacher? I became a teacher because I LOVE those lightbulb moments! You know, when you hear a student say "Ooooh! I get it now!" Oh, and I love the summers off! What you enjoy about teaching? My favorite thing about teaching is seeing students who think they are horrible at math SUCCEED. To help a student's confidence grow is awesome!!! Describe your favorite unit to teach. My favorite unit?! Hmmm. That's hard. I would have to say the Equaon of a Circle unit ‐ we get to do a really fun art acvity with this that lets the kids show their personalies!! But Trig is fun too‐‐it's hard work but it's great to see the kids "get it"!! Or slope in Algebra! I can't decide. Hahaha! Finally, what are your hobbies? Favorite book? Food? I love to run and li weights, play in our garden, and watch my kids play sports! I have lots of books I enjoy, but I really enjoy collecng them more than reading them‐‐I have a stack of about 10 books I want to read when I have some free me‐‐in June! I LOVE sushi and coffee!

Mr. Bowles
Mr. Bowles is a pre‐algebra teacher who has been teaching for very long time and has been working here since it has opened a few years ago. According to Mr. Bowles this was not a hard subject to teach at all to a grade level such as 6th graders, it was only a hard for the students. The only hard part is to get the 6th graders to adjust to a harder math level such as Pre‐Algebra since most of them are coming from ifth grade math. Mr. Bowles has been working in this school system for many years and is loved very much by his students. Mr. Bowles has instructed more than just math including subjects such as Language arts, science, and creative problem solving. Mr. Bowles is an amazing teacher that will be missed by his faculty members and students. Written by: Lillian Hairston.
SCG PTA Spaghetti Dinner This Spaghetti Dinner wasn’t just any dinner. It was Pokemon themed! Michelle Hsu, Kaitlyn Hsu, and Sarah helped host this night. Over 200 people came! Most people ate spaghetti with a breadstick, a side of salad, and a choice of either a cupcake, a brownie, or a soda. You could also win prizes like stuffed animals, balloons,
Pokemon cards, goodies, and more! There was activities like a Scavenger Hunt, Name that Pokemon, DIY Pokeball, face paint, and more! But the most surprising of all is when Dr. Crum dressed up as a Pikachu. I also got feedback from Trent Sommerfeldt saying “It was fun and cool.” That’s what happened. Written by: Amaris Anthony

In this book you hear from a couple different people on August’s life. August’s mom wants him to go to Beecher Prep, the hardest middle school to get into. His dad on the other hand didn't want him to go. August ends up going to Beecher Prep. Before school started the principal allowed him to take a tour. Three kids gave him the tour, Charlotte, Jack Will, and Julian. After the tour August made a deal with his parents, if he goes he can stop whenever he wanted to.
BOOK REVIEW Calling all Harry Potter fans and enthusiasts, a new book has been released ! Although not an oficial book the play script is just as good as the series. It takes place when Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny are all grown up , married , and have kids. The youngest of Harry and Ginny's children , Albus , goes on some crazy adventures with Draco’s child Scorpius and uncovers the mystery of Voldemort’s supposed child.

Halloween was August’s favorite holiday. Mostly because he could wear a mask and no one will notice him. The school allowed the kids to wear costumes to school on Halloween. He told everyone that he was going to be Boba Fett. On the day of Halloween because the were running late August put on his costume from the year before which was a bleeding scream costume. When August got to school he he heard three people talking about him. They didn't realize that was August because of his costume and August found out that they were saying mean things about him. Then after that 5th grade went on a trip to a nature camp. The nature camp had a show night every year. This year it was The Sound of Music. During the middle of the movie Jack had to use the bathroom but the line was too long so Jack went into the forest to use the bathroom. On their way out of the forest they ran into some 7th graders. The 7th graders started making fun of August At the graduation ceremony August got an award that named him the most accomplished student in 5th grade. Want to hear/read more you can get this book at our Spratley Gifted Center Library or you can buy it at your nearest book and ebook retailer.

When it comes to fantasy football there is some people you may want on you team. If you want a quarterback you want people like Dak Prescott, Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. If you want playmakers you want people like Antonio Brown, Odell Beckham Jr., Ezekiel Elliott or David Johnson. And for defense you need a defense like the Minnesota Vikings defense, Denver Bronco defense or Green Bay Packer defense. If you want to be successful in fantasy football make sure you have some of these players and you should be pretty good to go. By: William Warren

Art tips #1: Introduction to Digital Part 1 The concept of digital art is pretty self explanatory: Art drawn on a computer. Although, becoming a
digital artist can be easier said than done. Let's go step by step to get started:
1. Getting hardware To start working, you’ll need something to work on. A laptop? iPad? Phone? A laptop is probably the best option, although the most expensive. You have the most freedom with programs, a bigger screen, and just generally more to work with. If you can't get that, a tablet is a great replacement, and easier to carry around. I can say that drawing on a phone is not very fun at all, the screen is much too small and it's hard to zoom in and out. However, what I say is only based on my experience, if you draw best on a phone/small screen, then do what works for you! If you buy a laptop, a deinite must have is a drawing tablet. Different from an iPad or an Android tablet, in that they don't have screens (unless you buy a really upscale, expensive one), and are computer accessories that connect via USB used for drawing (although they can work as a mouse too). I can tell you, using one is easier said than done, and it takes a lot of hand‐eye coordination. I've been using one for 4 years, and maybe after two or three it began to feel natural. Just remember, practice makes perfect! (A note for people who want tablets: a good quality and popular manufacturer is Wacom ( www.wacom.com ). I use a bamboo tablet, which is their cheapest model at 99$. The only problem I have with it is that my cursor becomes slow at random, which can be solved by a reboot).
2. Finding a program There are many different programs out there to choose from. However, these tips may help you pick. Firstly, think about what you have to work with. We discussed hardware in the last step, so if you already have your device(s), great! Now we need to decide what program to use. Not all programs are compatible with all devices which is why the irst step matters before this one. When I drew on my laptop, I got Photoshop. A pretty good program, and if you're in Computer Art, you're probably already familiar with it, which is great! Students get a pretty good deal, as you can get Photoshop for only 20$ a month (which is a huge discount if you look at all the programs’ prices) with the Creative Suite on www.adobe.com , which comes with many other great programs. Although, my subscription to the Suite expired last year, and a lot of people don't have the money for Photoshop. Recently, a friend of mine directed me to a freeware (free software) called Krita. He’d been using it to animate. The great thing about Krita is, it's an animation and drawing program in one, and completely free. I found it to be easy to learn, but this is coming from a person who’d already used Photoshop. For complete beginners, I'd recommend Bamboo Paper (which is preloaded on the School iPads). If you have a Windows computer, Bamboo Paper is free with all the tools unlocked. If you're on mobile, on the App Store, it's still free, but only two tools are unlocked, the rest you have to pay for. Nevertheless, it's still great for beginners. Another two options for mobile artists are ibisPaint x and Sketchbook Pro (which I use)(the lite version is preloaded on school iPads). They come with more tools than bamboo, and while a little more complicated, still easy to use for beginners. Both of these are best on tablets, and both are free, but ibisPaint x is your best choice if you're planning to use a phone. Now we've gotten the boring stuff out of the way, the next article will be on the basics of drawing digitally. See you next time! Written by Suzi
