Back-friendly everyday products are important modules in the prevention as well as in the thera-py of back problems. It would be a good idea for those affected to make their personal environment
more „back-friendly“, from their workplace through their personal living environment to their recreational area.
Even for experts it is not always easy to see whether the design of a product is back-friendly or not. Quite frequently, manufacturers even sell completely unsuitable products as back-friendly, and spread misleading infor-mation.
The AGR seal of approval provides reliable decision making support. It stands for strict test criteria, jointly developed by independent medical/therapeutical ex-perts from various fields of study. The members of this body of experts come from two exceedingly competent professional medical associations, the Federal Associa-
tion of German Back Schools (BdR) e. V. and the Association Forum Healthy Back e. V. – Better Living. Only products that have passed a strict test procedure receive the AGR seal of ap-proval.
The AGR seal of ap-proval has received the accolade „very good“ from ÖKO-
TEST, a German consumer magazine, and has been given the best grade „highly recommendable“ by „La-bel-online“, a portal run by the federal consumer initia-tive association „Die Verbraucher Initiative e. V.“. „La-bel-online“ is being constantly expanded, modified and upgraded with support from the German Federal Minis-try for the Environment, the Federal Environment Agen-cy and currently also from the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). A further proof of the quality of the cachet, with which only proven ergonomic quality is marked!

As early as the 1990s, the respected Hamburg doctor Dr. Günther Neumeyer supported the the-ory that back-friendly products are an important building block for the prevention and treatment
of backache. Today, this theory is undisputed and has been proved in various studies. Thanks to his initiative, the inde-pendent Association Ak tion Gesunder Rücken (AGR) e. V. was founded in 1995. This non-profit organisation co-operates with various medical fields of study and their associations, as well as with many thousand doctors and therapists. Comprehensive findings and information from the medical world are collected and published. The latest findings from the fields of orthopaedics, physiotherapy, industrial medicine, sports science etc. are drawn up by independent experts. This helps many people who are stricken by backache. And that is the majority of us.
The AGR seal of approval offers valuable help, for it iden-tifies products and articles of daily use whose ergonomic qualities were tested in several medical fields of study.
AGR also passes on medical know-how to the employees of the qualified, specialised retail trade in order to im-prove their advisory quality. These training courses have to be refreshed at regular intervals.
However, medical specialists also use this further train-ing by AGR to improve their advisory competence in the field of ergonomic everyday life. These experts qualify as „Consultants for back-friendly situational prevention“.

Compact sweepers and/or multifunctional im-plement carriers are true all-rounders that per-form many different tasks. They are therefore often in constant use − and have to satisfy
special demands in terms of back-friendly design, safety and easy use.
Ergonomically designed all-rounders These all-rounders perform many tasks including sweeping the streets, mowing the grass and clearing the snow as well as gritting and watering and much more besides. Frequently the vehicle has to be adapted to different tasks several times a day. It is therefore im-portant for one person alone to be able to change all implements quickly and easily. None of the work invol-ved should put a burden on the back. Trolleys or other aids for the individual implements help with ergonomic handling. Hydraulic connections make it quick and easy to connect up the implements. Installation is facilitated by size, shape or colouring to rule out operating errors. Moreover, it must be particularly easy to access the sweepings hoppers so that the hopper can be emptied and cleaned simply.
Great focus on safetyIt must be possible to get into the sweeper safely. Door openers or similar safe-state devices prevent the door from closing unintentionally. Handles, profiled entrance edges and a securely fitted floor covering contribute to-wards a non-slip surface and also make it safe when
getting into the vehicle. The safety cabin should ideally offer sufficient headroom. Another important feature is an adequately sized driver‘s seat with lordosis support. These are prerequisites for ergonomic sitting. A stee-ring column with adjustment makes a further contribution to back-friendly working.
The vehicle must be manoeuvrable, directionally stable and equipped with good shock absorbers. This works best with a spring-suspended chassis and a cabin moun-ted on vibration-damping bearings. A spring-loaded dri-ver‘s seat also helps. Additional comfort is provided by a good heating and air-conditioning system, devices to protect from sunlight and a curved windscreen to reduce noise and light reflections.
Safety is very important as these vehicles are constantly manoeuvred back and forth. Together with the statutory lighting, it also helps to have additional working lights fitted to the roof and to the rear of the vehicle for the best-possible field of vision.

Pay attention to the following ergonomic, safety and comfort features when selecting amultifunctional implement carrier:
• It must be safe to get into and out of the driver‘s cabin without putting any undue strain on the driver‘s back. This is e.g. achieved with door openers, handles and non-slip features at the door and on the floor.
• The driver must be protected from avoidable shocks and vibrations. Here attention should be paid to a special chassis suspension system together with vibration damping for the vehicle cabin. Spring loaded driver‘s seats with are also highly recommended.
• A back-friendly, adjustable sitting position is taken for granted, particularly in view of the many hours that the drivers spend in the vehicle. It should therefore be possible to adjust the backrest of the driver‘s seat, which should also have an adjustable lordosis support. Ideal is an additional adjustable arm rest. Make sure there is plenty of headroom.
• In the interests of an ideal sitting position, it is just as important for the steering column to have adjustment as well as a control panel, which enables an easy handling of even complex machine functions.
• As a basic principle, it should be safe and comfortable to operate the vehicle. The driver must have a good view both of the working area and also of all machine and work functions.
• An air-conditioned, soundproofed driver‘s cabin should be standard.
• As the vehicle is driven by only one person, it must also be possible for just one person to operate and change the implements. Changing the implements should be quick and easy and foremost back friendly. Any confusion or malfunctions in connecting up the implements must be ruled out.
• The manufacturer should offer many different implements for a wide range of tasks, also including special solu-tions for specific requirements.
