Consul Introduction
It comes with great pride that we are preparing our final report to become an active chapter of Sigma Chi. I have always heard that whatever is hard to achieve is always worth fighting for, this is most notably true for all of us who have made it this far. Throughout the past years, we have all found ourselves in tough situations, situations that would allow us to prove if we were worthy enough to become a chapter; with great guidance and a solid core group of leaders we showed to overcome the obstacles in our way.
Sometimes the right thing is never easy to do. In our experience as a colony we have gone through trials and tribulations, but have always proven to overcome them. It is not just the experiences that you have gone through that make your character but rather how you dealt with those experiences. I am reminded of Benjamin Piatt Runkle and the courage it must have took for him to throw down his DKE badge and stand up for what was right rather than simply follow the crowd. It is the courage that men like him demonstrate that make the difference in that World and in turn prove to benefit others. When we first came on campus, no one knew what to think of us. We were seen as a strong group of friends you would always see together but we had something no one else did, we were all different. We commonly hear the various stereotypes that each fraternity is known for on campus but for us there is no such thing. We continue to take pride in selecting men that not only meet the Jordan Standard but also contribute to the colony different temperaments, talents, and convictions. I continue to see growth in members of this colony and myself as time continues to go by. It is truly gratifying to see freshmen just entering college go through pledgeship and then see the transformation take place after experiencing the lessons and values Sigma Chi has to offer. It is a great feeling to work with pledges and even members, challenge them and see them grow even though they may not even realize that it is happening. I cannot begin to think about the man I would have been without the incredible experience Sigma Chi has rewarded me. I take the gifts this fraternity has given me and view it as a debt I must repay by spreading that knowledge and experience to others. I look at my job in this colony as an obligation, not as a prestigious title. I have put a lot of work in this colony and its membership but we all still have a lot

more to do. This obligation will be something that will continue to be a debt that I will never be able to repay. As we prepare for our much-awaited installation, I cannot help but acknowledge how we got here. I can still remember trying to tell people about this great idea we had to start a colony at Valdosta and what a great opportunity it was and now I can look back and see just how far we have come. Sigma Chi has truly shown how much it cares by producing such valuable leaders that have helped us along our journey. With the help of our Grand Praetor, Advisor, and many others we were able to reach out to alumni in the surrounding area to form the board we now have the privilege to count on. Without the help from such Sigma Chi’s like the ones that have reached out to us, I know we would have never made it this far.
Sincerely,
Timothy J. Fergus Consul, Sigma Chi Xi Colony Valdosta State University

Finances
We are currently operating in the positive with sufficient funds to operate as well as pay for our installation costs. We have shown our account balances in Appendix 1.2 (page 27) as well as provided them below:
Primary Checking: $6,911.44
Savings: $5,009.75
Total: $11,921.19
Our balance reflects our accounts before collecting dues for this fall semester. We have projected our revenue from dues for the fall in Appendix 1.3 (page 28) as well as prepared a projected budget in Appendix 1.4 (page 29). All outstanding balances as well as comments for each individual from the spring semester can be found in Appendix 1.5 (page 30).
Sigbooks
With the generous assistance of the creator of Sigbooks, Brad Kohl- University of Georgia’s Delta Chapter advisor, we have been about to setup the same online accounting system as their chapter. This program has proven itself by reducing outstanding balances, collecting funds faster as well as informing parents by breaking down the costs and allowing them to make online payments. We look forward to this new accounting system.

Scholarship
Spring 2011 Grades
With our previous spring semester in mind we knew it was vital that we maintained favorable academic results. After completing spring semester our grades were above the all fraternity and all men’s GPA with a semester GPA of a 2.75, see Appendix 1.6 (page 31). The colony’s full grade report can be seen in Appendix 1.7 (page 32).
Fall 2011 Grade Requirements
On August 21, 2011 we passed a vote to raise the minimum GPA requirements to receive a bid and stay socially active in the colony to a 2.4. As part of our three year plan, see Appendix 1.8 (page 35), we plan to gradually raise the standard to excel in academics which will prove to set the bar for other IFC fraternities as well as Greek Life at Valdosta State.
Philanthropy
Relay for Life
In the spring of 2011, the colony members of Sigma Chi at Valdosta State paired up with Chi Omega Sorority and raised $4630.01. We were able to raise this sum by having our members pledge to raise at least $30 a member and we also sold cotton candy at the event. During the week leading up to the event, we hosted pie-Sigma-Chi on campus and the money raised went to Relay for Life as well. Colony member Adam Dryden took on the responsibility as the head of this event this year. His passion for this position arose because of the struggle he was going through with his own mother, Katherine A. Dryden who had been struggling with cancer herself for the past year. Due to her death at this time, Adam was not able to make it to the event but he was still was able to get everything set up and made sure that everything was running smoothly. In memory of his mother, our donations were made on her behalf.

Greek Assembly
The spring Greek Assembly proved to show our colony’s hard work. The awards that were awarded to the colony were Chapter of Merit, and an Excellence Award in Chapter Development and Educational Programming. By achieving a Merit award, this make our colony one of the top three fraternities in IFC. The criteria for a Merit award touches on all aspects of a fraternity’s operations such as academics, community service/philanthropy, educational programming, campus and community involvement and being in compliance with policies and procedures. In addition to our Merit award, we were awarded an Excellence award in Chapter Development and Educational programming. We obtain this award due to the number and quality of our programs that we hosted, such as Mission 365, CHOICES, and various other campus sponsored lectures. With next year in mind, we will be reviewing our weaknesses in order to obtain a Chapter of Excellence award, the highest honor a fraternity can receive. An IFC fraternity has not received an excellence award in over six years at Valdosta State, but with diligence we will prove to set the bar high for Greek Life next year.

Parents Weekend
During the spring semester we hosted our second annual Parents Weekend. We had a total of about 85 people show up and everything went according to plan. A formal dinner was served to all parents, dates and colony brothers. Next, awards were given to colony members that proved themselves throughout the year. The following awards were given:
• Faculty Advisor Award- John Trombetta • Chapter Advisor Award- Douglas Harden • Alumni of the Year Award- Bob Pirkle • Student of Fair Ability Award (Highest GPA)- Cole Roberts • Jordan Standard Award- Chris O’Connor • Order of the Creed Award- Blake Jenkins • Spirit of Sigma Chi Award- Jacob Thrash • Presidents Award (appointed by the Consul to a notable member)- Ray
Brandon • Officer of the Year Award- Tim Fergus • Brother of the Year Award- Tim Fergus
After the awards, Douglas Harden, Liz Pirkle, and David Murphy gave some remarks about the colony and where it has came from and the path left to becoming a chapter to the parents in attendance. We honored the graduating seniors and used the awards to show our appreciation to the exceptional colony members. We concluded the night by serenading Liz Pirkle.

Dear Tim,
The Eta Theta Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity fully endorses the request from Sigma Chi Xi
Colony to gain its charter and be installed. Our chapter has had several constructive interactions
with your colony and our overall outlook is that aside from being initiated you are already our
brothers due to the bonds we have created over the past two years since our first interaction.
Since then your colony has accomplished so much and we commend you for all the hard work
that you have put toward this. I know that you will continue to improve and impress everyone
surrounding you. Our chapter looks forward to your installment and we are excited to call you
our brothers officially.
In Hoc,

Brothers,
It has truly been an honor to serve as the Colony Advisor for the Sigma Chi Xi Colony at Valdosta State University. For
the past year I have been the Colony Advisor as well as Chairman of the Alumni Advisory Board; in this time I have had
the unique opportunity to mentor, assist, and help a group of outstanding young men develop into values – based leaders
and work towards the goal of becoming a Chapter of Sigma Chi. Throughout the past year these young men have faced a
set of broad, challenging issues. With the help of their Alumni and applying the values of Sigma Chi they have worked to
overcome these difficulties and now, at this time, I believe they are ready to be installed as a Chapter of Sigma Chi.
The Colony has grown tremendously in the last year and improved and developed all aspects of Chapter Operations and in
more recent times, learned that to become a Chapter of Sigma Chi and to become a Sigma Chi, one must apply our values
and ideals to their daily lives. This is perhaps the most beneficial aspect of Sigma Chi not only for us but for our
campuses and communities.
I applaud these young men for seeing that the ideal they sought was but imperfectly realized in existing groups on campus
and that in order to perpetuate the Fraternity ideal and to have the values that most closely aligned with theirs – they
wanted to become Sigma Chi’s. A task of this undertaking is daunting at best, but these men should be commended for
the work they have done, the goals they have achieved as well as the one’s they have set for themselves and their Chapter,
and the fact they want something different, something better, something stronger, and we all know if this is what you
want, then You’ll Find It Here!
Their Formal Petition is a culmination of three years of work. I fully support and endorse their Formal Petition and I
recommend that it be accepted and these fine young men be installed at our earliest convenience. If I can provide any
more information about this outstanding group of young men, please do not hesitate to contact me. I know how hard they
have worked and all they have accomplished – I know that they are ready to become Sigma Chi’s!
I look forward to their Installation and I know that the lives of these young men will be enlightened and enriched by the
Ceremonies of Initiation.
I remain,
Very Respectfully Yours,
--//SIGNED//--

Shootin’ With The Sigs Fundraiser
The Shootin! With The Sigs Fundraiser is held every
year. DJ Jones mainly heads the fundraiser. It
consists of a handful of various teams who compete
between each other to hit the most clay pigeons. This
year!s fundraiser was a huge success. Sigma Chi
ended up raising $1,300 total for Huntsman Cancer
Here a group of Sigma Chi Xi Colony members from Valdosta State are
enjoying their time at the Shootin! With The Sigs fundraiser.
Relay For Life
Relay For Life was help in the later part of the Spring
semester. Adam Dryden is the head man in charge of
our participation in Relay For Life. Sigma Chi was
paired with Chi Omega and together raised
$4,630.01 which was later announced to be the most
raised by any Greek organization. The money was
then sent to the American Cancer Society. The
activity that Chi Omega and Sigma Chi constructed
consisted of a piece of plywood with balloons that
people would have to pop in order to win a prize
goldfish. The fundraiser was a great success.
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those
who face cancer will be supported and that one day – cancer will be eliminated.

Luke Donald secured the world No. 1 ranking by winning the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday, beating Lee Westwood in a playoff in what was a duel for top spot between the two Englishmen
It is only the second stroke-play title in
the past five years for Donald, who joins
Westwood and Nick Faldo as the only
Englishmen to hold the top spot since
the rankings were introduced in 1986.
Donald will replace Westwood when the
new rankings are released on Monday.
''Sounds pretty good, doesn't it,'' said
Donald, last year's runner-up. ''It's an
amazing accomplishment. It's
something I will be very proud of when I
look back. I will savor this moment, it's
very special. I think I will stay the same
person, I hope I do. I'm looking forward
to the challenge of staying No. 1. I know
Lee and Martin (Kaymer) will be
chasing me very hard.''
“Luke Donald named #1
golfer in the world after
winning the BMW PGA Tour Championship”.
