AN INTRODUCTION TO CAST NYLONBY RICHARD CHADWICK, ENSINGER
Cast Nylon is used in a multiple of industrial applications. Richard Chadwickwill highlight this material technology and showcase the opportunities forits use from heavy-industrial plant to automotive power steering. Richardwill also present potential uses in 3D printing and green technologies. Comelearn why Cast Nylon is so flexible – you won't believe some of the partsthat can be made, from 1 oz. gears to 1000 lb. stabilizers for ships. Learnabout the machines and materials available to designers and how this tech-nology is fueling growth in the US economy.
BiographyRichard Chadwick currently has responsibility for technical nylon productionat Ensinger, (Grenloch, NJ), which he joined in 2013. Prior to this, Richardled the Technical Divisions of Europe’s leading manufacturer, producing boththe cast nylon material as well as the equipment needed for the manufac-turing of such. Richard’s polymer career kicked off with a management train-ing position at Dunlop UK, following his first degree (BSc in Chemistry,Leeds University- UK). This role covered TPE PU and the ‘Milan’ processfor rubber extrusion. Richard had a few stints aside (notably periods in ed-ucation, consultancy, and ‘peace-corps’ in Africa), and of course his entre-preneurial foray into the Skyrota wind turbine business (in Ireland), whichplayed alongside Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel at the 2009 Glastonburyrock festival! He landed in the USA to ‘build bridges in Pittsburgh’ (literally!).
As well as his BSc, Richard holds an MSc in Material engineering (Lough-borough University, 1995) and an MBA (Warwick University, 2005). You canread more about him on his LinkedIn profile, and he can be contacted [email protected] .

President’s Message
Goodbye to SummerAs we say goodbye to summer, wesay hello to another exciting SPEyear.
Our Section leadership has alreadybegun taking action to make thisyear the most successful year yet,
and we would love your input! The leadership is hereto make sure YOU get the most out of your SPEMembership, so please contribute your ideas andfeedback by emailing me [email protected]
What, after all, is the objective of SPE and what doesthe membership want the Society to be? RussellBroome, former president of SPE, put it this way in hisLeadership Lane message of April 17th: “The objec-tive of SPE is to promote the scientific and engineeringknowledge relating to plastics…” Broome explainedthat success depends on the volunteers who makethings happen. We can all agree with this formulationbut are we making the best use of our efforts? The Palisades-New Jersey Section is financially soundand proud of its accomplishments: b An award winning newsletterb A program of meetings with interesting speakers b Two RETECs that we sponsor and run every
three years – one on PVC (Vinyltec) and one on Foams.
b An active program that supports students: we sponsor student chapters at Rutgers (mostly undergraduates) and at Stevens (mostly graduates) and we award scholarships that are intended to promote the development of the nextgeneration of plastics professionals.
We also provide great opportunities for networkingthrough dinner meetings and our annual golf outing. As we learn from each other, we find that relationshipsare essential to making progress, both individually andfor the industry. SPE provides a marvelous opportunityfor learning and educating the membership. It’s beensuggested to me that we replace our meeting withwebinars, which would undeniably eliminate the issuesof traffic and might be cheaper to run but would elim-inate face-to-face interaction and the unstructured in-teractions that are part of the pleasure and benefit ofmeetings. What would YOU prefer?
As always our goal is to bring the best value possibleto you, our membership, and we are open to trying newideas. We will experiment this coming year with a planttour as an alternative to a conventional meeting with aspeaker. If you see areas for us to improve or have newideas for meetings, let us know! Our objective is to ben-efit the membership by increasing individual knowledgein the plastics area while building solid relationships withplastics professionals in this community and in thegreater industry. And, of course, we also want to havea good time! There’s no substitute for the fellowship of colleagues in-volved in the plastics industry, so we look forward toseeing you at the next meeting, September 17th at theOlde Mill Inn in Basking Ridge. We can all grow togetherand have fun as we meet the needs of current plasticsprofessionals and those in the years to come.

Dave also called me a decade ago and cajoled me to getactive in the then Palisades Section and run for the BOD.

Tribute to Dr. David W. Riley (May 7, 1921-July 9, 2015)
A plastics pioneer and an Emeritus Director of our Section, Dave Riley, passed away at the age of 94. “David re-ceived his BS in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineeringfrom Ohio State University. … Mr. Riley is best remembered for his positive attitude, warm smile, brilliant mind, and his love of science. He loved tennis, golf, and of course, Chemical Engineering.” (Click here to view more)Dave worked for Goodyear Research in 1943, served in the Navy 1944-1946, and worked for DuPont, UnionCarbide, Western Electric, and Tenneco throughout his career.
Members of our Section remember him respectfully:
Having known Elliot Weinberg, Alva Whitney, and Dave formany years I feel very sad we have lost all three of thesefine gentlemen and mentors to us all. A great void has beendealt our Section and one that will be hard to fill going for-ward.
Keep the fond memories of all three of our founding fathersin your hearts for as long as we all shall live. It was ourhonor to have known and worked with such fine indi-viduals. That's what SPE is all about.
Rich Bradley
I would, however, like to add Jack Ryan to your list offounding fathers, fine gentlemen and mentors to usall. Dave will be missed and I specifically will always re-member my 6+ hour round of golf with him at PicatinnyArsenal! He can now join the board meeting with Elliot,Jack, Alva and Andrew.
Tom Martin
I am so sorry to hear of David's passing. He wasalways a strong proponent of the plastics industryand plastics professionals. Dave brought me ontothe board of Palisades Chapter and I feel privi-leged to have known him as my mentor and myfriend.
Lenny Davis
Dave was also the reason I stepped up to volun-teered with the Palisades NJ Section. That wasalmost twenty years ago. Al, Elliott, and Davewere the Palisades founding fathers and cheer-leaders. They will be missed.
