The Society’s SiteAnnouncements of the Individual European
National Rheological Societies
Time period September 2006 to February 2007
The international bimonthly journal Applied Rheology offers all European rheological societies anextended platform for communication with their members and other rheologists.
Two special issues of Applied Rheology each year provide a number of pages dedicated toannouncements from rheological societies. These may be a meeting announcement for the mem-bers of your society, an activity supported by your society, address changes, etc. In addition therewill be also some space reserved for individual announcements. The motivation behind this offer isto collect the announcements that are usually transmitted to us by individual members of thenational societies or conference organizers and then printed throughout the year in Applied Rhe-ology.
Strict deadlines for providing information to be printed in these special issues are February 1stand August 1st, respectively. We are able to offer sending these special issues – which as usual con-tain scientific contributions, patents, conference calendar and conference reports, buyers guide, news – to all members of your community at a very reduced rate, or even without extra charge, depending on the current agreement between your society and Applied Rheology.

Workshop “Microrheology and Rheological Phenomena in Microfluidics”4th – 5th of October 2006, Karlsruhe
Microrheology has developed as a new prosperous field of activity for rheologists. Strongly driven byfundamental biotechnology research at the beginning, microrheological techniques now becomemore and more important for industrial and applied research also in other areas like nanomaterialscience, chemical process engineering or food technology. Microrheological techniques require onlyvery small sample volumes, some of them are non-invasive, others offer insight into rheological prop-erties of inhomogeneous materials with a spatial resolution on the micron scale or even below.Microfluidics concerns the handling of sample volumes of microliters or less, it includes well-estab-lished inkjet printing devices but also emerging lab-on-a-chip and micro process engineering tech-nologies. Due to the high surface to volume ratio in microfluidic devices rheological phenomena dueto interactions between device boundaries and fluid constituents can become much more importantthan for conventional processing techniques. Moreover, microfluidic devices are attractive to rheol-ogists since they allow experiments at elasticity numbers not accessible with conventional set-ups.Keynote lectures by internationally renowned speakers will summarize the state of the art inmicrorheology and rheological aspects of microfluidics. Current activities and future challenges inthese quickly emerging research areas will be presented. The Workshop will be chaired by Prof. Dr.N. Willenbacher, Vice President of Deutsche Rheologische Gesellschaft.

Deadline for application for the “Young Rheologists Award 2007” of the German Societyof Rheology
In order to encourage junior scientists working in the field of rheology in Germany, in 1998 the Ger-man Society of Rheology (DRG) established a biannual award, the Young Rheologists Award (Rhe-ologie-Preis der DRG). For the period 2005/2006 the award was announced last year by the commit-tee of the DRG. The time for applications ends December 31, 2006. Prof. Philippe Cassagnau, from Université Claude Bernard in Lyon organized the 6th young rheolo-gists meeting, in “Couvent de la Tourette” close to Lyon on March 6 – 8, 2006. 29 Ph.D. students andpost-doctoral fellows attended this meeting, covering various scientific skills, from granular materi-als, polymer nanocomposites, food science, etc. The presentations raised interesting and deep sci-entific discussions between the young participants. Prof. Jacques Guillet (University Jean Monnet –Saint Etienne) gave an invited lecture on polymer flow simulation. The participants has also the oppor-tunity to visit the Research and development center of the Society COATEX, and were thus involvedin applications of rheology in the formulation of thermoplastics and paintings.

ICR Midterm Meeting, Hersonisos, Crete, April 27, 2006
On the initiative of ICR President Jae Chun Hyun, a midterm meeting of the International Commit-
tee on Rheology (ICR) took place on April 27, 2006, at Hersonisos, Crete, in conjunction with AERC2006. The International Committee on Rheology is the organization of world rheology that sponsorsthe International Congress on Rheology, which takes place every four years. The next ICR will be3 – 8 August 2008 in Monterey, California, USA.
ICR Delegates of 19 Rheology Groups (including delegates from Europe, Canada, China, Japan,Korea, and the US) were present when ICR President Jae Hyun opened the meeting and welcomeddelegates to this historic “first ever” midterm ICR meeting. So far, the ICR has only met on the occa-sions of the International Conference on Rheology, but it was felt that if we want to bring rheologyto the world-wide agenda, a closer cooperation of and more frequent exchanges between ICR dele-gates may be necessary.
Key strategies in pursuit of this ambitious aim are the creation of an ICR website and an ICR logo.Following the successful ICR2004 held in Seoul, South Korea, the Korean Society of Rheology donat-ed $10,000 USD to the International Committee on Rheology to set up and to cover operational costsof an ICR web site, now up and running at www.icr.tu-berlin.de. The ICR intends to operate its web-site as an umbrella of the National Society sites. The ICR site will not duplicate information that isavailable at the national level but rather will provide a platform for fast interlinking of rheologicalactivities worldwide. Suggestions and comments on the new website are welcome and may be for-warded to the ICR Secretary at [email protected].
So far, the ICR had no logo and local organizers of International Conferences on Rheology arefree to create their own logo. ICR delegates supported unanimously the proposal to accept a modi-fied version of the 2004 Conference as ICR logo until further decisions will be taken.
ICR delegates also welcomed the initiative of Prof. Paul Slatter to form a Southern African Soci-ety of Rheology (SASOR, see http://www.sasor.co.za/). SASOR will organize the 1st Southern AfricanConference on Rheology at Cape Town, South Africa, 24 – 27 September 2006.
According to the rules of the ICR, ICR2012 will be held in Europe, and the European Society of Rhe-ology has already started preparations of the site selection, which will be formalized at ICR2008.
