Message from the Pastor

The Way Forward

For several decades, the UMC has been at an impasse when it comes to the issue of full inclusion of LGBTQ persons in the life of our church. Though we are of one body, the Body of Christ, we are clearly not of one voice on this subject. Conservative, progressive, and moderate voices all find a home within our denomination partly because we do share so much in common. On the issues of same-sex unions and the ordination of LGBTQ persons, we find it harder and harder to find common ground.

At the 2016 General Conference, the Commission on a Way Forward was created to help the Council of Bishops develop a path that would help us move forward on these issues, all while holding fast to our greater mission to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world (the mission statement of the UMC). The Commission on a Way Forward developed three models for the future of the UMC:

• The “Traditional” model• The “Connectional Conference” model• The “One Church” model

The Council of Bishops has overwhelmingly endorsed the “One Church” model and will be recommending that model for the special 2019 General Conference to be held next February. The General Conference is the highest legislative body of the UMC. It’s the only body that speaks for our denomination.

During the month of July, we’ll be sharing some resources on our webpage to help keep you informed. In addition to this, we welcome one-on-one conversations with you. Also, on Tuesday July 17th, at 7:00 pm, I’ve invited my father, Rev. Byron P. Brought, a now retired UM pastor of over 40 years, to lead us in an informational session to better understand how the UMC makes decisions, what the three models are, and what’s at stake in the next General Conference. You’re invited to come. You’re invited to stay informed, and you’re invited to hold one another in prayer.

In the meantime, I’d like for you to consider watching two videos, from the Rev. Tom Berlin, which I find to be extremely helpful resources to help frame the discussion. The first video is approximately 20 minutes long; the second, from this year’s Annual Conference, is approximately an hour.

CHILDREN AND FAMILY MINISTRIES JULY / AUGUST 2018

Summer Family WorshipDue to summer schedules and vacations, we just can’t make it to church on Sundays. We would like to offer a summer alternative for our church family here at BAUMC -- A midweek, intergenerational worship service. We would like to start with dinner. We will provide a dinner at 6:30pm, so you won’t have to worry about fitting that in before you come. Sing, pray, encouragement, message and an interactive time for ALL AGES in an hour. These services will go every other week. We want to stay connected. Therefore we will “stir” on another to love & good works.

“Stir” Hebrews 10:24-25

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

Lindsay Dodge recently had a birthday!

And she wanted what any 11-year-old would want for her birthday…A BIRTHDAY PARTY! HOORAY! Only this party was different because instead of asking for birthday presents, Lindsay asked her friends to bring non-perishable food items so that she could make a food donation to her church that we might be able to help those in need. So that’s what Lindsay and her friends did; they collected 40 lbs of food for our Food Ministry. What a thoughtful, self-less and caring gift of love! Thank you, Lindsay, for your thoughtfulness; thank you for “Loving as Jesus Loves!”

Our Food Ministry at BAUMC consists of four components: • Manna House – Every Wednesday• Family Food Distribution – Monthly• Senior Food Distribution – Monthly• Emergency Food Distribution – Need Based• Our Food Ministry involves lots of hard work, lots of team work, and lots of sacrifice from many good people doing many wonderful things. Thank you all for “Loving as Jesus Loves!”

NEW MEMBERS JULY / AUGUST 2018

Frank and Doris Tillman

John Patti

Wayne & Hilda Scarborough

My parents raised my 2 sisters and I in Morristown, NJ. After getting married, I lived in Brick, NJ before moving to Bel Air in 2009. My husband, Tim, works at APG. I have 5 sons and 2 daughters-in-law and my first grandson is expected on Thanksgiving day of this year. I am working as a Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and I specialize in treating patients 25 years old and under. I work in White Marsh in an outpatient practice with several other providers and therapists. While living in NJ, I attended the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church, but after transferring to Bel Air, I visited numerous churches in the area and found BAUMC to be a good fit for our family. I currently serve on the Finance Committee. In my spare time, I enjoy kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, interior decorating and playing with my 2 miniature poodles. Karen Green

John married Janet Fields on May 12, 2018. Congratulations!!John is a System Software Administrator at Leidos Innovations Corp. He is also a board certified high school basketball official.

We were born, raised, educated and married in North Carolina. After Graduate School, we moved to New Jersey where we worked in telecommunications and then retired to Williamsburg, Virginia. Last year, we moved to Bel Air to be closer to our Son, Benjamin; Daughter-in-Law, Allison; and Granddaughters Cora and Lily, who are members of Bel Air United Methodist Church.

Wayne and Hilda transfered from Perry Hall United Methodist Church.

They absolutely LOVE Bel Air United Methodist Church.

On behalf of the Flower Mart Small Group, we would like to thank all those members of the church that came out to support our flower sale this year by purchasing plants. We enjoyed a beautiful day and a successful sale that will continue to help with our mission in Chabadza. Thank you!

************************************************************************************I just want to thank you for the plant sale you had about a month ago. Every day, I look out on my patio and admire my pots. Your selection was different from the usual “stuff” offered by the Big Box Stores. And the purpose is far more worthwhile. I’ll be sure to patronize you again next year.

Thanks again,Karlen Murray

The Way Forward – Informational Meeting Tuesday, July 17th, 7:00 pm

This is an informational meeting only to learn more about how our denomination, The United Methodist Church, makes decisions in general, but also, and even more specifically, the process for how we will or will not include LGBTQ persons in our churches. The meeting will be led by Pastor Byron’s father, retired pastor, Rev. Byron P. Brought.

Youth Mental Health First Aid course offered! Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

On June 6th, we had a group of 35 - 40 marchers on their way from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. They’re called the Poor People’s Campaign, and they’re an advocacy group for the poor and the homeless, who find their origin and their inspiration in the vision of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Many of the marchers are homeless; some of them are not. But they are bound by a common passion for spreading awareness for homelessness and advocating for help on Capitol Hill.

We were able to open up our doors to them to provide dinner, shelter for the night, and breakfast before sending them on their way. They were deeply touched by all of our generosity, and by our willingness to share our resources.

Bel Air UMC will again open their doors to a group of 15 - 20 cyclists from VENTURE. They should be arriving after 4pm on Monday, August 20th.

Venture is a non-profit organization based in Minnesota. They spend their greatest energy on the world’s greatest needs as an active response to the Gospel. They organize cycling tours in order to raise money to further their mission. Venture reached the least reached and least resourced people. Least reached meaning the countries that are less than 2% christian that need to be reached with the Gospel. Least Resourced meaning trafficked people, slaves, impoverished people, the poor, and refugees. We go to the areas that need us the most. These least reached and least resourced areas we are working in are Nepal, Burma, and Thailand.

The tour we are supporting is their Women’s Tour! It’s a tour that is 300 miles long from Washington D.C. to New York City. They rely on churches like us to host them for a night.

A Call to Action on Racial Justice

Are we willing to have a bold conversation? Are we willing to do more to fight discrimination, confront racism, and to affirm that all lives matter in God's eyes?

The United Methodist Church, at all levels of leadership, is challenging us to a Call to Action on Racial Justice. What might that look like? Well, it will mean different things to different people, and different churches, but at the very least it might mean that we begin to think about how we respond to people of different races, backgrounds and ethnicities, and check that against our Christian faith, and our vision to “Love As Jesus Loves.” Later this summer, and into the fall, look for ways that we can be more intentional about reducing racism in our communities, in our culture, and in our world.
